Yes, I know. But it's only 640 cores, 128-bit mem bus, etc. 780Ms and 980Ms have 2.5x its core count and put out a ridiculous amount more heat, and we both know 980Ms are better for OCing once you add extra VRMs to them (which nVidia "conveniently" left out). Look at 970Ms for the supreme OCing that people did on P650SEs and stuff =D

Not that much better, it only helped for me at the extreme end where it made that 960M look like it was using the same power as a pocket calculator.

well now it all makes sense: 980M with less power phases, nvidia trying to block overclocking... all in favor of the 980 *tse*

    Hehehe.

Oh, well, haters gonna hate when they see my 860M (also an OCed 960M, because it runs at 1.3 GHz) running GTA V at very high settings while sipping power, or Witcher 3 at high settings. Also, the advantage of having a small, high-res screen: you don't need any much more anti-aliasing than FXAA, or at most MSAA x2, because pixel density outweighs any benefits of higher AA settings.

Hell, I can crank out 1.5 hours of battery life while playing TW3 unplugged.

Not really, the only thing it did was stop the card tripping as it approached 1.5ghz core clocks and shutting the system down.

yup, thats exactly what mine does once i reach my power limit clocks. there are no artifacts or the like, it just shuts down / black screens. thermal headroom is totall given, seeing at im having trouble getting my card to 75C :p so im betting it would have more oc potential with additional power phases...

My understanding is that for someone like me it'd keep daily OCs better without tripping, since the VRMs are what usually gave up first.

The 860M/960M are excellent overclockers. As @octiceps said - you can take them to stock 870M levels. And I haven't had an OC crash on my 860M yet (except on TW3 - but that crashes on all OCed GPUs.

All cards are different, if your cards trip with an overclock then it should help resolve it. It may have been my vrms were good samples anyway.

That or your environment is different, maybe. Hotter ambients translate to hotter parts; and we know that the core can be well under 80c when things trip (as both Jaybee and Mr. Fox have discovered). I wholeheartedly believe that those extra VRMs would help me for far smaller OCs =D.

Well the main thing is to first decide what to plan for. If the mobile 980s in MXM format would be the better fit for me, or if the 980Ms are. If the 980Ms are the better choice, I'll be working out a way to get a pair with those VRMs on them. If the mobile 980s are, then hopefully they won't need extra VRMs (which is what we'll be waiting to see).

What about you? Are you ever going back to a monster like a P570WM? Or is your eGPU GS30 working out for you?

Well, if I could, I would buy an entire data centre full of Titan Xs and run everything at literally max speed. I could run games at 19200 x 12000 at max settings. That would be sweet. But my electricity bill would be equally exorbitant.

P640RE is a little bit bigger (in height) than the 15" P650SE (0.98 inches / 24.9 mm), which has been available with 970M since last year.

The 13" Aorus X3 has also been on the market for some time. Significantly smaller than the Razer Blade, 330(W) x 263.5(D) x 22.9(H) mm / 12.99 in (W) x 10.47 in (D) x 0.90 in (H), and it includes full 6GB VRAM on the 970M.

Yup ^^^^ , will be at the end of the year. As with other models, you might see pre-orders from some companies pop up earlier. As always, please take the cue of when the larger companies put them up for sale in order to gauge the more accurate availability and shipping dates ;-)

hm, u sure its the right one though...? it sports a 15.6 inch screen, rather looks like the P650RE/P650RG series...

difficult to say, but similar / slightly improved battery life compared to the P6 Sx series with haswell would most probably be the case.

I didn't notice any mention of Thunderbolt/USB type-c in the list of specs. This is worrisome for me, as, like the poster above, I want to use an eGPU as well. I hope this will be included in the final build. If not I'll end up stuck with Alienware, sadly.

For a thin/light laptop with Thunderbolt the MSI GS60 may be viable. It has a 3.1 "super port" as they market it. I'm guessing it's TB3 but stuck in licensing hell until Intel sorts it out.

It would seem silly for the P640RE to lack a TB3 port. I can understand the P650 being an established system and having to re-tool manufacturing. But in this case it's a whole new chassis targetted at Skylake. You'd think it would've made the cut.

I guess we'll have to wait until somebody actually sees one.

Damn, that's a deal breaker for me, this laptop is a no-buy.

This is incredibly disappointing, for this laptop to come so close only to fall flat by missing such an important must-have feature. This should be standard across all their models, it's too important to be missing on any of them.
