Lower number of power phases, aluminium heatsink and lower rated PSU means it would be unwise to let that value be raised.

Aren't the power phases now in the Haswell DIE itself?

Well, seeing as I've never undervolted a CPU before, and also seeing what an effect it had on temps for the np7330 I decided to experiment with the 8250-S. [EDIT] I suppose that I should mention that I have a 7330 on the way, and wasn't really all that unhappy w/8250-S temps... [/EDIT]

Essentially I just did what wingnut did for his 7330, i.e. dropped dynamic & cache voltage by ~100mV, however I didn't lower the 3/4 core multis. (Using Intel Extreme Tuning Util 4.1)

I've only done a small amount of testing so far, 5m stress test & 15m stress test. In the 5m test CPU temps stabilized around 75C, while they stabilized ~80C running the 15m test which was run almost immediately after the 5m test. I could probably go lower on the voltages, but for now I'm just going to leave them as is.

Doing something like this too, but more conservatively i only lowered Cache,Processer and iGPU by about -38mV and upped the Cores x1 in Multis, but new Multis didn't get used due to TDP it seems, but i have to say i did have a Copper Heatsink for my CPU from the P170SM and i max out at 86 °C (hottest core) with 10mins of the XTU Stress test (it's Linpack i saw)

Sure sounds like it. Same screen as 8250 and otherwise specwise sounding identical. Might be bad news for us w/8250s as the difference MIGHT be they found HW bug in the original design and these are rev2(or whatever) boards, which would suck as it likely means that all we get to do is sit and stare at the 2nd msata w/warranty void sticker...

I heard a lot of horror stories about AMD cards with Enduro enabled. I wouldn't do it.

I just hate nvidia, never had luck with them in the past and can't justify paying extra for something that's long term unreliable (from my experience). The biggest problem with nvidia cards for me was high dpc latency. Most people never pay attention to it but it's totally unacceptable in my book. I'd rather have a 8970m with a broken enduro and hope that some day it will get fixed.
    just my 2 cents.

I've never had any problems with NVidia cards in my desktop rigs.

You can always buy a laptop with always-on AMD/NVIDIA GPUs (not tied with IGP). That way, you don't need to worry about Optimus/Enduro bugs.

Without Optimus/Enduro, battery life is going to suffer.

    Hi everyone-
I just bought this laptop from Xotic PC about 1 month ago. And now it won't boot. A green LED blinks twice on the front but no power. I read on this forum that a couple of people have had a similar issue. Issues from bad ram? Well I removed each stick and tried with each one individually... Still no go. I imagine at this point it must be a faulty motherboard.
Sucks as it was working perfectly just before I shut it down... I've never owned a Sager before and I've never ever had a motherboard fail on me before in the 20 something years I've owned computers. Makes me concerned that I bought this computer for work.
I'm going to send an RMA to XoticPC, but I wanted to know if any more people have had this issue and if anyone can think of any more solutions?
As I stated, I use this computer for work, so the longer I don't have this computer running the tier my situation gets. :(

    I'm using:
    i7-4700MQ
    Windows 8
    16 gigs ram
256GB Crucial M4 mSATA SSD for OS
    Primary Hard Drive 750GB 7200RPM

Sorry to hear about the issues Andwew. RAM would be my first guess too but it sounds like you've tried that. Could be CPU or GPU or motherboard as well. You can give our 24/7 phone tech support a call before sending it in, they may be able to get some ideas on how to fix that before sending it in. If they cant come up with any ideas sending it in to get look at can be done by opening a service ticket under the contact page on our site.

You missed the bit about the 2nd msata slot(under main hdd bay) being covered with a warranty void sticker? It currently doesn't work properly as mentioned earlier and hope was that a bios/sw patch to correct, but now I'm beginning to wonder....

Hello everyone, I got my clevo 157sm recently and I noticed one small problem with the chassis. Just above the keyboard below the power button the plastic is sticking out a little and when you press it, it will move a little. I am just wandering is this a nature of this laptop or mine is missing some screw or plastic holder in this place. Does anyone has the same situation?

