There are some leaked specs out there for the Intel Optane products (as of yesterday), when you look at the table in the article where the Optane device is compared to a Samsung 960 PRO it is promising but not Earth shattering.
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/02/14/optane_intel_spec_leak/
Of course this is one of the first Optane products that may be available so the technology will only get better from here. It does not mean that I would go and tear out my Samsung 960 PRO's for an Optane in slot 3.
Being a bit more conservative about being on that bleeding edge of technology I will wait until 2nd or 3rd generation products come along than then review where that stands, relative to whatever the state of technology will be at the time (likely there will even be an improved version following the Samsung 960 PRO) and make a decision then on what to do with slot 3.
You can bet that those first Optane devices will be pretty expensive and only come down after the demand for them in data centers tapers off and general acceptance of the drive as the only storage device in some notebooks becomes commonplace.
Another great discussion is down in the threads of this article;

Hi everyone, I'm looking for any videos for the KM1, review, tear down, benchmark, game play or anything, please let me know if there is any.
Thank you in advance.initialjie likes this. -

The KM1 is virtually identical to the DM2/3, so any videos showing a teardown of that model will apply here.

It might be worth reflashing your BIOS/EC because that is odd.

4k random read/write just doesn't have equal, its basically what we would call it a performance level in between PCIE SSDs and RAM disk, not to metion its been 3-4 yrs since samsung released their first PCIE SSDs and had time to mature firmware, controller, driver etc etc... this is still an early stage for optane and its already looking damn good.

You would need to go to your reseller for the files.

As far as the differences between the DM3 and the HK1 it is a few percentage points of a bump due to the higher base and boost clock speeds of the CPU. I have yet to see anything that would be meaningful as far as a performance boost for the Z270 chipset. Any benefits from the Z270 may take longer to realize and also when the Optane hardware hits general availability. You can consider Z270 as "future proofing" your hardware for a year or so beyond what you would experience with a DM3.
A few percentage points of a bump upwards is also a difference that can be easily overwhelmed by other changes you can do to any K series chip (better thermal interface materials, better cooling or even cleaning the dirt out of the fins on the heat sink).
You would think that all HK1 owners should have roughly the same benchmarking scores but some people are more accomplished tuners or use forced air cooling. There is probably at least a 5% performance difference just in how a system tunes up and the silicon lottery of components.
I can run about 4.8 GHz reliably in heavy gaining mode before I start getting thermal throttling messages from the system (I set up audible alarms when I exceed 95c on any core or the ring). Maybe a bit more effort in tuning (undervolting) and when it is stable faster RAM can give me another 100 MHz or so of clock speed or 1% more performance.initialjie, lctalley0109, TBoneSan and 2 others like this. -

I play allot of Fallout4 with every setting dialed up to the absolute maximum, tweaks made in the .ini files to extend fade distances and effects and about 100 mods that include a large number of immersive/ 4K renderings. Sometimes I will get a beep-beep thermal alarm when FO4 is changing scenes or when there is something going on in the game with high pitched battles or a large amount of rendering.
Really those are the actual targets I am trying to meet with overclocking/performance; to keep game play at better than 60 fps, temperatures down and the system stable.
Benchmarking is just a tool for me to say "this change was better than that change".
Yesterday I thought that I had really screwed things up and spent a couple of hours chasing down what I thought were tuning issues with the SLI'ed 1080's. What I finally figured out was that SLI had gotten turned off. If I had paid closer attention to the thermal and gpu stats on both cards I would of seen it; Instead I was obsessed only with what 3DMark was telling me. I was horrified when scores went from the 15,000's down to less than 9000.

One limitation that we all need to deal with on any P870 sub-model is there is only just so much you can do to move air through the chassis and the relatively small surface areas of the heat sink radiators and their ability to dissipate heat. When you are moving ~500 watts of power in to a notebook and it is coming out as heat at the back end it does warm up a room.initialjie and Jon Webb like this. -

Looks like my P870KM1 will be deliver tomorrow. Donald suggested that I should contact you to help me set up this laptop properly.
I'm pretty much a noob with modern computers. I have never own a laptop and have never overclock any of my computers. If you can give me some pointers as to what I should do to make it run optimally I would very much appreciate it.
I'm planning on using this laptop for only three things. First, to play my favorite game. Second, to access my pension and IRA (I would prefer that this laptop to not be part of my home network, not sure how to do that). And lastly, for VR when the technology matures a little bit more.
@Donald Weatherford
Thank you for everything, my apology for making you work a harder that day.
Edit: Remember when I told you about the picture my daughter drew? My son in law made it into an avatar for me.hmscott, Gursimran82956 and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

you tagged the wrong Donald there, he's @Donald@HIDevolution not Weatherford
Now Mr. Weatherford will wonder what's going on here
Anyway, when you get your machine, tag me and I will PM you so we can setup a TeamViewer Session to teach you everything, we will also tweak your Windows 10 to disable all privacy invasion stuff / telemetry
I highly recommend when you turn on the laptop, do not connect to a Wifi network when prompted in the initial setup wizard, that way, you can create a local account rather than be forced to login with a Microsoft account. when you get the Wifi networks choice to connect to one, just hit the SKIP link in the bottom left to proceed with the setup wizard then create a local account
once you are logged into Windows then only connect to your Wifi networkGursimran82956 likes this. -

About TeamViewer, is it something I need to download? Does it matter if I install my antivirus software (ESET) beforehand?
So, all I should be doing is run the setup (no CAT5 connecting to the router/modem) skipping "WiFi network choice", then plug in my CAT5 cable and wait for you. Do I need a microphone? -

Sure you can have your AV installed, I use ESET NOD32 as well
and yes that's how you would need to do it about the initial setup
your laptop has a built in microphone integrated into the webcam, we need it to communicate offcourse, TeamViewer has a built in VOiP -

Hi, My KM1 arrived about an hour ago, the computer is set up and Eset and Teamviewer is installed. I believe it might be night time where you are. I live in Los Angeles and I stay up pretty late. I'll check this thread often. -

I was able to hook up with @Phoenix this afternoon for a few hours. At first I didn't know what kind of optimization he was going to help me with, but over the next three hours he completely blew me away with the changes both internally and to the user interface. As I'm looking at the screen right now, there is almost nothing left over from the Windows 10 desktop, even the start menu looks exactly like windows 7. I cannot be more happy with the results. Thank you Phoenix, I learned quite a bit from you today. I'll post a picture tomorrow.
