Yeah the audio isn't great I tryed messing with the soundblaster settings which helped a little bit. As far as the fan noise its pretty minimal when you are just browsing the web like an other nice laptop out on the market, but when you start gaming or benchmarking it jumps up a lot of dBa. I'll try to post a picture of mine soon.

First 24 hours with this machine was spent installing Windows, finding correct Windows 7 drivers. All working now though.
Currently downloading majority of my games. So not had chance to game just yet.

First impressions is that its a very powerful machine.
Keyboard will take some getting used to. The FN and \ Keys are in different positions than what I'm used to.

As Derek states above, although the laptop is not silent, it's pretty quiet, considering the hardware. There is a small flow of air constantly being outputted.

This thing is a dust magnet. Especially in the speaker grill!

Audio could be better, but lets face it, I never bought it to listen to my iTunes, did I.

Touchpad isn't as nice as I thought it'd be either. Gestures aren't the best, not as smooth as macbook or vaio, but again, won't be using that alot.

Currently looking at adding another SSD and some decent RAM.

Might write a big review shortly, if my one year old decides to sleep at all today :)

ATI hw seems to be pretty decent, but their catalyst drivers were just plain under par v. nVidia IME. nVidia just has the entire package hw plus usually good drivers and if not generally quick fixes. If you're doing an CL or anything though the consumer ATI parts are more capable than the consumer nVidia parts.

Beyond TBH, I haven't used it much for gaming. [EDIT] I've been at home recently, so have access to my desktop, and it's been warm enough here that it's uncomfortable to have parked in your lap outside... [/EDIT]

Can anyone recommend a cooler? Something to too terribly huge by preference, as I'd like to be able to use it outdoors and/or in non-ACed areas. (I briefly looked at some years ago when I bought the GT725, but ended up never buying one..)

I'm planning on buying the Sager np8250-s from xoticpc, and I realize it says that if I buy windows 8 i get the CDs with it. How hard would it be to to clean install and move windows 8 from the default drive to an 120gb msata I already own? Is it possible? How hard will it be for me to find all the drivers thereafter? Thanks!

Is the 8250 still better than the 8230 if I plan on just sticking with the 770. I noticed that the 8230 is slightly smaller and lighter which I like but what else does the 8350 have over the 30? Thanks

The 8250 will also come with a backlit keyboard and a second hard drive bay which fits 7mm drives like SSD's.

...and a number of WD Blue(1TB, 5400RPM, 7mm c. $120), Seagate Momentus Slims(relatively newish 7mm seem to go to 500GB ATM), and some Hitachi drives(up to 500GB ATM 7mm) including some 7200RPMers... all MUCH more cost effective than SSDs/msatas

dunno if Sager/resellers are pushing SSDs for $$$ or for other considerations, e.g. heat/power though... I'll find out as soon as I can find someone who actually has that WD 1TB unless I give up and go with the Hitachi 500GB 7200RPM...

Hey, Shot a few replies out on this one so not sure if one was yours or not, if it was sent overnight then I haven't quite got to those emails yet. Sager accidentally sent out incorrect instructions. Redeem it through Steam instead and it should work.

It's actually pretty simple and you are correct those disks will be sent with the system when you customize the configuration with it. Just put that SSD in the open 7mm bay (might be a good idea to disconnect the mechanical HDD while installing to the SSD so you don't accidentally install to it or risk messing up the MBR), and install Windows like you normally would. Reconnect the mechanical for your storage needs and you're good to go.

Decided on going with the 8250 over the 8230 because of the ability to upgrade it down the road. I'm about to pull the trigger and just want people's opinions on my build. Is the wireless a good upgrade? Lastly, best price I could find was with Xotic PC, but do they have a NBR discount?

    Hey there,

The thing I'd recommend the most to change is the HDD being the 1tb 5400 RPM drive. Very slow drive and I'd recommend not going that route unless you plan on installing your own SSD down the road. Wireless upgrade is definitely a good choice if you don't need bluetooth. If you do I can personally recommend the 6235, card I use every day and it works quite well for me.