Regarding this HW bug. I have a new Pollux 1613 (P157SM) and had heard about a problem with the second mSATA slot. I contacted Mythlogic and was told the problem was mostly(?) when trying to use the two mSATA drives in raid. Other than that it should work. Well when I tried to install a Crucial M4 256 in the bay the computer would not recognize it. Contacted Crucial support and after about 30 minutes of talking with them they gave me an RMA to send it back. Can anybody give any specifics as to what the "problems" are with this second mSATA bay? Any by the way, there was not one of the infamous "Void" stickers on the bay cover. HMMMMMMM.

It's identical other than the P4 (2nd mSATA port) is now supported verses the 8250 model. They changed the model numbers to avoid confusion.

Exactly right! They finally got that second Msata working and it just makes more sense paperwork wise to have it listed as a different model number/configuration possibilities for future support.

Damn, so that means it was a hardware bug? Or did you mean that they got it fixed (non-hardware problem), but to make RMAs and service support easier (due to different configurations with MSata, raid or non raid), they gave it a new model number? If it's the latter (and I really hope it is), is there new BIOS/EC firmwares coming out?

Hey guys, finally bought another 1 x 4GB ram for my P150SM and installed it bringing the total RAM size to 16GB. Still no luck, I encounter the random BSOD that I posted a few weeks back. Just to be really sure that it isn't a memory related issue, all RAMs have the same manufacturer/part numbers and have memtest86+'d for the whole night.

Also, I found out another strange thing. When the system reboots after the BSOD, I sometimes get a non-system disk error. Could this imply that my SSD has not been detected and the system is trying to boot from the hard drive? Like I said in my previous posts, the system is rock stable with an 8GB configuration but once I add additional RAMs this problem happens. I even managed to clock in a full week's uptime of gaming + programming without having any crashes whatsoever.

Btw, the SSD is still placed under the HDD bay. I still have to find a way to removed the stripped screw head from the main compartment slot :)

It looks as though it was a hardware fix to enable the 2nd Msata, got updated to that this morning. So the 8250 won't be possible to have the 2nd Msata enabled where as the 8255 will come with it working by default, for example.

From what I gathered it just led to general system instability with that bay filled...

    @Derek
well hell! So CONVENIENT of them to cough up a fix a couple weeks outside of my return window o.w. I'd just return the 8250-s(minus my adds) and re-order the fixed version. Also I STRONGLY suspect that they are playing games with the model #s. Had they left it the original borken model # they probably would have been obliged to offer mb swaps under warranty. Not very customer friendly, but I guess that I can see their point to a degree, at least from their side....

Well they are out to get you, they told me so.

JK, but you could try getting a hold of your reseller. I'm pretty sure you bought from us if I remember correct but can't seem to find your order information in my records. It's possible they may be willing to help out if you contact them, just won't know until you try. If it is our team, shoot an RMA request form in and explain the situation. They may be able to appeal to Sager on your behalf.

Well, I PMed you my order details. My shipment is still with UPS. Could you tell UPS to return the package to XoticPC and meanwhile have Sager build me a NP8255 while it's being returned to XoticPC? If so, please do that! If not, I would still like a NP8255, so please have UPS intercept the package. Please tell me the ETA if it's the latter..

    No extra charges, right?

    Oh you sneaky b*stard! :D

I just left them off the hook, as it's probably not worth the hassle for me as I'd have to buy another msata drive for that slot and TBH I'd probably only be interested in a max cap msata which IIRC would be c. $500, and I've got a 7330 on the way now too(need more portable, 8250 is still a bit too heavy/bulky but o.w. awesome so I'm keeping it to use when it won't have to move much in travel OR I need something with more thermal headroom) so I'll likely end up spending on msatas for that already...

(I also PMed Derek, but as above told him not to bother. Thanks again for the offer though Derek...)

I did receive your PM and having it looked into. Not able to discuss pricing in the open forums, but doing so will involve a UPS intercept and UPS will charge to do so. As soon as I hear back from our shipping team I'll shoot you an email with details.

It'd go back to Sager and there are also fees associated with that as UPS will then charge Sager return shipping fees which they won't want to cover because you decided you wanted a different model. As I said though, looking into the options for you, and I'll be able to provide an email to you once they're available so you know the exact costs for each option we have.

Well, I've decided against the 8255. Shipping fees add up quickly...

