Well the 13" is thicker so it is only a little more portable, both are very portable if for instance you are carrying them around in a backpack. Neither is portable in the way of a tablet or surface pro, or macbook air or such though.

If you get the clevo p65xSE (np8651) make sure you get the IPS screen, it may be standard or might cost $50 more as an upgrade, but the TN screen really is sub-par for a high-end laptop.

The p65xSE(np8651) will have a lot more power for gaming, but the w230SS (np7338) still has a 860m maxwell which should be plenty unless you need very high and ultra settings on your graphics. Both will be similarly powerful for almost all non-gaming needs you have. The money you save going with the np7338 might allow you to get an SSD which would be a major improvement in non-gaming performance.

Of course the np8651 also has the 15.6" screen which gives you a lot more screen space to work with.

On your budget I would probably choose the np7338 unless having that 970m is really important to you. You can probably even get a SSD to install yourself and still keep it under $1000 USD. If you get a sudden $500 windfall or something I might recommend differently though.

    Hey Guys,
After looking at some of the reviews and videos on the very first page I'm just curious as to how the storage works. Basically I've ordered the stock standard Clevo P650SE with the LG IPS FHD display. I left the HDD there and I'm going to get my own Crucial MX100 256gb SSD. Watching the videos however, they say that only 1 9mm and 2 7mm drives can fit in the storage area. The Crucial I ordered is a 7mm drive. But I wanted to know if it could still fit considering the HDD is already in there. Is the HDD 7mm as well? If it's not would I have to order yet another HDD that is 7mm?

Sorry if this is really basic stuff, this is kind of my first time dealing with the actual internals of laptops/desktops.

    Cheers,

That's exactly what I did! The stock drive is 9.5mm I'm 99% sure. Once I receive the laptop, I will have to sell it locally and put this 7mm drive instead. (Then I will have a 256GB MX100 SSD and a 500GB HDD). Either way the stock drive is crappy, it's on SATA II interface. The drive I linked is SATA III and 7200rpm :))

Don't forget that the PSU can DELIVER 180W of power, but for the PSU to deliver 180W it may have to draw up to 230W of power from the socket, depending on the efficiency of the PSU.

At a mere 80% efficiency it draws a whopping 225W and is still within specs..
I myself got it up to 220W while loading all 8 cores with Pi and the 980m maxed out.
    So it's not easy.

How important is gaming to you. If it is then the 970M is the NP8651 is going to really outperform the 860M in the NP7338. If casual gaming was more your thing and portability was very high on your list then the NP7338 would be a good choice.

Could you direct me to an HDD that would be able to fit with the SSD i ordered?

Also if I were to get an M.2 SSD, does this Samsung Evo 840 fit? It looks a little bigger than the other ones I've seen.

    That´s a mSATA ssd, not a M.2 SATA ssd.

Oh wow. I take it M.2 SSDs are quite expensive then? I'm trying to find one through Amazon, but I'm not really sure where else to look. Is there a M.2 Sata SSD going around for about $100? Or is that just unrealistic?
If it doesn't work out I may have to just replace the 9mm HDD with one I can order from Amazon instead.

Edited my last post. Check it out.

Regarding your question: it depends on the capacity. How much gb do you want?

    Hey thanks for that!
I actually looked at the comparisons and saw the 180gb M.2 Intel SSD. At $10 more I think thats a fair upgrade! It's awesome as well, due to the small size that it can be shipped to New Zealand at a cheap cost, so I won't have to ship it to my hotel address while I'm over there.
    Thanks for you help!

What comparisons did you look at?
    Edit: nevermind

The Crucial M550 is a much better drive than the Intel 530 despite the lower capacity. But if it´s capacity you´re after then go for the Intel ssd. Have you abandoned the slim 1tb hdd route?

If you scroll down on that amazon page, it compares other SSDs to the one you linked me. They looked fairly similar with the shown specs but the Intel just had a larger capacity. I was just taking it as it was, I don't actually know much more about SSDs and all that, sorry for the lack of knowledge. So you recommend the M550 over the Intel? I'm not sure I solely want capacity over performance, but rather value for money, if that makes sense.

I was considering the HDD route. I could take $60 off my order from HIDevolution for them to get rid of the stock standard HDD and use that to get a 7mm HDD, but then I think that would end up costing me more as the HDDs linked costed around $100 again, so thats a $40 surplus. I understand this might sound ridiculous to you with me being so nitpicky about $40, but I'm a tad tight for money, and was setting out on buying a laptop under a budget so I'm trying to keep costs down wherever I can. I can return the MX100 for $8 to Amazon and use the refunded money to get one of the M.2 SSD's, so I only lose out on about $15 instead.

NP8651, just put 8 GB RAM if your reseller doesn't and you're fine. After a while consider to add an SSD for the OS. If you are considering portability as a main factor, you should buy the np7338 ONLY if you really don't have room for a 15'. Otherwise, I travel a lot with a 15' and it's perfectly fine.

