Hey guys! I have Windows 7 and 8.1 from Dreamspark. Which operating system should I install on the system? I will have to dual boot with Ubuntu for course work. I am not a fan of virtualization.

You should install Windows 8(.1) since it supports DirectX 11.1 (which isn't fully supported on Windows 7 AFAIK) as well as being somewhat faster among other things.
If you want a startmenu and run metro-apps in a window there are options ;)
Windows 8.2 should bring back the startmenu and might also bring about running metro-apps in windowed mode.

This comes from a person who has hated the "Metro"-UI and Windows 8.

Dude I got to ask, why all the empty lines after all your posts?

    Edit:
You also have another startmenu alternative from the same company as "ModernMix" (running Metro-apps in a window).
Here is another startmenu alternative, haha there seem to be quite many.

I opted for the W230SS for now until I find a 17" that suits me. Hopefully can make some money back on the W230ST to make up some of the difference. But the performance and battery life are enough to substantiate the cost. :)

I don't have this laptop but judging from the specs, installing any Linux OS would be a breeze. Not sure about the wifi card though, you might need to use the non free firmware package depending on your wifi card.

I'm triple booting Win 8.1, 7 and Linux without any problems. Not using UEFI though, and again not on this laptop but it should be the same. You just have to enable legacy support and turn off Secure Boot if you intend to use anything else alongside Win 8.

Got my NP7338 yesterday and here is a basic overview of Linux using Ubuntu/Debian.

    1. It's stable.
    2. Battery life seems to be more or less identical to using Windows 8.
    3. Stock wifi card is not supported (Broadcom).
    4. With 331.67 drivers, the performance in furmark is identical to Windows.
    5. All hotkeys aside from airplane mode and scroll lock work. All ports work.
    6. Idles around 50*c after a repaste with Arctic MX4, no propping up, light work with lots of browser tabs.
    7. Bumbleebee stable works conjunction with nvidia-331 package from xorg-edgers. Check the muktware.com guide.
    8. 4810mq operates fine.

I'm very lazy when it comes to Linux reviews. Also, GPU temperatures running furmark's stress test begin to climb into the 80's after several minutes, but will in my case, drop and then stay at around 75 when I prop up the back.

How's gaming on this size of a laptop? Starting to get interested in buying this laptop but I'm a big guy. Just wanting to know if it feels cramped when gaming or if it feel like you have to strain to look at the screen. Portability and power are my biggest concerns, and for the price it just looks almost to good.

I bought it through a reseller. They had a couple of rebates which pushed the system price under USD 1000 for the 4810 incl windows 8. Good price. I just hope I can get their logo off the back with a spudger and some alcohol or wd40.

Dont worry too much about something that hasnt happened yet. You may be able to still purchase it as well. You'll just be out of the computer while its sent back to get a new one.

I'm amazed dead pixels are still a thing in this day and age, I've not had one for some time on anything I've purchased for a while.

"Dead pixel guarantees" worry me though because any screen with one would then be put aside for someone that doesn't purchase said "guarantee" (because I highly doubt companies offering this service bin the bad screens).

It's unlikely but could still happen. Worse case is return the laptop for a refund using their 30 day return guarantee and order a new one.

I'd imagine it may be used for service, but can't be used in new machines. Used/sold components can't be used as new. I always buy the dead pixel guarantee though, it's fairly cheap ($25) considering the alternative.

Very true. I have seen others laptops developed a stuck pixel down the road.
I have been mostly lucky with LCD screens. I haven't had one yet that developed a stuck pixel later on, but have had some with it from the start. The $25 price tag was low enough for me to justify it.

    Hi guys,
I ve just received my w230ss with i7 4810MQ, 860M , 8GB DDR3 and Intel 7260AC. Overall i am satisfied but there are few Issues I need help with :
Most Important: Low Download Speed via WiFi. I have TPLINK 1043 B/G/N Router, Installed newest drivers for 7260AC but Max Dl speed is very low - it is only 16 Mbit on my 32 Mbit Internet Connection. When I plug My USB Wifi Card DL Speed is fine it reaches 31,6Mbit.
Signal Strength on both cards is perfect.
2nd Important: IS there any tweak for the CPU to reach high frequencies? Cause In BF4 CPU runs at 3100 Mhz and I think its way too low... It should be about 3400- if 3800 is for 1 core then 3600 is for 2 cores and 3400 for 4 cores...
    Thanks for help :)

Not sure what to do about WIFI, but with the processor you could check temps to see how hot it is. It could also be hitting its max TDP. I would run monitoring software like hwmonitor to see what is up.

In both cases undervolting would probably help. What have you tried so far?

    Yup, i downloaded latest drivers v 1.7.0.sth .

About i7- According to the notebookcheck review of w230ss the turbo boost issue is a "normal" feature- I hoped that someone found out how to solve this problem or at least discovered why does it happen... The CPU definietely should reach 3.6 ghz with 4 cores under load [ according to Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and Intel ARK]- Explain to me how could it exceed its TDP on stock settings... its impossible. It just locks at 3.1 ghz with idle gpu so it cant be a problem with Power Supply either. I dont think Temperature is an Issue too- I am benchmarking it right now in Intel Extreme TU and the max temperature is 85 C so there is still plenty of space to reach 100 C.

You can try throttlestop to lock the multipliers at 36x and see if it holds under load.

I don't have my W230SS yet so i cant say if it will work or not.

I thought I remember reading Htwingnut using it on his W230ST but I'm not 100% on that.

A lot of new computers are designed that once both components are under load then the CPU throttles it self regardless of temps etc.

The Cpu throttles itself to 3.1 ghz with gpu under load and without.. as I said temps are fine- 85C. Anyway For now 4810mq performs worse then 4700 its still way better then my previous dual core processor but still 500 Mhz makes a difference.

Did you read the part where i said to try Throttlestop so it does not let the machine throttle to 3.1ghz and locks the multiplier to 36x 3.6ghz or did you just ignore that part ?
