Tomorrow I'll get my xmg p304. 2560x1440 screen (non-glare) and i7-4712 which is 37W. Will run some tests and check temperatures first. If it runs too hot then some re-pasteing with mx-4.

    Just an update after tweaking.

I've dialed back my UV to -80mv for added stability (oddly, I only had reboots while the machine was idle, not during the 1 hour stress test). I've also reduced multipliers to 33/32//31/30 which caps it at 2.99ghz on 4 cores. Since the CPU/GPU share a heatpipe, reducing CPU temp (which far exceeds the GPU) seems beneficial. I don't do much CPU-heavy gaming so GPU performance is more useful to me. Might see if I can get some OC on the GPU as well.
I've also got -25mv UV on the GPU via NV inspector.

    Here's my 3DMark Results:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4712MQ,Notebook W230SS

Temps I pulled out of HWInfo during the 3DMark Run:
CPU Min: 50, CPU Max: 78, CPU AVG: 60
GPU Min: 40, GPU Max: 63, GPU AVG: 52

I've also got an inline power-meter coming in the next week, so I'll also be looking at how much power the system draws.

Idle has lower voltages, you were likely going through the voltage flaw that the chip can operate at.

Thank you for the replies. In the four or so days since I've gotten my laptop, I've already flashed the BIOS to Prema's modded one. It's really extensive, the level of customisation possible. It's just that there are some options that I don't know what for they are.

As for XTU, it's also very complicated, as I've never had a computer of my own, let alone overclocking it. So I'll need to read up, watch vids and stuff.

And to update everyone else: I've now installed OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 NATIVELY onto my second SSD, using tonymacx86's tools (Google the name, it's got to be all of the first several tens of hits). I'm configuring it right now, as there seem to be some graphics artifacts, and I can't set it up fully just yet. I'll start a new thread real soon (hopefully within a week), once I get it as stable as possible, including sleep/wake, power management, Intel SpeedStep, audio, LAN and full graphics acceleration.

Note that the discrete Nvidia GPU WON'T work on OS X, which doesn't support Optimus, never has and never will. If you want good graphics, I suggest you stick with Windows. I'll be using OS X mainly for iOS development, which is not resource-intensive, so the HD 4600 will do.

Meanwhile, is there anyone here who has experience with ACPI and system table editing? I need help with DSDT patching.

Does anyone get an "low memory" warning from Win 8 when gaming via HDMI?

I have my NP7338 connected to a TV via HDMI with the display set to only the TV. While gaming, at random times, the screen blanks out, then reappears with the game in "windowed" mode. A Windows warning pops up complaining about low memory. I was only using about 2.9GB of 8GB RAM.

I was playing Tomb Raider with graphics at Nvidia GeForce Experience Optimal setting. IIRC, it happened with BF3 as well. I was also using a PS3 DS3 controller connected to an Asus BT-400 bluetooth dongle using the Scarlet.Crush driver.

Is the warning referring to low VRAM? Adding more RAM probably won't help.

Low mem warning is almost always due to page-file being the wrong size. Go to Control Panel->System->Advanced System Settings->Performance/Settings->Advanced->Virtual Memory/Change.

I've set mine to Custom, 4096/4096. I've found the auto settings tries to start with a small page file and grow it when needed. Except Windows completely fails at expanding the file quick enough to compensate, giving you the low memory warnings.

Generally how are you all finding the build quality on this?

I was deciding between this and the Y50- but this wins for it's lighter & has a better battery.

Also- I'm looking at the QHD (glossy my only option). I want to use it out doors- would a matte filter ruin the experience of QHD?

Build quality is fine. I haven't found any build issues. If I had to be super anal, there's slightly more black edge on the right of the screen than the left (like 0.5mm).

I suspect the matte filter would completely undermine the extra resolution with graininess. On the flipside, the gloss screen is practically useless outdoors (in which case I'd suggest just getting the matte 1080p option).

Also, my new 3DMark results with a very slight OC on the GPU and UV. (-25mv Voltage Offset, +40Mhz Base Clock, +130Mhz Memory Clock). CPU UV/UC settings are in my previous post 1 page back.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4712MQ,Notebook W230SS
CPU temp hits 79 degrees and GPU max at 70 degrees.

Firestrike which is the heavy GPU test comes in dead even with the Schenker P304 review unit on notebookcheck (quoted as 3940 on the review). Given that the Schenker has the higher level 4810MQ CPU I'd call that a win. Notebookcheck have their max temps of 100 degrees on the CPU and 88 degrees on the GPU respectively as well.