As for pricing. we can't discuss discounts per forum rules but if you wanted to get in touch with me via PM or email (click my name for the email option) if you haven't worked with anybody here yet, I'd be glad to help. If you're already working with an advisor, just shoot them an email and they'll be able to help you out.

What's the model number for the 1TB 5400RPM drive?

Brand will vary depending on what they have on hand, but the part that you're concerned with is that it's a 5400 RPM drive. They're about as slow as you'll see available anymore and not recommended for an OS drive. If you're not concerned with load/boot times, you'll be fine with the drive, but even going with a 7200 RPM, short of moving up to an SSD, will provide a pretty significant boost in performance.

I'm going with a m5m mSSD as well that I found for a decent price though Newegg hence the 1TB will just be for storage. I talked to Roland through your website and he stated that you guys don't give the NBR discount anymore but I'm going with a secure checkout so I can get the 3% cash back. Put in my order a couple hours ago, hoping to get the instructions on how to send the check tonight or tomorrow so I can get the ball rolling. My 1st gen Envy 14 really is on it's last leg so I hope it can hold out till my 8250 comes in the mail.

I got my P150SM on Saturday and returning it back to the supplier today.

Performance with the 780m ist just wow but the sound...

OMG i need the book to play in bed while my wife sleeps beside me.. Or trys to.. Just playing World of Warcraft with vsync on the fan so f.. loud.
Maybe with Headset and loud game sounds this could be ok. But in a quiet room while someone wants to sleep beside.. no way.

I think after my old Asus g73jh i have to stick to the new g750 with 770m. The only book with an acceptable fan noise. But i think i will miss the power of the 780m :/

I game when my missus sleeps beside me, she sleeps through it :)
Presume I'm lucky in that sense.

Don't find the fans too loud. Playing FFXIV the other night and fans never went full blast at all.

My fan didnt went full blast either. But even the level before full blast is very very loud if you have a quiet room. The last level when trying furmark ist beyond everything i ever heared on a notebook.. No joke, it is the same noise level as my hairdryer..
As mentioned before, imo even the level before full blast which is ALWAYS on when playing any game is too loud for playing without headphones and boom-boom ingame sound..

Hello. so today i added the extra copper heatsinks on top of my gpu and cpu heat sinks. i did not add alot. i had 4 on top of my gpu and 3 on top of my cpu.. they did nothing. same degrees nothing more and nothing less . just wanted to share this with you.

so this is my second day using this awesome powerful laptop and so far so good. let me share some of the experience i had with it in the pass 2 days.

i was playing BF3 on high with 80-30 fps nothing less. i can play it on ultra with also around 80-30 fps but i don't want to put more load on both gpu and cpu... for heat playing bf3 gpu reach max of 75-76 and cpu 70-72
i played grid on ultra and it was very smooth i don't know how many fps but it was very smooth. heat while playing grid is 70-73c gpu and 68-71c cpu
i also played planet side 2 on ultra and high.. now this game is poorly programed and they are still optimizing it . my fps is around 50 and gets to 18 fps in big battles . but i don't feel that it is 18 fps! it plays smooth!! as for heat 84-85c.GPU

on idle gpu reaches 47-48c and cpu reaches 41-42. for some reason if i toggled full fan speed on idle heat can go down to 35 and if u stopped the full speed the idle heat will stick to 36-39c.

i only reached 83c once while playing bf3 but only because i forgot to toggle full speed fan. full speed fan really makes a big frekin deference in heat and that is truly awesome.
i didn't include a ssd card for my laptop but i am considering one right now. it will help make my system faster.
    that's for the laptop performance.....

the keyboard on the laptop feels awesome and feels good when typing. but the shift key is small and you need to get used to it.
today when i did put the laptop to sleep using the fn-f4 button it just freezed and i had to turn off power to restart the system.this was the first forced shut down i did.. i am a lil concerned about it because this is only a 2day new laptop.
the laptop sound is nothing special . i have a toshiba qosmio x305 and that laptop is a beast when it comes to sound. too bad the gpu is cooked and it keeps black screening and freezing. this is why i got this new sager.

