That is true, and the P650 probably has a larger fin area than the P950. I just don't want people to get the wrong idea about the P950 model and think that it is a butchered version of the P650. There are trade offs to be made here and it comes down to what the buyer values the most, thinner and lighter or heavier and thicker but with better thermals?

 

I fully have to agree. The P950 was so close to being a perfect laptop for me on paper and based on reviews. However, with the lack of a prema bios and a fan curve that potentially isn't going to be fixed in the next couple of months, it was enough to push me away.

 

There are trade offs for all machines, that's just engineering for you. It's part of what makes notebooks more interesting than desktops due to those tighter requirements.

The Defiance III is their branding of the P650 - not sure if they're going to bring in the full 1060 P950HP6 chassis or not.

 

Usually I think they have the same model listed but have the GPU as a selectable option.

 

Nope, just the 1070. I emailed to ask if they're going to get the 1060 as an option but they say no (although they did say they had no plans for the P950 chassis at all, so who knows).

 

That's what I mean, if they were going to offer it then it would be there rather than a new model. It's not so they are not offering it at the moment.

 

How exactly do you install the Clevo Control Center AP once it's downloaded? I'm on Control Center AP v5.0001.1.25. But there is a Control Center AP 5.0001.1.33 version out.

 

ALWAYS uninstall the old version first, restart, install the new version, restart, done!

 

Is the fan situation sorted out already? This laptop has my preference but i'll probably buy with a gtx 1060

Is there any difference between the P950HR with 1060 gtx and the Max Q 1070 (besides the price and gtx)?

 

I'm probably getting the Defiance XS (p950hr/np8952)...I'm just waiting on more benchmarks from the 1070 Max-Q. Also does anyone know what the TDP is for the 1070-Max Q in this laptop? it says 80-90 but which one is it?

Also, I'm deciding whether to get a 500 gb ssd + 2tb 5400 hdd, or a 1tb ssd and 1tb hdd. The first config is about £80 cheaper. What would people suggest?

Fan issue is not sorted out. CPU fan is on when doing general productivity tasks, browsing web, etc.

 

Which EC do you have? I haven't tried any P950HP6 but in the P950HR with the new EC the fans only kicked in on games, benchmarks or heavy tasks.

 

I'm a noob to these forums, so forgive me if I don't understand what "EC" means? Mind helping me find out where to check that?

 

Hehe ok, reboot and enter your BIOS (F2 when you see the boot logo) and in the first BIOS screen you can check the BIOS and EC version at the bottom.

Well, on the Clevo e-channel the last one is the same as yours, maybe you'll have to wait for a new one to come up.

That's a huge shame. I wonder what the issue is then. Why doesn't the P950HR have the same issue as the HP6 if they are running oon the same EC as you said?

 

Sorry i haven't explained that well, the EC's are different for each model, the P950HR has a different one and the fans behave ok. You have to wait for a new one for the P950HP6 to come out.

 

I gotcha. So you are saying I'm running the latest EC there is. How do I make myself aware as to when these new EC's come out?

Yes, any difference in chips or heatsink you do want to tweak the curve.

 

What a shame about the fan noise on this model. With CPU > Ram > Weight > I/O > Fit/finish being my current search criteria, i thought "she was the one" but this fan noise hangup might push me right into the noticeably more expensive arms of the Aero 14. Sucks.

 

Can i check if it's possible to use the discrete graphics card and connect it to a 120-144hz monitor for gaming?

Clevo supposed ot fix it with new EC updates or something.

 

This black line in the bottom right of my laptop screen appeared when I started watching a video. I played a youtube video that had a white screen to display the issue more prominently. However, the black line disspeared after restarting my laptop. Any clue how this happened? The black line is like right at the top of the Windows taskbar so I wasn't able to notice it until I started watching a fullscreen video. Restarting the laptop seemed to fixed the issue. I do have a 30 day pixel warranty, but it can't be a pixel issue.

Also, when I did restart the laptop, the black line went away when the Windows "Restarting Windows..." blue screen comes up when you hit the shutdown/restart button. Issue is gone after restarting. Super weird. I'm so confused.

 

I can't seem to get my GTX 1070 enabled on my external monitor... Seems to be falling back to the integrated Intel gpu rather than the nvidia.

Are there any other reviews of the 950HR floating about on the net? Only one I've seen is the gentech video review. Or is it just too new/noone besides me wants it?

 

I'm really close to getting this, but I really want the 120Hz screen. Has anybody found either prebuilt or custom versions in the US with the 120Hz screen? I saw they have it on HIDevolution but the price difference for 60Hz prebuilt with Windows 10 on Amazon/NewEgg and custom built with 120Hz and no OS from HIDevolution is almost $200! If it was ~$50 more with no OS or ~$100 with Windows 10 I wouldn't have an issue but $200 is a little steep. If anyone has any other options I'd really appreciate it.

Has the fan curve been fixed yet? It looks like getting a BIOS update from any of the third party builders would be hard so if there isn't an update yet it seems like it isn't a good idea to invest in one of these, right? Or am I wrong here?

 

We always make the latest BIOS files available to our buyers on request so we can make sure they flash the correct file. So any updates and you are covered.

 

As I'm reading up more on Clevo based systems that's what I'm seeing is normal. That's not a big deal then. Has there been a new BIOS released that fixes the fan curve or is there still a wait to hear from Clevo?

Hello there, I've just receive my laptop today from a local dealer in Malaysia ( TECH ARMORY ). I'm just wondering is it normal to have the CPU temp hovering around 49c? or do i have to something about it. Another issue is that the fan kicks in quite frequently. I'm guessing by reading the comments above its about the BIOS? I need to know is there any new BIOS to adjust the fan curve. Thanks!

 

Anyone here used cemu on their p950s? Does Breath of the Wild run at 30fps?

 

Have you checked out some benchmarks of the 1060 and 1070? If you go for somewhere in the middle that's how it would perform.

Couldn't have said it better, received this laptop about 2 weeks ago and I appreciate the aesthetics but the fan curve is just absurd.