Unless my machine had a dead pixel, then it would have to be shipped back, right? If so, I wonder if I could get my 8250 upgraded to the 8255 haha.

Or, I can just hope my machine doesn't have those "warranty void if removed" stickers over the 2nd msata slot. :p

    Hey everyone-
Thanks for some of your suggestions, but the laptop is still busted. I reached out to xotic pc and I am trying to get an RMA and communication started with them.
Hopefully, we can find a solution soon and I'll report back what happened to this computer so none of you have to go through this bad situation.

    Thanks.

    Hey Guys,

First time posting on here, I got a Sager NP8250 as my first foray into gaming laptops and used this thread as one of my main resources when I was deciding which model to get. I went through XoticPC and have been nothing but thrilled so far. I got the sucker today, and am loving it, but I do have a question. I downloaded Speccy, and it looks like my Hard Drive is running around 58 C out of the box while I'm just surfing the web and downloading simple programs like iTunes. I was going to run one of the Total War games on it later to test it out some, but I wanted to know if that temperature is normal? I'm pretty new to this, I've always just used substandard machines to try to game in the past, and really don't know what a normal or acceptable temperature for the hard drive, or really any of the internal components might be. Give me a hint, is this kind of temperature normal? Thanks in advance for your help!

    -Daniel

Don't know... My desktop HDD is running at 38 degree Celsius, but it's housed in a pretty roomy case with a fan blowing over it. With the spacing in a laptop, I think that would be a normal-ish temperature, but kinda high... Actually, I don't think that's a good temperature at all xD

By the way, you got your machine today, correct? Could you remove the HDD and tell me if the 2nd MSata still has the "warranty void if removed" stickers?

Also, could you tell me the date when your XoticPC order went to Phase 3? Sager told me that my laptop was actually a NP8255, but XoticPC said that it's unlikely...

    It looks like this: [IMG]

    Thanks.

I just order a Clevo P150SM with Windows 8 Pro. Has anyone upgraded or replaced their screen with an IPS touch screen? Does anyone know if any other laptop 15.6" IPS panel will fit in the Clevo P150SM?

I'll try to check on that HDD for you when I get home. Mine actually never went into Phase 3. I was contacted by XoticPC for Phase 2 and decided to add on the rush order, two days later I went directly to Phase 4, with no notification of Phase 3 (although I suppose you can assume it was happening). Notified of Phase 4 on July 25, received the computer on July 30. Pretty solid build time, I think the rush charge was definitely worth it to me.

Also, just spoke to a rep from XoticPC who said that Sager has indicated that a HDD temp b/w 50-60 C is acceptable and should not damage the machine. I guess we'll have to see, seems a little hot but I'll take their word for it.

I see... I didn't pay for the rush build/ship. My order went into phase 2 on July 18, phase 3 on July 23, and phase 4 on July 26.

You also don't live in California, so when your order was in phase 4, it shipped out directly from Sager, so that means you might have the newer NP8255.

Mine was shipped out from Sager to XoticPC around July 23.

Also, could you check around the RAM slots (slots 1 and 2; not the ones behind keyboard) for a sticker that says something like 3.2A or 3.5A?

Have you tried snapping it back in?
If not it's pretty easy to remove that part and re-install it.

The only thing that I tried up to now was pressing it down. It has a bit of flexibility but wen I let it go, it's moving up to previous position.
Didn't try anything else for now. Don't want to lose warranty, but at the same time I don't want to sand it back to supplier because of something so small.
I'm assuming that in your laptop this part is not sticking out.
Would you know where I can find some information haw to fix it, if I decide to do it?

Basically you could follow this guide up to step 4:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...disable-touchpad-backlight-p157sm-np8250.html
Just remove the top panel and re-install it.

I'd really like to know the battery life as well with the 8970m, I need it for CAD use as well as gaming so it was recommend to go the amd route over my normal nvidia.

When it comes to undervolting the CPU I found out that running -100mV on GPU and -100mV Cache on my 4700 works fine for all what I've been doing on my laptop, gaming, benchmarks etc. But when I run the CPU Zlib benchmark in AIDA64 it will shutdown the laptop, even when I'm down to -40mV CPU. It seems to be a "good" indicator how far one can push the UV of the CPU and still being rocksolid.
