Thanks for the reply any rough idea of when you will be stocking the P640RE or what sort of price is will come in at?
-
take a look at the pricing difference between their P506 and P706, which are their 15 and 17 inch brothers of this 14 inch machine. deduct that pricing difference from the 15 incher and u should get the ballpark right
just make sure to always compare identical configurations, though!

Hello! First time poster.
Looking at the clevo website http://www.clevo.com.tw/clevo_prodetail.asp?id=895&lang=en they have upgrades for the CPU and the Display (to 1440p).
So far I've seen mythlogic, sager and xotic have the p640re on their sites but without these upgrades.
Do you think these upgrades would show up soon? -
its probably best to ask a vendor directly if they have any info on that. its already happened that some "official" clevo upgrades got basically cancelled due ro thermal issues and/or bad availability from the manufacturer. if thats not the case, they could then at least give u a ballpark of availability
ps: those would indeed be pretty sweet upgrades to have

Sager are not offering those options at the moment. On the first run at least they obviously feel like the vast majority will go for the stock configuration. It does make sense for most people I think.

How is the trackpad on these? i read pretty bad reviews on the MSI one, and this is at a way more cost effective price.

I have been looking at the sager website and messing with build options. do you guys know if there is any reason they are not offering a 1tb sata3 mechanical drive and only a 500gb? Is there a hardware constraint or do they feel that 500gb is enough? I only ask because I have a new 1tb 2.5 that I was thinking about putting into it and wanted to b sure.
thanks -
the only thing i could think of would be z-height, thus if the machine would only support 1x7mm thick 2.5" drive vs. 9.5mm. but id think even 9.5mm shouldnt be a problem

Really interested in hearing about the fan profiles.

They are not offering them either due to stock levels or lack of demand considering how cheap the 500GB SSDs are.

I just took a first-hand look at the P640RE, alias the Aftershock S-14. It is honestly a beautiful machine. The palmrests are fully aluminium, as is the lid and most of the body. The laptop isn't much bigger or thicker than a 13" MacBook Pro (non-Retina), but the sheer power inside this notebook compared to the MacBook is astonishing. The machine looks lithe, clean and stealthy, as well as professional. I would love to replace my (already) rather dated-looking W230SS with a plastic chassis.
I didn't have enough time to test any of my apps or games (preferably X-Plane 10 for an all-round benchmark) to get some preliminary temperature and performance scores. However, the Windows UI is smooth and completely fluid, as is expected of any new computer. The screen is clear and bright - colour reproduction is fairly accurate, too. Unfortunately, the display machine in question was running Windows 10, which rather ruins the experience. I've always said skeuomorphic UI enhances the clarity of any given screen, and I would rather see Windows 7 + Aero on this.
The keyboard is nearly identical to the W230SS keyboard, which is a good thing - the keys have a solid, almost mechanical feel (not soft and spongy); they exhibit a nice 'clack' which isn't too loud. It's overall a very good keyboard for extended periods of typing, as well as gaming. The trackpad is much improved over the W230SS, though I didn't test this too much since the display unit had a mouse plugged in.
I probably won't get this now, though. I prefer to save some money and wait for the Pascal refresh (and maybe a 1440p screen option) which would probably be even more powerful, as well as (hopefully) an improved battery and maybe a slightly less-cluttered motherboard.
The P640RE is the new W230SS, i.e. a benchmark for portable, thinner and smaller high-performance laptops for road warriors, pilots and students who need laptops but are avid gamers. All other thin-and-light-but-performance laptops ought to be compared to this.
Razer Blade? Bah, pile of throttling, overheating, overpriced crap.
That's it for a very rough, preliminary review. I hope @HTWingNut, @Matrix Leader or @Mr. Fox gets a peek at this minuscule bomb that packs a lot of power for its size and give it a good dressing-down (don't compare it to the P870DM, though, guys - that's another monster altogether).Last edited: Dec 14, 2015 -
i could also imagine @Prema being interested in this one, hes always been a fan of the W230 series

Only things stopping me from getting this is the 3hr battery life... and the money :X

Even if it hasn't been confirmed, the battery has a (confirmed) capacity of 45 Whr. At typical power usage, of about 12 W (Web browsing, typing documents, coding and checking mail), comes up to about 3 hrs and 45 mins. The best you can get at about 10 W, is 4 and a half hours.
You can completely forget about having any inkling of battery life under heavy load - the CPU uses about 45 W under full load, and the GPU uses about 70 W (perhaps more). That gives you less than half an hour of battery life.gregtheo likes this. -
Not sure if this has been asked but will there be G-sync available with this laptop.

