Man, that looks beautiful. I'm assuming you resellers have had these on hand for awhile now. Have any of you done a video overview or anything similar for these yet?

 

Clevo did a great job listening to feedback and making improvements on these new systems.

 

We've had them for about a week. We should be releasing an overview of them soon.

The Onkyo speakers are pretty nice, as is the back-lit keyboard.

 

Would you say the Onkyo speakers are a pretty big improvement over the older Sager/Clevo speakers?

 

Yes, the Onkyo speakers are a huge improvement over previous speaker systems.

 

I've had one of these preordered for about a month and I'm very excited for it. Wondering if I should hold out for an Ivy Bridge processor or not though...

 

Patiently waiting for Hutsady to contact me about my pre- order. Gives me some to make up my mind on a few options.

I can't see backlit keyboard option for NP9170 on any of custom builders sites... It only shows up on NP9270 models. Can someone shred some light on this please?

 

Its not an option, The P150EM/P170EM just come with it =)

 

Is P170EM as loud as P150EM? 15" seems to be more than 50dB under load which way too much for me.

Standard production time for us due to all the QA we do, and hand game testing (Yes we game on every laptop before we send it out for at least a hour or two), you are looking at sometime next week.

 

Why you haven't matte (anti-glare) display on this amazing model?

 

We are getting a shipment of B173HW01 V4's and V5's this week and we just want to inspect them before we put them up so we know how many we have =) So soon.

Hey mythlogic, how's the P170EM sound compared to the jet engine that the P150EM is?

Check it out A little lower.. approx 3 -4 dB at it's highest workload (as being stated that is)

Heres the rig I'll be getting, Ryan was kind enough to point out some issues with the Chimei display. Does anyone else have any info. about the quality of the display?

Yea I don't know where they are getting "Jet Engine" from these, they are the same heatsinks and fan's as the P150HM (The CPU heatsink is a little different) but its really the same, this just screams either mis-installed heatsink or bad EC on the thing.

 

What are you guys talking about?!?! I'm scared now...

 

The people who said it was loud in the review may have had a heatsink that wasn't making good contact with the chip because they may have installed it improperly OR they were not using a final production unit that had early firmware in it.

Overall we haven't seen the same issue (and neither have other companies) so I wouldn't be too concerned at all

 

Does anyone else agree with Ryan, or have any additional info. about this??

 

I am also interested in knowing the answer to this, cause it does cost a bit more. What are some positive specs about this screen over the others?


Im thinking about getting my computer without the optical bay, just for maybe more room in the machine, less weight and " breathing" space( if that does exist..)

Do you guys tihnk i should get the second Hd installed in its spot or just in the other hd spot?

What, exactly, is the problem with the display?
From the 2 units we had for our testing and review we didn't notice any issues with the Matte or Glossy that were equipped in ours.

 

I looking to buy 17" too, and obviously, there is something wrong going on with the screens. Read the posts above.

 

I'm guessing ,there is a problem with Chimei panels.

 

I'm unaware of the problem as well if at all there even is one. I was just posting because the information was presented to me and I wanted to know if anyone could provide any information on it.

Unnatural.. I can't find anything regarding the Chi Mei matte screen but I ordered it. If this is unanswered by the time I receive my comp I will post a review on it as well. I think often times reviews on screens are lacking.

I think the "grainy" issue that Ryan was talking about is pretty much a standard on matte screens. The Glossy screens are just that glossy and smooth where as the matte has a little grainy texture. My last Mac laptop was a matte screen and I noticed this but by no means did it deteriorate the quality of the screen for me. I really like matte screens over glossy for laptops. For desktops I prefer glossy.

Sounds to me like Ryan is pro gloss screens.

Any case I will review the Chi Mei if no one has by then. I find it a little sad that none of the resellers that use them in their computers are replying to this question.

You may have a point about the matte screen appearing grainy. I'm upgrading from a MacBook Pro also that had a matte screen. I hope nothing is wrong with the screen because I also want a matte screen for the laptop. I'm looking forward to your review.

 

I have had a Dell Precision M6600 for a few months, and have been lounging around in the Precision area for a while then.

People noticed an extreme amount of grain in the AG coating for the Chi Mei screens, specifically the model that is Chi Mei 173HGE. Due to numerous complaints about the lack of quality of the display, Dell Representatives came on the forum board and publicly announced that all Chi Mei panels have been removed from the Dell Precision M6600 production line - and current owners of the panel will be eligible for a new screen (AUO / LG).

This sparked a ton of interest back then, and I just noticed that the default Matte display in the P170EM uses the Chi Mei 173HGE(?) - resellers have to give me the panel ID specifically used for these models - which is quite a disappointment as I've witnessed the quality of the Chi-Mei panels and I was also granted a swap to an LG screen(flickered horribly, repaired and sold in Korea).

So I am curious as to how the screen fairs up, has no one actually complained about the Chi Mei display before? I find it odd as the Precision M6600 thread was filled with complaints about the Chi Mei.

 

I just ordered a NP9170 from powernotebooks.com, I'm going to change the Blu-ray reader to a Blu-ray writer. Does anyone know what brand/model would work with this laptop?

 

Any 12.7mm ODD will work...brand isn't important. You will just have to move the mounting bracket and faceplate from your standard Sager DVDRW to the Blu-ray drive.

Is this a comparison with the fans of a previous p170hm model or the guy is just showing 2 interenal fans?

 

This may sound crazy. I was hoping to utilize the mSata port, but I already have a sata 3 SSD in my old laptop that I plan to move to my P170. Would it work (or be sane for that matter) to put an mSata drive in there to then act as a cache for 2 HDD's (one in the optical port) if I use my SSD for the boot drive?

 

By looking at the orientation of the fans, I would say one is the GPU fan while the other is the CPU fan from the same barebone.

 

Yes one is CPU one is GPU. And this is the EM. Notice the full numeric keyboard. on the HM the period key was at the top. Not to mention it is backlit.

Also, Ryan. Thanks for making the Chi Mei post more clear. I ordered my P170EM with that screen so I should be able to post a current review on the screen by the end of next weekend

 

I also ordered the matte screen and will also be giving my review once I recieve my 170EM
