I placed my order for the Clevo N870HK1 (Sager NP6872) this morning and will include impressions of the unit when I receive it. I chose it over the NP6870 mainly because it was only $20 difference and the video card was a large upgrade from 1050 to 1050 Ti.
My purchased configuration is:
Display:
17.3” Full HD (1920 x 1080) Clear IPS Matte Display
CPU / Processor:
7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ (6M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)
Video & Graphics Card:
NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 1050Ti GPU with 4GB GDDR5 Video Memory Switchable GPU by NVIDIA® Optimus™ Technology
Thermal Compound:
IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU
Memory:
8GB DDR4 PC4 2400MHz (PC4 19200) Memory (1 x 8GB)
Primary Hard Disk Drive:
1 TB 5400 RPM SATA 6Gb/s Hard Drive
Wireless Network Card:
Intel® Dual Band Ultra Wireless - AC 8265 M.2 + Bluetooth 4.2 Combo
I will be installing a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB M.2 SSD drive when I receive it and using the 1 TB drive for storage. I will purchase more memory if I feel it's needed but I wanted to see how well it performs with just 8GB first.Last edited: Feb 8, 2017 -
I have the following configuration and would be happy to answer any questions providing they're not too technical (I am exactly as described above, needing to "use a larger laptop for productivity purposes but occasionally do some light gaming" and with only moderate computer knowledge):

- 17.3" Full HD IPS Matte Display (1920 x 1080) Pre-Order!
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 GPU with 4GB GDDR5 Video Memory / Optimus Technology
- Stock Standard Thermal Compound
- Windows® 10 Home 64-Bit Edition Preinstalled
- 16GB Dual Channel DDR4 SDRAM at 2400MHz - 2 X 8GB [+$70.00]

Thanks, it's really working out great so far. It's actually doing better at games than I figured, comfortably allowing me 1080p gaming but not getting into any crazy temperatures. The screen looks amazing and watching movies on it is a real treat. I've never had a screen where the blacks were actually black.
I've only just started setting up audio programs for recording but already it's handling everything very smoothly and without errors. -
has anyone tried out linux on this system ?
I was planning to get one, but I want to use the GPU for calculations in ubuntu/arch etc. -
-How are the thermals on the standard cooling paste?
-How much is the battery life on average? -
I can link some photos when work isn't so busy. But the build quality is super solid so far. The lid feels really sturdy, with very little, if almost no flex to it. It takes some effort to open it up, which I like. The keyboard feels secure and solid, with no give. I think the plug for the power brick feels a little dinky and exposed, makes me worried a little about bumping it into anything when it's plugged in. The whole thing seems to be made out of the same material, some kind of plastic I'm sure. It doesn't feel cheap to me, it feels very solid and functional. It's not pretty, but IMO it's not meant to be. It's not trying to be anything other than a big ol laptop.
I've been playing several games on 1080p/high-ultra settings (like Mafia 3, Star Citizen, ESO, and others) and the laptop never gets hot enough that it becomes uncomfortable or that I need to take it off my lap. I haven't meticulously monitored the temps of the CPU/GPU but the few times I checked while gaming the temps never seemed to go past 75c or thereabouts. I think the fact that it's only a regular 1050 helps with the temps.
I've had it off the power a couple times, just browsing the web at night and using streaming services and it easily reaches 3 hours of battery life.
All in all this system is really working out for me. -

Really well, in my opinion. It seems with that game the way it runs is more tied to server stability than anything else, but aside from some obvious hitches on that front there's been no real issues. It looks great, and it seems like the CPU/GPU combo holds up really well under all that number crunching.
All in all I'm honestly kind of surprised. This notebook comes off kinda frumpy and despite its huge size it seems kind of unimpressive on the outside, but it's a real workhorse on the inside and it handles everything I've thrown at it really well. There's some impressive guts stuffed into its thin shell. Two thumbs up. -
Good to hear the positive review. Also, how is the screen in terms of brightness, colour reproduction, viewing angles and stuff. And be sure to hook us up with the photos.

I received my laptop today. When I get home this evening I will do an un-boxing video and post pictures.
Are there any games people are interested in for performance impressions? -
And cheers mate! Congrats on the laptop. Eagerly waiting for your video and review.ImHere likes this. -

Performance in each chassis can still vary a bit so it's still nice to confirm and see.
-
Here are my initial impressions:
- Solid build quality.
- Going from a 15 inch to 17 inch laptop isn't very bad. 1080p is much easier on the eyes with a 17 inch screen.
- Screen is absolutely beautiful. It is very bright, colors are vibrant and blacks are black. Excellent viewing angles.
- Audio is average. Volume is decent, but there's not much life. It sounds a little tinny. Not exactly sure where the speakers are. I meant to look to see if they were underneath when I had the panel off. Sounds like they are coming out the ventilation. Headphone jack volume isn't that great.