Oh no. I was hoping not to hear that. I'm only willing to jump down to a 13.3" @ QHD (need as much screen as possible- lots of excel/wordpress). Is there no option of a QHD matte display?

I think some places have the 2560x1440p screen in matte, you may have to check with others.

But as far as the 3200x1800, if you wanted matte you'd have to buy a glare-reducing screen protector which usually introduce some grain to the screen. At 13" though, you literally need a magnifying glass to discern individual pixels so it likely won't make much difference.

    Hi guys!
I ordered my sager np7338 4 days ago. just done reading through all the posts in this thread and I thank you guys for sharing a lot of helpful info. My upgrades:
    i7-4810mq
    IC Diamond thermal compound
    Samsung 250 ssd 840 evo

After reading some of the posts here made me a bit worried that my order might come with defects especially that my laptop will be shipped here in the Philippines. *fingers crossed*

But coming from a year of using MSI GE60-0nc for work and gaming, I really do consider this as a huge upgrade for me. Really excited! Will post impressions (after about 1-2 more weeks)

Thanks for this. Looks like the default is automatic allocation like you said. I'll definitely give this manual allocation a shot tonight.

I did some research further research on this. It seems to be a memory leak type of bug specifically in Windows 8.1. Many people with capable systems started experiencing this after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 .

There is an Intel thread (5 pgs, pointed finger at Microsoft) and a Microsoft thread (25+ pages) about it that are a few months old. A proper patch hasn't been released to fix the issue. Some people are getting 30+GB page sizes!

The 2560x1440 version is available in matte only, it's the LQ133T1JW02 in this list (Antiglare Haze 42%).
    The WQHD is, I think, preferable to the QHD anyway. At least, when sailing on these benchmarks;

    QHD (3200x1800)
    • Average: 338.9 cd/m²
    • Brightness Distribution: 87 %
    • Black: 0.54 cd/m²
    • Contrast: 685:1
    WQHD (2560x1440)
    • Average: 298.3 cd/m²
    • Brightness Distribution: 76 %
    • Black: 0.19 cd/m²
    • Contrast: 1663:1
The latter values are rather impressive, and the Acer even has a touchscreen over the LCD (otherwise no "Ultrabook" sticker from Intel  ... ), so the values on the W230SS might even surpass these. For outdoor use especially it's an easy choice. Like Stooj said, the 1800 vs 1440p pixels on 13.3" won't make much of a noticeable difference. Furthermore, there's the nitty-gritty with 1800's PenTile RGBW technology ...

By the by, the Zenbook Infinity's glossy version of the WQHD :) :
    WQHD (2560x1440)
    • Average: 358.3 cd/m²
    • Brightness Distribution: 71 %
    • Black: 0.196 cd/m²
    • Contrast: 2138:1
Am still hoping there's someone willing to take a look at the LCD connectors (FHD<->QHD<->WQHD?).
If two (or all three) are interchangeable then there is no reason for me to splash out an extra $150 for an LCD I'll replace the minute it arrives. And it results in a vastly larger selection of resellers.

Has anyone used aglare-reducing screen protector on the qhd screen? I use it a lot out doors but don't want to ruin the screen.

Also, can I get an accurate idea of real-life battery use? Thanks

This is because Windows is running at a scaled resolution, and such apps aren't built properly to handle such behavior. To fix this, go to the executable file, right-click, go to the Compatibility tab and select 'Disable scaling for high-DPI displays' or something like that. Click Apply, close the window and start the application. Should be better.

Choose font scaling to 100%. Windows 8 sets it default to 125% and can cause some fonts to be blurry.

Right click desktop, personalize, display in lower left, click "let me choose one scaling level for all my displays" and choose "smaller - 100%". You will have to logoff and back on, but it should fix the concern.

    Hi,
Please give me some advice regarding battery life.

The review says you can get between "six to seven hours of battery life while just surfing the Internet"

Is this true- is anyone getting that much battery?

I noticed you're having a hard time getting replies about your battery life questions. Most people use this laptop not just for surfing the Internet so it's hard to get an accurate battery life measurement. I come from MacBooks with really good battery life. I bought this laptop primarily for all the other features and not the battery.

With that said, if you were to get the best measurement from a review, it would HTWingNut's: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...ger-np7338-clevo-w230ss-review-htwingnut.html

I would go by that review and decide from there.

Thank you for that- HTWingNut's article helped a lot. I should expect around 5 hours browsing.

My last question is about a screen filter- I use my laptop outdoors a lot. Would an anti-glare filter ruin the QHD experience?