I'm in the same situation as you. Here is what I'm doing...
    1. Order laptop with the stock 1TB SATA 2 Drive
    2. Order MX100 SSD
    3. Sell locally the 1TB SATA 2 Drive for around ~50
    4. Buy this drive for ~50
    5. You now have a system with an MX100 and a 500gb SATA 3 HDD

Be aware for your warranty you would want to keep the original HDD in case you need to return the machine.

Guys I am so sorry but I am heavily considering the X7 Pro again compared to this laptop.

Seems like the X7 no longer throttles from people that actually have it.

Anyone have any thoughts between these two laptops right out the gate?

Thought I might post here since I'm a proud owner of a P651SG which I took delivery of on 18th of December from SCAN and its one hell of a machine.Though I've got a couple questions I'm needing answers for if anyone is wanting to help me out.

Could other owners of the P651SG with a 980m fitted to it possibly run Unigine's Heaven Benchmark 4.0 for me with these following settings and let me know your results:
    Preset: Custom
    API: DirectX 11
    Quality: High
    Tessellation: Normal
    Stereo 3D: Disabled
    Multi-Monitor: Disabled
    Anti-Aliasing: Off
    Full-Screen: On
    Resolution: 1080p

I'm currently getting average results of Average FPS: 85.5 Max FPS: 192.3 and Min FPS: 25.6.

Looking at Notebookchecks results with this setting, they are supposedly getting 116.4FPS which I don't understand.

Also, if it might be down to my bios, which is on 1.03.02, could anyone let me know what the latest one is, where to find a safe version of it and how to correctly install it.

Thanks in advance to anyone that help me with this, its a big help.

This is nonsense... why sell a 1 TB drive for buying a 500 GB one? Because is SATA 3?

FYI, SATA 2 limit is 300 MB/S, which is waaaay more than any laptop spindle can use. Plus, the HDD you're recommending it's not even a SSDHD, so you won't even notice a speed improvement from the stock 1 TB drive.

But it's your money, you can waste it as you want :)

I might actually do it your way Sebi. It may actually work out cheaper to keep the MX100 instead of returning it to Amazon. I can remove the HDD and get $60 from HIDevolution. Pay $71 to get a 1TB 7mm HDD from Amazon ( Amazon.com: HGST Travelstar 7K1000 2.5-Inch 1TB 7200 RPM SATA III 32MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0J22423: Computers & Accessories) and use that in conjunction with the SSD leaving my M.2 slots free for any additions that may be necessary in the future.
Ill end up paying $10 more in either situation, but I think this would be the better one.

    Cheers,

Sorry, but you have 2 m.2 slots... Where I live the price of a M550 is basically the same for SATA or m.2 so technically I see your solution as a waste ;)

But is a personal choice. For me using the m.2 ports is a no-brainer. You may want to keep them free for later use, but just remember that only one has support for PCI express drives... So no XP941 RAID for us :(

Definitely a good idea. I went with the 500gb as that's enough for me personally. This option is also nice as it leaves 2 M.2 slots open to M.2 SSD's when they get cheaper and maybe even a 4G/LTE card as this laptop has a SIM card

I know that the 4710hq/4720hq will run DDR3L-1600, however, I have seem some configurations online that allows you to choose DDR3L-1866, does any one have actually run this processor with 1866 ram? Or will it just be capped at 1600? I found and article at tomshardware.com where they tested a GKill module with a i7 4770K, and the ram was supposedly recognized as 1866 even though Intel's database show the CPU as supporting only 1333 and 1600.

    Small potential problem:

My GPU indicator (the little speed indicator led on the far left) keeps blinking.
The manual says it should either be off for the integrated GPU, or full green for the discrete GPU.
HWInfo sees the GPU as switching constantly between iGPU and dGPU.
This can't be right or healthy.

    Any ideas?

If something is probing it for temperature then it may do that? If you close HWInfo or any other temp monitoring programs does it continue to blink?

Good tip, probing, I had a gadget on my desktop that shows me info (temps and stuff) from my dGPU.
It seems it doesn't just look and listen, it actually bothers and pesters my sweet 980m, so I killed it.

    Fixed.

p.s. Did you Prema-mod your P650 bios as well? The amount of options that unlocks is staggering!
980m is being worked on as we speak so prepare for a show down ;-)

So I've gone ahead and got rid of the stock standard 1tb HDD and ordered a 7mm 500gb HDD from Amazon.

I've never really dealt with things like this before so my question is do I need to purchase a few cables or cords in order to get both of them connected? I have no idea how theyre installed. I assume there should already be 1 cable atleast for the HDD, but do I need to buy a 2nd? If anyones done it before, please let me know how you did it. Perhaps through PM if necessary however I'm sure there may be other noobs like me who may look into this approach as well.

