    Thanks for making this thread!

I'm looking to get back into PC gaming after several years on the console side, and I'm trying to figure out these new Clevo models.

It looks like Sager is selling its new NP8658 built off of the P650RG (per Xotic PC: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8658-clevo-p650rg-p-8654.html), but I don't see the P650RG anywhere on Clevo's website ( http://www.clevo.com.tw/clevo_prodetail.asp?id=806&lang=en). The specs user moviemarketing listed for the SG seem to match the 8658 though.

Xotic PC also says that the 8657 is built off of the P650RE3 ( http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8657s-clevo-p650re3-p-8678.html), but user jaybee only mentioned that he thought the P650RG needed to be fixed in the thread title.

Per Xotic, the dimensions of the 2 Clevos differs only in height (P650RE3 is .98", P650RG is 1.13"). I'm also seeing P650RG on other websites when I google it so I'm having trouble figuring things out. Can anyone clear the difference up between the P650RG and SG? Is Sager's new NP8658 actually built from the P650SG?

Any insight would be really helpful. Thank you!

edit: I mis-read jaybee's post, and thought he said the thread title should've been SG instead of RG..

@Allan23 Yes, Sager NP8658 is the P650RG, and NP8657 is the P650RE3. The P650SG is the older Haswell version (max 32GB DDR3 RAM) of the P650RG, which uses Skylake processor (max 64GB DDR4 RAM)

So far I've only seen P650RE6 for sale in Europe and Asia, so perhaps Sager will use a different model number for this one if/when they release it.

According to Power Notebooks and XoticPC, we may need to wait a while before P650RE6 is available in the US:

I've noticed that Clevo hasn't updated their site with all the newer models as of yet. Hopefully we will see that updated shortly, as they only have the skylake versions of the P75x and P77x models up now (since they were released earlier, I'm assuming). But these models should be shipping out very soon it looks like.

Hey guys, so I'm looking at getting the Sager NP8658-S. Swapping it for my Aorus X5 becuase it just looks too damn fancy.
I'm not bothered about sound quality because I'll either be using a headset or speakers, but I was wondering about heating issues as I don't usually use a laptop cooler or anything.
Another thing I was wondering about is the upgradability of the laptop? As Clevo is a barebones case, am I going to be able to upgrade it easily? Not too much of a problem if not as I think it's relatively future proof as it is, just a happy thought :)

    Cheers

They had to redo the whole thing because Intel was changing their roadmaps all the time...that's why we got that "1000" units batch of P6xxSx-A with Broadwell CPU before these Skylake models hit, as the original plan was Broadwell all the way.

There weren't that many models with broadwell. Sager had some that shipped out briefly in that window between haswell and skylake models.

The 8658-s has dual fans so the cooling is fairly good on it. Not gonna be quite as slick as the Aorus, however likely it would run cooler as it has a thicker frame, Aorus can tend to run a little hotter. The best part about sager/clevo is the upgradeability of the machines. They are very simple to open up and get at the main components you need.

HTwingnut has a great review of the 8652, which is essentially the same as the 8658, with haswell instead of skylake. http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...l-impressions-and-review-by-htwingnut.767349/

    Thanks @Larry@LPC-Digital !

Can you clarify which photo is which model? They look so similar, it's hard to tell, but P650RG should be a little bulkier.

I agree it looks cool :). I haven't looked into it but I'm guessing an mxm slot takes a decent amount more space than soldering it right?

yep, thats correct and exactly the reason why manufacturers are going the soldered route, since most customers aim for thin gaming machines...

Anyone know if all three models are compatible with HDMI 2.0a? I've seen conflicting info on the reseller websites.

the ZMs were also said to be 1.4a,but users already successfully ran external displays at 4K60, so yeah....2.0 after all

Probably worth noting that NV cards could push 4K60 on 1.4a by defaulting to 4/2/0 colour mode. They were also helped by being directly connected to the NV GPU whereas the regular P650RE/RG are still Optimus (Intel GPU connected).

Which brings me to: Is is worth listing the G-Sync models separately?

My understanding from Prema is that the G-Sync models will use a mux chip ("Gear Display"..shiny) and would therefore running a different motherboard to the regular P650 Optimus versions.
Could clear up some confusion as some may get the impression that they can put a G-Sync display into a regular P650RG later on.

The first post may need some other tweaks. The P650RG description implies that all RG models are G-Sync which they aren't, as well as implying that all screen models are available.

The "Gear Display" switch is in all versions AFAIK. The DP and HDMI are directly connected to the Nvidia GPU, the internal panel can be switched between iGPU and dGPU.

The official specification of the P6xxRx models does not specifically say that the HDMI output is v2.0, however it does confirm HDMI 2.0 4K60Hz support.

The latter. These do not use desktop CPUs.

They kept that to their CMS236 chipset along with PCI-E raid because, well, that's Intel really.

The spec sheet in OP lists Optimus. If you think about it, it's not possible to have the MUX chip available and active on all motherboards as the entire purpose was to have the NV GPU communicate directly with the display TCon when required.

I'm working off the Metabox list (OZ reseller which lists the P670RG and P670RG-G). Most notably, they're listed as separate models and not an upgrade option. The P670RG-G is also not available with a i7-6820HK option which would imply (to me) that the motherboard is at least different enough that they aren't entirely interchangeable between G-Sync and non-G-sync.

The 4K60hz spec doesn't refer to HDMI. It's more likely referring to the internal LCD or the mini DisplayPorts. The same spec was listed on the older P650SE/SG as well.

They're BGA (soldered). I'm assuming that each reseller/builder has to order sufficient quantities of both motherboards, pre-built directly from Clevo.

When someone picks the CPU upgrade, in reality the entire motherboard is being changed.

Yes this is true, but if you have a design for one you have a design for the other pretty much. As for the exact electrical setup of each type it may take some time and analysis to be 100% sure.

Has there been any rumor about the P650RE6 actually being released in the US at some point? It's the only thing preventing me from pulling the trigger on the P650RE3 :)

Definitley MUX in all versions, GSync or no GSync - I'm refering to spec sheets and data which isn't publically available which expands on the spec sheet in the OP. The 4K60Hz also definitely refers to the external HDMI output, it's listed in the white paper that I have for the model :)

Just to confirm this, it is HDMI 2.0 :)

So since this does have MUX , is the battery life rating of 180 minutes using the dGPU or iGPU?

That's what I was thinking as well since all of the other dGPU based systems like the P870DM is also rated at 180 minutes, although they have bigger batteries.

So I'm guessing we'd get around 5-6 hours then on the iGPU. That's pretty good for what it is.
