To be honest i am a bit underwhelmed by the noise levels shown in jarrod's review. I mean even an overbred monstrocity such as the new aero runs way below 50db under load. Not to speak of the new blade or the lenovo y740. Otherwise i am very much convinced that the clevo beats the tongfang alternatives hands down.

I'm comparing this laptop with dell g5. the dell has tb3, a bigger battery and has Ubuntu preinstalled, so Linux will work better on this machine.
according to you, clevo p970e works with linux?

Take a look at @OWNORDISOWN's review. Power supply is insufficient and battery can drain during intense use. Also, thermals out of the box are not great, 60 Hz screen is pretty bad and build quality is dubious.

Different balance of priorities in Dell, a bit more focused on check boxes.

As there don't seem to be any comments yet from anyone with a P970, here's some first impressions:

My P970 with the 2060 arrived on Monday from PCSpecialist. Initial impressions are very positive although I haven't had time to really put it through its paces. At idle it runs quietly with CPU temperatures in high 30s. Fan noise under load seems similar to a P670. Lots of underside ventilation so should benefit hugely from a cooling pad. You can tell that they've really tried to address the thermals with this new chassis, possibly in response to the feedback on the P950.

Keyboard is good to use and the fingerprint sensor in the touchpad is a handy feature. My young daughter really likes the three-section RGB backlighting on the keyboard, perhaps a little too much for the long-term health of the laptop...

Screen looks good to the untrained eye. Speakers are adequate, but don't expect anything too great from them; in particular they're really lacking base, but this seems standard for laptops these days.

Implemented a -0.125 undervolt via Throttlestop that seems very stable. Tried a -0.150 and it crashes immediately, so not really worth pushing it further than 0.125.

    Benchmark results (with -0.125 undervolt):
    Cinebench: 1145 multi /173 single.
    Time spy: 5979 overall / 5855 graphics / 6796 CPU
    Fire strike: 14219 overall / 15623 graphics / 16737 CPU / 7486 combined

Benchmark scores seem to be at the top end of what can be expected for this spec without overclocking and only a tiny bit off of the 2070m max q, so quite happy with them. It remains to be seen whether there is any power-limiting of the CPU when the GPU is in use, as has been reported for the P960. Likewise I can't yet provide a full impression of temperatures under a sustained load.

Thank you for this fantastic input!

    How are the dimensions/footprint?
    Any backlight bleed?
    Is the fan noise annoying?

It's about an inch smaller in width and depth than my P670, and a cm less thick. It's noticeably lighter and less 'chunky'. It doesn't feel flimsy, but with the thinness and all the underside grating and thinner bezels, it does seem a little more 'delicate' (whether it actually is, I don't know and would ideally not like to find out :)). For a 17" laptop, it's very portable, and would be great for someone who wants a big screen but also needs some mobility, but I don't think I would want to be using it on the move every day as I don't think it would stand that for e.g. 3 years. The power adaptor is also smaller despite both being 180W, although seems a similar weight. Haven't tested backlight bleeding yet, I'll try to do that this evening. The fan is either off or a gentle hum at idle. Under load it does get relatively loud, but not unexpectedly so. Suspect it will come down to everyone's personal tolerance.

I haven't tried to install Linux, so I can't comment on that. I also don't do video editing, so can't comment beyond saying that so far it seems to be a decent implementation of a 8750/2600 spec in a laptop, so should perform 'to spec'. Sorry if that's not terribly helpful...

Tested backlight bleed, and there is a moderate amount in the top right corner. Doesn't bother me personally, and I wouldn't have noticed without testing a black screen in a dark room, but it may be more than some people would like.

Yes! I am from Belgium and ordering it at a Dutch reseller (laptoppartsforless)

    P970ED (rtx 2060)
    Thermal pad upgrade
    Kingston hyper x 2x8gb 2400mhz
    Crucial mx500 500gb ssd
    Crucial P1 3D NAND 500Gb NVMe M.2 SSD
    Intel AC-9260 M.2 (1.73Gbps, 802.11AC) + BT 5.0
    In glass fingerprint scanner

I was debating just getting a 1Tb m2 ssd, but eventually swayed to the flexibility of 2x500gb.
For me the extra cost for an rtx 2070 max q is not worth it in Europe. (Minimum 220 euros more)

Thermal pad upgrade is interesting. Any reason getting the two 500 drives rather than a single 1tb?

I just like splitting data between two physical disks (for example my music production/graphical projects), it also helps me to keep my drives cleaner. The more space I have, the more things I keep installed. Another nice thing is, that it helps that when one drive fails I can reinstall windows on the other very quickly :)

You can partition a single drive and at 1tb it will be faster than a single 500gb drive.

Just ordered the P970ED from XOTICPC. Super stoked! Got the anti-backlight bleed selection and the 30 day dead pixel warranty. I hope the quality is good. I've gone through 3 Asus ROG Strix Scars already, returning 2 due to DOA, one due to a faulty speaker, and also returned a Strix Scar 2 due to bad backlight bleed and coil whine.

I am looking at retiring p670SEs and replacing them with these, however I just found out that the P970EFs do NOT have IPS panels. I would be interested to know how the panels in the P970EFs compare to the Chi Mei N173HGE in my p670SEs.

