Can u make a voltage bios mod for the soldered 650M GT like the one for Acer 5830TG for those who'd like to undervolt their gpu ? It was allowing to select gpu@0,8V, gpu@0,85V...directly in the bios.
It could allow to game at lower temps and noise for those who don't need to overclock. -
We are working on the GT650M. The new cards are working a bit different...

What's ur concern about the fan ?
-
Kallogan, I do not know whether there is on other notebooks platform W170ER, but modifications to the core i3 2350m, like me, there is a glitch that when the load (for example, in GTA 4) when the processor and graphics card fan is turned off warm up, then after a while activated for 3 seconds and then turns off again, so on and so works in spurts, which is why things can overheat
-
I guess it's up to Clevo to fix EC related issues.
EDIT:
Prema Mod v1.1 is now released for everyone on the Blog. Follow the guides and have fun.
It is an identical port of the W110ER Mod:

Has any w170er user tried the bios recovery thingy? You can check the guide made by Prema here: BIOS RECOVERY « Prema Mod
So far it seems to be working on clevo w110er, however I can't make it work on my w150er. Since w170er is pretty much the same thing W150er maybe some user can test it.
This would be a great feature since it can recover bricked laptops -

Hi everyone, first time posting here.
I'm considering buying the Clevo W170ER, but the noise/temperature problems make me unsure about this model.
So, I was considering configuring my Clevo with an i5 ivy bridge cpu instead of the usual i7 cpu. Has anyone done this? Should I expect significant improvements in temperatures by doing this or is it going to be only marginally better?
Thanks in advance. -
Using an Intel i5-3520 processor will decrease your temperatures slightly as it's a 35W chip and the i7-3610 is a 45W chip.
Frankly though, the majority of the heat generated in your laptop is from your video card. Your CPU should average 35C whereas your GPU will average 75C.
If you're concerned about noise, consider a laptop cooler with variable fan speed. -
Prema Mod for this model updated to v1.3!

Thank you for your reply sha7bot.
I've contacted the retailer I'll be buying from, and there's a 65 difference. It's not a big difference so performance wise I would get the i7 right away. But I've been fairly lucky in my last laptop purchases, only bought models with good cooling/temperatures, and everyday a colleague or a friend showed up with an overheating or very noisy laptop I thanked the Lord for my choice. lol
Regarding my indecision, I've been reading some more and there seems to be 2 sides to the story: better area in a quad core for heat dissipation vs. lesser heat dissipation from a dual core.
The w150ER is pretty much the same as the w170ER and judging by this review:
Review Clevo W150ER Barebone Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
The CPU temperature does seem to be a problem at high loads (95ºC). But, as I said, now I'm wondering if I'd really be better off with the i5 and it's smaller area, despite having lower TDP. -
Not to disparage the fine people at notebookcheck, but according to them " ...in our multiple-hour stress test (full load with Furmark & Prime)" This is just not a real world usage.
In no scenario are you going to be putting both your CPU and GPU on load for "multiple hours". Even in a game like Battlefield 3 you won't be doing this.
Your CPU may reach those temps if you're trans-coding video or audio for five hours straight, and your GPU may reach those temps if your rendering a 30 second Pixar film. -
Hey guys. Looking to upgrade the HDD on my Sager NP6175 but I haven't opened it up/seen how it's laid out or its placement difficulty. Looking to put in one of these Newegg.com - Intel 520 Series Cherryville SSDSC2CW240A3K5 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Should I be alright?
-
Good day everyone !
This is my first post here.
I consider buying a w170er, since i have had 2 m570ru and was pretty satisfied with it (i'm writing this with a 5 years old m570ru).
I only run linux and am happy with it.
Has anyone succeeded in installing linux on w170er ? What about nvidia optimus on linux ?
Thanks for your answers... -
-
Thanks a lot, i will follow this thread...
-
If you believe that 240GB will be plenty of space for your software and files, then it will be just fine. Intel makes excellent, reliable Solid-State drives. Intel does tend to be a bit more pricey than most of the competition, so you may want to also check out the Samsung 830 Series or Crucial M4 SSD which should be around 256GB.
Any 2.5-inch SSD SATA II or SATA III should work in your system. -
I am planning to buy this laptop from xotic.
How is the build quality and are there any issues? -
I just got this laptop today! In a nutshell: Has pretty good build quality, not the best I've seen, but it's better than most. Heat is no better than NP6165, but that doesn't really matter to me. Latest NVIDIA drivers have no optimus problems others have reported (for me anyway). I like the touchpad texture, I hates my older HP, which had a glossy texture, and it's better than my ASUS G73JH, which had a semi-rubber texture. I would recommend using with the custom BIOS. (Can't think of the name right now. *smile*). Plays my games fine, but that is what my desktop is really for. Came with a carrying case, though I didn't order one? I wasn't charged for it. 95% Gamut is awesome! (If you upgraded it.) And general computing (internet surfing, video watching, blah blah) is of course, perfect.