Here is an unboxing and overview video I made. Sorry, I am not a video producer pro so nothing exciting.
Upcoming I will do a video on the internals and also take pictures of the screen and it's viewing angles. Then gaming experiences with temperatures after that. -
Could you please post the modell of the build in IPS-display?
Thanks! -
No Thunderbolt?
Thanks. -

Looking up the hardware I'd in the device manager details of the panel should identify it or a program like Hwinfo.
-
I was not able to see the panel in Device Manager or the HWInfo program you recommended.

I am installing The Witcher 3 now. I hope tonight I will have some results of how the system fares with temperatures, heat and gaming performance.
EDIT: It probably won't be tonight. It's been downloading all day and is only at 60% (my Internet speed is only at 15Mbps lol). Maybe tomorrow morning.Last edited: Feb 20, 2017 -

Would have been under the hardware ID information in device manager.

Is a review of a machine with that panel (note the response times are actually half what NBC report). -
I have been playing The Witcher 3 for about an hour right now. I am using Ultra settings on 1080p. Everything seems pretty smooth so far, though I did encounter a little choppiness in some areas. If you require 60FPS when playing bumping some settings down a little to compensate will help but this system can definitely run it.
As for temps, the fan was on the entire time playing, but not at full speed that I have heard it before. Most of the heat on the laptop seems to be contained to the keyboard. I feel little to none on other areas such as beneath the keyboard where you would rest palms and the touchpad. I wouldn't say it is extremely hot but it's enough to keep your hands warm on a cold winter night.
Here are temperatures while playing the game this past hour. I am using IC Diamond thermal paste.
-
Do you have an option to adjust the fan speed? It seems that you need the fan to be at full speed when playing, 88 deg C is a little too high
Last edited: Feb 20, 2017 -
Yes, you can manually set the fan to full speed. Here is temps after playing an hour when set at full speed. Be aware, that when set at full speed and due to the speaker quality you may want to consider external powered speakers because the fan noise can really drown out the game noise.
EDIT: I also ran the fan at 50% for awhile and the GPU temp was only 1 degree C higher.

Is the lid of the laptop made of aluminum or plastic? -
Did you try to undervolt the CPU?
-
As a side note, the battery has lasted nearly 4 hours for productivity with the screen on full brightness. It is not hot on the lap at all and the fan never kicked on. I will test battery life for gaming next. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's pretty amazing considering the range the chips can operate at from idle to full load these days
-
Hmm I can't seem to get the webcam working on this thing. I don't think the system even recognizes that it's in there.

I'm embarrassed to say, but yes.
Good to know though, that there's an actual switch for that. -

Noctilum pretty good temps there!
I have seen your videos and I'm considering the i5 1050ti combo.
Can you do a Prime95 test for see the cpu temps under high load with fans operating at 100%? That would be useful.
And how do you adjust the fan speed?
Thank you in advance and excuse my poor english -
Do you think that it works with Nvidia Optimus?
And, I have read the display is G-Sync capable (this laptop seems to use the same one http://laptopmedia.com/review/acer-predator-17-g5-793-review-hefty-but-solid-as-always/). Does this means we can enable G-Sync? -

A few rapid discharges (within reason) wont destroy the cell but yes gaming on it constantly will make it wear out faster.
-
Curious about your thoughts this is my system I just ordered.
XOTIC G57 Excalibur(Cleco N870HK1):
Extra's laptop come with:
1 x IC Diamond Thermal Compound CPU + GPU
17.3" FHD 16:9 "Matte Type" Anti-Glare Ultra Bright IPS Screen (1920x1080) (Don't see Ultra Bright on the site now)
Upgaded:
1 x 32GB (2x16GB) CORSAIR Vengeance DDR4 3000MHz Dual Channel Memory
250GB Samsung 960 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD
1 x 240GB Solid State Drive (SATA III 6GB/s)
Intel® Dual Band 8260-AC (2x2) 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.2
I've notice the chip set is not covered with a heat sink and plan on applying IC Diamond on it with a after market heat sink, I also plan on putting thermal padding in a couple areas to help with heat.
I do plan on lowering the voltage to the cpu also will be over clocking the gpu and if possible id like to overclock the ram.
I use this usually for design and office situations however I enjoy RTS and Turn Based strategy.Last edited: Mar 6, 2017 -

With the sale on the SSDs I can see why you split it, having a single larger drive is more ideal but it does cost a fair bit more.
-
I've got a serious update, I changed my entire order due to me finding out the heat pipe from the CPU to the fan was extremely long also the GPU heat pipe intersected the battery ever so slightly that said the chip set also had no coverage in terms of the heat sink.

Xotic G67 Raider
Only upgrages now are: 250GB Samsung 960 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD 250GB Samsung 850 EVO M.2 SSD Intel® Dual Band 8260-AC (2x2) 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.2
I plan on upgrading ram to 32gb 3000mhz at a later date but the cooling solution in this laptop was worth the price increase. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
What the heatsink looks like and how it performs is quite different.