4 screws and you can get to ur component . changing the fan or upgrading both cpu and gpu have never been easier. awesome thing xoticpc did that they installed the 16gp ram under they keybord and left the tow on the back of the laptop free for you to upgrade in the future.its way easier to reach the ram slots on the back of the laptop.

if any one have a question please ask and i will try to answer.

does any one know where to buy extra fans for the laptop. i want to buy them now and keep them encase any thing happens to my laptop fans. the first thing that broke in my first toshiba laptop was its fans. thanks.

I'm looking at the G750 with 770m too (like you, my old rig is a G73) - problem is, 17 inch laptops on your lap/on the bed are way too big.

I'm seriously starting to consider picking up one of the G55VW's on sale atm =\

You really cant see the difference unless you have a screen capable of displaying the 95% color gamut, which if you did then you'd know the difference :)
What the higher % means is that screen can display a higher % of the NTSC color gamut. The stock screens are typically 60% so the 95% can display much more colors.

Congrats on the build! I'm sure you'll be plenty impressed with the 780m

Same to you! Waiting is always said on here to be the hardest part. All worth it in the end.

So... that Haswell USB 3 bug. Do you think it would be possible to do an RMA to get the C2 chipset stepping (when it becomes available)?

Can anyone comment on the P157SM's wrist space?
I currently use a G73SW and find it very comfortable (17" laptop with tapered edge).

I have quite large hands and am a little concerned about wrist comfort. It hadn't dawned on me until today when I went to my local computer store. SOME 15" laptops were okay, others were horrid.
In fact, there was a Razer Blade on display (660m model) which was utterly awful. I'd die if I ordered one of those online and found that flaw.

Seriously considering the P177sm and P375sm models now, even though I did want to change to a 15" model to make playing games on the couch a more comfortable experience.
If any retailers / owners could share their thoughts, I'd be very appreciative (maybe even measure from bottom edge to the top of the [W] key? :)

I'm having trouble with Hotkey since yesterday, it keeps telling me that System needs to be restarted again. Tried uninstalling and installing and didn't change. Any idea ?

Edit : Ok, working with a previous version.

I just received my p8250/157sm yesterday and played abit on it. I am also a couch gamer and picked the 15" for the same reasons. I don't have measurements on hand as I am at work, but I can say the wrist room for me is fine (5'11" height if that helps). I do find the keys more cramped than I am used to. If I remember and no one else does I will measure from W to edge when I get home later today.

****Edit: The top of the "W" key is 7 inches from the edge of the bottom of the laptop.

Anyone know if I can get the backlit keyboard to go with my music? also have they released the software to turn off the touch pad?

Ive had the computer for about 2 weeks now and everything about it amazing. I do understand the normal complaints (i.e. sound) but I'm not to much of a stickler about it. overall im am extremely happy.

Was a tough last second decision to go with the 780m over the 8970m. I would have taken the performance hit if I knew the 8970m would run quieter/cooler - but the EOFY sale was about to end and I don't expect reviews on the 8970m until next week.

    ...Now the horrid wait begins.

Nice choice, you certainly won't be dissapointed with the 780m :)

I've been gaming a little more over the past few nights. Planetside 2, BF3, FFXIV ARR all run perfectly with the new drivers. Have to generally enable VSYNC as getting tearing above that.
Temps have settled a little bit, don't really go over 90degrees now, usually 82-88. When benching, they may hit 92 or so, nothing I consider major.

Will be chucking in an mSATA soon to take me upto 512gb SSD storage :)

    Hope you get it quickly!

Is the SM a new barebone, or the same as EM with different components?

New barebone. Mostly the same, as far as I'm aware. New socket for Haswell with other minor adjustments.