You can get it on an external screen but not on the internal no.

Hey guys, my finger is on the Checkout button on Xotic PC. Just waiting on a review by HTWingNut or someone else before I buy. This laptop is just what I wanted since my MSI FX420, over 3 years ago.

Any UK retailers selling this yet?
-
Yup, our European website mysn.de has it listed now, will follow shortly on mysn.co.uk in a couple of days. Stock isn't arriving until after Christmas (same with Sager etc) so the first units are unlikely to start shipping to customers until early January.

I really hope this can be the 14" laptop that doesn't throttle. Instant buy if it is.
-
so youre gonna buy the laptop instantly if it throttles?
jokes aside, with a few tweaks here and there u can pretty much make any clevo machine out there NOT throttle and live up to its full potentialIonising_Radiation likes this. -

They should perform as you expect stock, it's just if you want to go beyond that there is always room for fun

This is my first time buying a premium laptop so forgive me for a stupid question.
If I buy a laptop that does not have an OS, is there any way to get the control center programs back when I load a fresh OS?
I suppose there must be a way as most users would want to be able to control fan speeds, brightness, ect.
Thanks! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You should be able to at least get the drivers from your reseller if not then the sager/clevo sites will host them.

Seems like Eurocom is offering it now at the same price as the P650SE (CAD-wise anyways).

Doesn't mention the screen type though. -
it states that:
"Battery life : 290 minutes (with UMA mode, 45WH Battery)"
However, when referring to the different redistributor/branders, it was 3 hours (i.e. Aftershock S14) on their pages...Last edited: Dec 19, 2015 -
I guess all these numbers on paper won't matter much when people start doing real-world tests on them, right?
-
I'd be quite interested in how well the mini-display port setup with direct Nvidia GPU access works with Linux, any laptops with a similar setup that handle Linux fine?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It should just run through like a standard card, it's more likely to be fine than optimus paths through the IGP.
-
@Meaker
How long is the P640RE going to stay on sale at powernotebooks? Just wondering because if I do buy one it will probably be mid January -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I see very little chance of the model being phased out that quickly
Don't worry on that sort of time frame.
-
basically, thats the runtime u get when u switch off all network adapters, force cpu & gpu to idle clocks, dim the display to minimum brightness, dont let any programs/services run in the background and just sit there on the desktop on idle with ur hardware rolling its thumbs

Just wasting fuel (or electricity in our laptop's case), and not doing anything.

good analogy!

Has anyone gotten a unit for review?
-
Hmm. How's the Windows 7 support for this laptop (and other Clevos using Skylake)?
To my best understanding, Aftershock mentioned that these new models have no support for Windows 7; recommended using at least Windows 8 with them. -
Anyone with a review for this laptop? Do you think this is worth getting or should people wait for Pascal?
-
I will post a review as soon as I can, but I don't receive mine until around Jan 1st.
Excited though. I've been waiting a couple years for the perfect laptop to come out. I think this is it for me. Before it was always, "well I'll wait for broadwell, oh now I might as well wait for sky lake," and so on. I think sky lake and the current 970m will tAke me anywhere I need to go for the next several years. I only do occasional gaming and I'm fine toning down the textures for the absolute brand newest games. I usually only play dota anyway.
If I wait for pascal, then I'm sure there will be something else to wait for by the time they refresh this laptop with it. And this seems to be the best 14" laptop capable of gaming on the market.
Will post review once I get my unit. Around Jan 1. Cheers