Fortunately, I have the 1080p matte so I don't have to worry about that. But I think that has been addressed before. IIRC, the filter made the display a bit grainy. Hopefully someone will confirm.

I've been getting this low memory warning which has been crashing the new Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare both when hooked via HDMI and playing on laptop only. I have 16gb of memory installed and when I look in the task manager it shows I am only using 3.5 to 4.5gb used while playing even when the error occurs.

I applied the settings the Stooj recommended...the custom 4096/4096 but I still get this error. I have never had it running any other program/game that I recall. I am running Windows 8.1.

If anyone else has any advise it would be appreciated.

Although I disagree, this made me chuckle... Thanks.

Another hackintosh update: OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks is installed, well and stable on my system. I highly recommend tonymac's tools, but if you have some qualms against him (many people do), you can do it the slower, more manual way (take a look at the InsanelyMac forums). It's exactly like the difference between driving an automatic and a manual car (although I don't drive, not yet, at least).

I've still got some things left to configure and set up, such as patching the DSDT tables. Once that's done, I'll get a guide going... And anyone can contribute.

I don't believe XTU requires restarting. I've set it, rebooted and the new clock settings were even visible in the BIOS. I've set it to autostart anyway since I'm constantly tweaking.

As far as clock jumping, I've found mine does this as well. This is typically an OS/Kernel governor issue. Win8.1 seems VERY eager to jump to higher clockspeeds and practically never hangs onto the minimum clock. I'm not even sure if this behaviour can be fixed in Windows though.
Underclocking and Undervolting basically side-steps the issue by cooling the system down and so you don't hit thermal trigger for the fans as often. I've found my current setup even allows me to play some "light" games with the fan either off or on minimal setting if I use the frame-capper at 60fps.

Thanks for the tips, but I don't want to replace my WiFi card - I've got an ASUS USB dongle. As for my boot loader, I prefer Chimera - it is much less complicated. And Clover is only really useful if you want to keep your Extensions folder clean - but I'd rather use kexts than rely on on-the-fly patching, which I don't really trust. And yes, I know about needing to patch AppleHDA. But thanks much, and I'll keep you updated.

You'll probably have to use ThrottleStop to do that instead (it has 4 profiles).

As far as Youtube stutter, make sure Hardware Acceleration is enabled. You may also have to swap between the html5 player and flash player as often one performs better than the other. You can do this by going to YouTube.

I've also attached a pic of my LCD connector (3200x1800) requested earlier in the thread which shows no J_LED1 connector as well. However there does appear to be an extra power connector above the main LVDS connector.

I've also discovered the Transcend RAM is marked as DDR3L but looking up the serial # on the Samsung chips returns that it's 512MBx8 layout at 1.5V.

On the topic of Watts, I've managed to get my Idle usage to 19W (I can hit 17W by seriously underclocking, removing all external devices etc). I've also tested max usage scenarios and it averages around 75-80W (with undervolting, slight underclock) so I may be able to get away with a light-weight 90W power adapter.

Out of curiousity, why would you go the hackintosh route instead of Linux? Every distro I've tried works perfectly out of the 'box', why go though all the trouble for Mac OS?

iOS development, and for the heck of it. I really like OS X. I've got nothing against Linux, though, and if I've got the time, I will get some flavour installed, once I've decided which.

Can this run 2560x1440 over the HDMI cable? I'm purchasing a Achieva Shimain (Korean) monitor that only has a Dual-DVI port. I have a DVI-D adapter.

Can I run the W230SS via HDMI into the DVI-D adapter to the monitor @ 2560x1440? Think it's 67Hz max (OC'd).

Looking forward to seeing this. I've been trying the tonymac method but something isn't quitre right. I think it would be useful to get a really solid guide for the W230SS and I'll be happy to help.

Haven't seen that error before. Have you tried different versions of 3DMark to see if they all do that? You can also double check to see that its set to run of the Nvidia GPU in the Nvidia control manager.

Glad to hear you figured it out. Do you have a 32bit OS installed?

So, Schenker finally sent me my computer back with a good looking screen!

I figured I'd run some benchmarks, it turns out I only get around 3750 points in Fire Strike. Is there anything that might be holding my GPU back?

My Sager was supposed to arrive today, but I looked at the UPS tracking number, and it showed that it had been delivered to the XoticPC headquarters in Nebraska. I called them up and they can't figure out why it was delivered to them, but the sales guy set me up straight and told me it would be sent out for delivery to me immediately. happens and at least it wasn't sent to somebody else's house.
