indeed, not worried about Kaby Lake as Prema BIOS will add support to that, just disappointed that now I don't have the best which would be awesome, as in, having max storage with 3 m.2 slots for max storage pwnage

I think if it can be done with a BIOS update on the P870DM2/3, then it should work on the P870DM as well since the sockets are the same.

Maybe @Prema can shed some light on this

its pretty safe to assume that u can get it for the same price as current DM3 models at similar config :)

@Phoenix relax, youre not really missing out on anything :D save your bucks for the next iteration ;)

@Phoenix, this literally has one more 4x M.2 slot due to the Z270 Chipset.
Current P870DMx user won't really see anything new over their current configs, which will be Kaby Lake Ready and (with the Mod) have all the new features that come along with it (e.g. adaptive AVX clocking).
If it calms you to know: A bunch of us here (incl. myself) where aware of this system for the better half of last year and still opted to get the P870DM2/3. ;)

Z270 does not really offer all that much more interesting, it has a few more PCI-E lanes but these all still share the same DMI 3.0 link to the CPU.

I thought Z270 was meant to increase the bandwidth limit through the DMI? If it doesn't, I see very little point for it.

The additional 4 lanes (Z270s 30 HSIO vs Z170s 26) lanes are used for the 3rd M.2 slot.

Yes, I know Z270 has 4 extra PCI/e 3.0 chipset lanes (up to 24 from 20) but... I also thought that part of the big deal about it was that the DMI's maximum bandwidth limit (which I believe is PCI/e 3.0 x4 one-way) was going to be bumped significantly. If it's still at that, then an extra M.2 slot is... not very much, I think.

It's more so you can have a wider range of stuff rather than more bandwidth second to second.

PCI-E 4.0 is not ready so you can't get more bandwidth per pin and it's the same socket and pin compatible so you don't have more pins.

Maintaining the same socket, yes. Then again this is the main differentiation between high end and main stream platforms.

Maybe PCI/e 4.0 will help us in the end. Or maybe Skylake-E notebooks will be a thing and we can have glorious 44 lanes on the CPU :D

What I cannot find is, do the "Kaby Lake" chipsets have a cap on PCIe NVMe SSD Read/Write speeds.

Don't think read writes would be limited. Unless the lanes get super saturated in the worst case insane load scenarios.

This is what I was asking about with the DMI. As far as I know, the cap on max data transferred through it (not including bursts) is about PCI/e 3.0 x4's worth, or around 4GB/s. This is why RAID-ing never passes that amount of data under any length of duration, and is known to have diminishing returns.

I thought Z270 was supposed to increase this amount, but Meaker said it's a physical barrier to pass, and thus it won't be surpassing it until at least the next CPU socket.

So, theoretically, 2x 960 Pro in RAID 0 would be able to give upwards of 6,000MB/s sequential Read and 3,500MB/s sequential Write, and 3x 960 Pro in RAID 0 would give upwards of 9,000MB/s sequential Read and 5,300MB/s sequential Write?

    Hey I like even numbers, so a 2 + 2 drive setup is better than a 3 + 2! :D

Also, unless you have 12TB internal currently you aren't limited even on the DM3. I will slowly work my way up there, even with my crazy storage needs that is more than I need.

    Yeah, something like that. 3500 sequential --> ~6000 in raid 0 --> ~9000 in raid 0

But with the existing chipsets, it'll quicker settle closer to about 3800 under any sustained load. Burst transfers can happen though.

PCI-E 3.0 theoretical is 1GB per lane, so the same 4GB/sec theoretical limit minus overheads (same as Z170).

This is what I am saying, the socket does not allow the link to be widened between the chipset and the CPU (PCI-e lanes = pins). This is the main reason x99 is 2011 pins vs Z170/Z270 1151.

3 drives can improve request latency of course as three controllers handling a stream can react faster than 1 even if they can't push more data through.

So, where is my math off? Why would it settle at about 3800MB if 12GB is the theoretical, minus overheads, with 3x PCIe 3.0 x4 SSDs in RAID 0?

No no. The DMI can handle 4GB/s *alone*. As in, if I was data-transferring from a NVMe drive and using an eGPU at the same time, the eGPU would falter.

Because that three lane highway has to merge into a single lane before it gets to the cpu (which it has to).

GPU's will be the same so all DM2/3 users should be fine.

While it's true that the total max bandwidth is the same, it's still nice in that a) you get more total storage space at PCIe x4 speeds and b) you can theoretically do 4K random reads from them all simultaneously even with relatively high QD and not saturate the DMI link.

Personally, I'm interested to see if the motherboard is physically compatible with the DM3 because that extra slot is quite useful to me, even if I have to remove the MB to get access to it since there are only two cutouts under the KB.

Any news on the P770/750KM1? If only the screen could be 4K HDR...

Don't expect anything like that for laptops for quite some time. Even if one shows up, the response time would be something like 100ms lol

4K 120Hz? Hope that's not just yet another tech news site getting things horribly wrong again.

Yeah, I'll believe that when I see it. I don't trust Aorus to cool even one 1080Ti. It's probably actually just 1080s and the press goofed yet again.