There will be no need for any cables, as the SSD or HDD will fit directly into the port inside the laptop. If you look at the internal pictures on the first page you can see how they are hooked up. (It is similar to putting in RAM or a PCIE card. You have a socket attached to the motherboard that it is inserted into.)

If you buy yours without any HDD/SSD you might want to check to make sure you either are getting a copy of windows/Linux/etc... or have one already as you will need an operating system for it.

    @Ningyo
    @Hutsady@XoticPC
    @redbytes

Thanks for the replies everyone. As the difference in portability seems to be marginal, I think I can manage a 15 inch np8651. It basically comes to the budget then. I mostly don't play fast fps/multiplayer games. More into rpgs like dragon age and especially witcher 3 when it comes out. The 860m should be sufficient for my needs but at $1230 on xoticpc, the 8651 seems like a very good deal.

Would you guys recommend the stock configuration of 8651 on xoticpc without any upgrades? With OS it would come to around $1300 so I won't have the budget to upgrade to the ips panel. I have never used a ssd before so missing out on one isn't a big issue for me right now.

What makes me even more confused is that an upgraded np7338 comes close to the gigabyte p34g in price (1200 without ssd) so I might as well go for it as it is much more portable.

Those games you mentioned are/will be very demanding so the 970m will serve you well. As for the stock config you can always upgrade all the components (except for CPU and GPU but there's no choice there anyway) so it's not an issue.

@abcdlaptop: Well if you are aiming for The Witcher 3 then the P650Sx is the obvious choice. TW3 is also the sole reason why I switched from the W230ST to this one ;)

By the way, I got a problem with making the Fingerprint to work. I can detect the device in the Device Manager (Fingerprint BIOS Reader), but it never shows as an login option in the Account Manager. I tried to uninstall/reinstall the driver, upgrade to the latest BIOS with no hope. Can anyone help me with this please ?

Hmm thanks. So the stock display panel is good enough? Some people recommended ips upgrade as very important. Also i am coming to the usa for the first time so don't know much about taxes. Any rough idea how much would the 1300$ config be after tax?

I don't have the TN panel but from what I heard it's "good enough". If you can fit the IPS panel in your budget, it's definitely a worthwhile upgrade. Tax will depend on your city.

Thanks. I am pretty much set on the np8651 if I can get it in my budget of around 1300. Anything more expensive and I will have no option other than np7338. Hopefully the 860m would be good enough to run witcher 3 and dragon age on reasonably good settings.

@ldkv if you are using Windows 8/8.1 you can setup the fingerprint reader by typing Sign-in options in the start screen. There you will have the option for fingerprint log-in.

Transiting from an IPS panel on the NP7338 to a TN panel on this NP8651, I don't see any problem using the TN panel. Of course the IPS is definitely better, but the TN panel is not really that bad though.

@myx: that is where I check to see if the fingerprint working, and I could not find it there :( Should I try reinstalling Windows ?

I just had to order 2133MHz Ripjaws first in order to test it to the max.

The egis sensor is there so that you can login on websites, pay, paste passwords, sensitive datas, with just your fingerprint, logging using your fingerprint isn't written in the characteristics page over at the egis website page.

Regarding people asking about the b156htn03.6, this is my sole opinion, but i've found the screen very disappointing, if you can upgrade to an IPS LG/AUO you won't regret it, the image quality difference is just HUGE. the colors representation is very cold, the viewing angle are by far the worst i've seen on modern TN panels compared to my previous AUO matte TN screen on the GT60 for instance. Really change your screen if you can afford it.

Finally, for people creating/testing a custom BIOS, thank you and... thank you :) ! I have a question however can one undervolt his 4710HQ using the bios or this type of CPU forbids bios tweaking ? I know nvidia cards can be bios tweaked of course, but i think the 980M run so cool and is actually, really powerful, that I'm more focusing on the CPU temps/performance )

How could you do that (login on website, paste pw etc.) ? According to the user manual you can only login to Windows with it. Actually my current P650SE is my 2nd one (as I returned the first one), and I could login into Windows with the fingerprint just fine. After that I did not format my SSD and used the same Windows for my second P650SE, and this time it could not detected the sign in option using the fingerprint. Guess I really have to reinstall Windows sigh.

That's great! No worries about the OS either. I've got a USB copy with me to use which should be sweet!
    Thanks for the reassurance!

+300 isn't fit for Metro Redux. Graphical artifacts strike back. Very strange how some games are seemingly more impacted with artifacts than others. I just want to find one single set of clocks to run on all games without worry.

    FPS: 84.2
    Score: 2121
    Min FPS: 21.0
    Max FPS: 179.2

Depends on driver version's being used. I am using 344.75.

I still have to dive into the CPU settings, but for the time being it seems the new beta of Throttlestop will be a MAJOR overhaul giving access to all 6 of the voltages, double of what the current beta can access.

Have you tried to change your login-password once ? Maybe that could help.