Hi!
I have Clevo W170ER which I bought in Russia under DNS brand. It came with i5-2520M CPU which has TPD=35W. I want to replace it to i7-3610QM CPU. According to specification it is possible. The only thing I am aware of it is cooling heatsink because i7 has TPD=45W. Is it possible to change CPU without changing the cooling system; is it the same for both for both CPUs?
Thanks. -

Has anyone added an SSD to this unit, Is the screen sharp and clear, how bad is the reflection? How bad is the fan noise some folks are talking about? Anyone have any feedback on this system?
-
Just bought that laptop from keynux.
i installed win7 and linux/opensuse12.2.
Works like a charm.
Systems are on a crucial M4 ssd. Now problems till now.
Fan is very silent until nvidia video card is used => optimus is useful. -
-
-
i have no problem til now with the crucial m4 ssd which seems to be reliable.
opensuse linux boots almost instantaneously and win7 is slower, almost 20 seconds.
But both are faster than on the classical hard disk i had before -
Have not pulled the trigger yet. Still Worried about the loundness of fans and keyboard after reading some of the posts. Can someone post about these issues?
-
fans are very quiet for me

I finally broke down and bought the NP6175 for my graphic design business. I can't wait to get it (hopefully next week). I noticed there aren't any videos on YouTube that show this model so I am hoping to change that when I get mine! I think for the money, this machine is pretty much AWESOME
However, I'm wanting to install a Crucial M4 SSD when I get it in. I built it with the 750GB HDD only. I already know how to image and format the HDD after so I'm good there. Can someone explain how to actually do the installation or point me to a video that shows the location of the HDD currently and where I will move it to and replace with the SSD. If all you can provide is a decription of the locations and what needs to be done, I'm sure I can manage. Thanks in advance for your help. -

Step one: Remove bottom cover
Step two: Replace HDD
It's all open and easy to work on. -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Just as easy as Meaker mentioned. There will also be a owners manual on the drivers disc which will include pics and steps on how to do it.
-
Thanks for the help. If I ever get it, I will give 'er a try. And thanks to Xotic PC for all the great customer service throughout the whole process. Thank you as well Meaker.

Well I finally got it in yesterday, took a month to get it over to Afghanistan via Registered Mail. Apharently a month is fast for registered mail as they said it could have taken 2 months, most everything else only takes 2 weeks at most. I put my 256 M4 SSD in and switched the 750 7200rpm to the 2nd bay and had to restart a few times for it to see the drive but works fine now. The fan noise is very quite for me, no noticable loudness. Start-up is 15 seconds max with the SSD! I would definately recommend the upgraded 90% gamut glossy screen, it does have the reflection but it is so bright that the only thing that may cause a problem is if the actual sun were directly behind you, and if it did bother you that much then you could buy a matte screen protector and still get the added benefit of the better screen gamut, it's beautiful. I did notice that Xotic is not even offering this model any more on their website, I would like to know why that is? May be why they recommended to me a month and a half ago that I get this one??? They also installed the wrong operating system but we will see how they handle that.

Glad to hear the computer has gotten to you safely and is working out for ya! Its always tough to predict how long it will take to get to an APO address. I've seen anywhere form 1 week to 2 months and really no way to predict what it will be. Once USPS hands it over to the Military post, its up to them how long it takes.
The NP6175 did recently get phased out by Sager so all resellers have removed it since its no longer available. That wouldn't have any reason why this was recommended to you. Sager never tells us ahead of time when a particular model will go end of life. They just tell us one day they're all gone and to remove it so it came as a surprise to us too.
Have you been in touch with anyone about the wrong OS yet. If not click on my name in my sig and that will open up an email. Please send me your order number and i'll take a look into what happened. -
A while ago I noticed that my W170ER started to make a popping sound. At the beginning I wasn't sure what was causing it, first I thought it was the harddisk.
Later it seemed to come from the speakers, but to be sure it wasn't the harddisk, I installed a new SSD and removed the orignal harddisk. Unfortunately the problem wasn't solved with the SSD installed.
Moments when the popping sound occurs:
- during booting.
- at random in the OS.
- while muting/unmuting by clicking on the speaker symbol.
Later I tried with headphones, the popping sound was hearable through it.
I tried a lot of different drivers too, all seemed to have the same problem.
Any idea what's causing this? Maybe a hardware failure?

Sounds like some interference with the inbuilt sound chip. Maybe a slightly loose cable inside somewhere.

Hi!
I have notebook Clevo W170ER and I want to change its battery. From the manual I found out that there are two models (48.84WH and 62.16WH) which are suitable for my notebook. Anybody knows the names of these batteries models?
Thanks! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Both are compatible if they are mentioned in the manual.
BAT-B5105M is the high capacity model I believe. -
Hiya,
Sorry to necro this thread, but I'm having an issue with my np6175. It does not power on (no lights, no fans). I've tried two different power bricks, I've looked at all the contacts and pins near the power connectors and removed the CMOS battery wire for a few seconds in an attempt to reset it. The laptop looks like it's getting NO power at all. Usually when you plug it into the wall, at least one of the lights will go on.
I contacted manufacturer and they're quoting $500 for the motherboard. So I have two questions:
-What else could it be? Anything else I can try that would prevent the laptop from receiving power?
-How easy is it to find (and replace) the motherboard for this specific laptop?
Thanks in advance! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You would need to search places like ebay, if it refuses to power on at all there is a short somewhere or a broken connection due to device failure. Remove everything you can to be as sure as possible (take motherboard out of case, run with one stick of ram, an external display and a keyboard only.