Per Sager as of now this has an ADS panel:
BOE NV173FHM-N44 which should be much better than the old TN. I didn't know anything about ADS until now but it seems to be a similar to IPS.

IPS is an LG patent, the other techs are similar but cant borrow the name. Often they are called IPS like. They can make tweaks trading a bit of viewing angle for response time etc.

It gets complicated deep diving into the tech bit it's all a big step forward.

Many thanks for your impressions, Macin!

You say the noise level is similar to the P670. I didn't have that, so I don't exactly know what that means but I've read a review that said that it's 49-50 dB under load (not too bad and not too good), however, fans are audible even when idle and they are a bit erratic and high-pitched. Is that fair to say to the P670 and/or the P970?

At idle or for e.g. internet browsing it's silent/unnoticeable - they are often off or at minimum. No problems at all with high-pitched noises. If you do a CPU/GPU intensive task like e.g. gaming / benchmarking it rapidly and unavoidably goes up to 'moderately loud'; this is not a quiet laptop under load.

A bit of a further update on CPU temperatures rapidly spike to 80-85C in the 75W turbo boost phase under multi-core load, but under sustained loads (45W), CPU temperatures stabilise in the 60s (and GPU seems to be the same). Given the relatively low sustained temperatures, there is probably room for playing around with fan profiles to trade a bit of extra heat for quieter fan noise.

My general impression is that thermals are very firmly under control with this laptop, but that comes at the expense of noise. Given the thin-and-light form factor, this is probably as good as you could hope for.

    Im interested in this model

    Is the body all metal
Is it nost like a msi gs75?
    Or like a mac book

Also if i would want to upgrade the screen to 4k myself any info on whether this would be difficult? Is it a 40 pin connector evd etc compatuble with the screens common on clevo?

Any nbr discount code? I am shopping mostly this the p17 clevo and thr strix 2 at xotic pc( ca resident unfortunately) anyone want to pm me and bid for my business? I am a returning xotic customer from years ago

In your opinion what has more horsepower this model with 2080 maxq or the full 2070 model savijg about 300 ?
    Which can overclock farther

The more I look into it the more i see that maxq is entirely software

Other models have a 2060 gtx then a 2070 maxq barely any faster.
Already flashed the 2070 maxq in tong fang laptops to 2070 gtx.
Also jist with afterburner you can change the tdp I think max q laptops are better than a lot of people think.

With the 150 off I built one of these for 1750 similar to a triton 500 with a 2060

I feel like it will be a similar build quality but I barely have any reviews to go by.

I don't care about egpu. 3 storage sources on a thin light is big. I would like to know the name of the panel used

    Im going for so far

    Sager no brand
    16 gb 3000 ram
    Windows
    Delete hdd
Nothing else buying storage and 16 gb ram on newegg credit card

The weird thing is there are only 2 machines reasonably priced that have gsync. The PB71EF-G (and the 15" version) and the Lenovo Y740. The Lenovo Y740 is a thin and light, so it only has maxQ 2070/2080, and the PB71/51 are also on the thinner side, and the one review of the PB51 on youtube exhibited pretty high temperatures and it sounded like a vacuum cleaner. I don't understand why there isn't a big fat clevo with gsync in the same price range.

Because of the 150 off the price up to a 2080 maxq is 600 dollars.

I still haven't done it but anyone want to sell me on a 2080 max q being worth 600 bucks?
I mean it has the more ram 8 gb vs 6gb
    Both are 256 bit

I do plan on uhd gaming at some point

The PB series is fatter for better performance. It hits the sweet spot you are talking about.

I went for it ordered one

At the last second I though about the 950 it had 250 off but it translated to 150 price difference for the 17 inch screen.
All other things being functionally the same

I'm not sure it was tough but I just think the bigger screen Will be nice

The. 950 I don't know it only seems to come with the 2070 mqversion.

I suppose we can call it the 16 inch version with a 15.6 inch screen.

Or its like the gs stealth non thin . With a screen bezel.

Its price difference is only 50 so for that id go for rhe bigger screen but sager had 250 off of that and 150 off the one I ended up getting.

It's sort of tough . should probably combine the 3 models into one owner thread

The 950 with a 2070 mq can be out the door with windows for 1550 which is the cheapest thing out there metal body or not and it is like an msi stealth.

I ended up ugrading the ram to 3000 and that's it for 1750 out the door. Still significantly less than a stealth or triton or zephyrus. Really there is no 17 inch triton

Can anyone advise me on 2060 vs 2070Mq?

Trying to justify the 200 Euro premium but based on Notebookcheck’s comparison, the 2060 outperforms the 2070MQ. Is there something I’m missing here because that doesn’t make a lot of sense to pay 200 extra for lesser performance.

    I got the 2070
For me it was 100 difference

I feel that when overcooked the 2070 mq will outperform the 2060. It has more headroom ans is running cooler now it is using maxq now

Possibly alter the laptop someday and flash the 2070 MP bios on it.
Also someday game in uhd and it is better as is now

It is definitely better I'm not sure if its 200 better I think so

It is a 256 bit interface 8 gb vram that is what you need for uhd gaming.
