no TB3?
??Wh battery?
-
You need to give these new products a little bit of time, after they are listed, before the specifications can be confirmed from their website. They don't always list everything at the start, especially those which are factory options
TB3 - yes, same as with the N131 - Type-C with TB3 as factory option, so not all resellers will take this option.
36Wh, same as N131.
I was going to go for this option for my work laptop, but decided not to wait and have an N131 instead - they are very similar chassis.sicily428 likes this. -
is N140 using the same chassis as N130? According to this page, the only difference will be the screen:
https://slimbook.es/pro-ultrabook-13-aluminio
What is then the difference with N240 (apart from not having tb3)? Which one has a better cooling solution? (I am looking into a 14', cooling interest is because summer gets very warm here) -
Does anyone know if this model will be available with an IPS display in the future? I prefer an IPS display with a Matte finish.
I understand that the battery is small because of the 2.5" hard drive, but can a more powerful battery of the same size be used to replace the existing battery? If I get a Core i5 version of this then will the battery last a bit longer? -

I doubt you'll see upgrades to the battery capacity in this model unfortunately.
-
If there's an IPS display with a Matte finish available for the 14 inch then I would instantly buy it from you -

Right now just a 13" based on the N130WU but I hope to see more 14" models as time goes on. -
@clevo-extreme
Can you answer for some questions regarding to this model what you sell?
http://www.clevo-systems.com/product/clevo-n141wu-8th-bga-ddr4-intel-uhd-620-thunderbolt
What exact IPS panel it have?
Does it have fully functional Thunderbolt 3? Is it possible to hook up eGPU or charge it thru TB3? -
Schenker will offer N141WU with pretty good IPS panel Innolux N140HCE-EN1 with 99% sRGB (info in comments)
https://www.notebookcheck.com/Schen...t-Kaby-Lake-R-und-Thunderbolt-3.314072.0.html
You can find more info about that panel in this Asus review
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-ZenBook-UX3410UA-Notebook-Review.192282.0.html#toc-display
I see only few drawbacks in this laptop:
1) Not a "true" fully functional Thunderbolt 3, because it's not supporting charging. Also Schenker not confirmed DP video support (discussions in comments)
2) 36Wh battery
3) Small touchpad
Everything else looks very solid for this price and for many people can be great alternative for more expensive XPS 13, Lenovo T480, etc.9ac3 likes this. -
^I hope some of the US Clevo resellers do the same as Schenker by offering a good IPS display for this model.
-
Does Schenker do international shipping?
Btw if I replace the panel by myself then wouldn't I be giving up the brightness control setting? It's sth I've heard from someone.Last edited: Jul 7, 2018 -

In Europe I could recommend a couple of completely trustworthy suppoliers that you could purchase this panel from yourself, I'm sure that there are others in other regions where you could buy one from with lower shipping costs etc ;-)9ac3 likes this. -

System76 Galago Pro uses this Clevo chassis. Here's a brief review of it:
.
The screen looks quite good and appears to be of IPS quality. -
- for Europe I usually recomend RequireIT .co .uk . This is their EBay shop https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/ukscreenspecialists . I usually recommend them as they are a trusted supplier of panels and thel sell what they advertise, not cheaper versions or different models like a lot of companies and EBay shops do.
- for the US, there was a company in Florida that we purchased some sotck from many years ago - I can't remember their name but they were also reliable when we dealt with them. Will update if the names comes back to me!

@XMG can you clarify situation with Thunderbolt 3 functions?
I understand what it is not possible to charge laptop via TB3, but what about external monitors and eGPU? -

I should also note that the TB3 is a factory option - the Type-C port is always there but the TB3 is optional so you need to chek the laptop resellers website if their version has TB3 or just USB TPYE-C with 3.1 connection. -
If you need to switch between USB and DP modes, it means, what it will work only as DP port, and can't transfer data for USB Hub in monitor?
Very frustrating and complicated! They killing one of the huges selling point for me -

Pretty sure it is, the WVA version -

IPS panels can be very different, sometimes worse than good TN panel. -

Huge difference for identical chassis. -
This is very disappointing :/
Any hope for this to change ? -

12°C difference in stress test.
But 83°C in Tuxedo also not critical, so after repasting and fine tuning in XTU is must be possible to find optimal curve for best thermals/noise ratio.
Biggest flaws in this laptop for me is very small touchpad and TB3 without charging.
Otherwise great value for the price.9ac3 likes this. -
We do have chassis which support TB3 charging such as the Schenker VIA 14, but this isn't a Clevo chassis. It's up to each ODM to decide which TB3 features they want to include and this isn't something that can be changed at a later date - though resellers and SIs can request the function, ultimately it's not our decision.
The reason for the different noise levels is due to a number of reasons:
- Different people conducting each review and tests
- Different layout of results and different results run (for example, in the Tuxedo one they did only Prime + Furmark for the load test, for the Slim 14 they carried out thee tests individually and together)
- Different ambient temperature
- SPL testing at 15cm for fan noise is prone to being off-center axis which can easilly introduce a differential
The comment for the SLIM 14 is as follows:
"The fan runs even at low system load and gives a uniform noise of itself. Under load, the volume increases only slightly, so that when using the device, a continuous fan noise must be tolerated. However, this is not loud and is quickly drowned out by ambient noise."
The max load measurements were:
InfinityBook 31.0 dB (A)
Slim 14 33.4 dB (A)
Also note that the idle level is different - Tuxedo 30.0 vs Slim 14 28.7. The fans are clearly not ramping up in the InfinityBook, as noted by @vs40 the load temperature on the InfinityBook is substantially higher.
Finally, our internal tests of the SLIM 13 (N130) and SLIM 14 (N140) showed that under Prime+Furmark (so the same as the NBC load noise tests) the max level was higher in the N130 that in the N140. They are the same chassis, same fans, different screen size - so only the EC version (Tuxedo use the same as us) is different - and potentially the MB revision, but same CPU etc.
P.S. my work laptop is a SLIM13 (N130) and the fans only ever ramp up noticably when Kaspersky decides to have a hissy fit - or if I do batch exports from Lightroom when I'm not infront of my PC. Apart from that's it's basically dead silent all the time. Touchpad is small, but it's a small chassis and here's no room to fit a larger one in there. Plus, it has physical buttons separate to the touchpad which is why I went with this as my work laptop over other models which are all-in-one touchpad + buttons, where the whole touchpad moves.9ac3 likes this. -

Which uses more power, prime95 or windows background tasks when not at the machine? I'd go for windows

This model got very nice upgrade to Whiskey Lake CPU and charging option thru Thunderbolt

@XMG
Can you clarify, user still need to manually switch between different TB3 mods in BIOS like DP/USB/Charging or now it can work all together?
If it possible to hock up it to external monitor with USB-C and get 4K@60Hz + data transfer + charging, it will be so nice!9ac3 likes this. -
@vs40 any luck in determining if its possible to do "USB-C and get 4K@60Hz + data transfer + charging" ?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Thunderbolt should be able to do that with a good enough dock.
-
Right, OK I guess main question yet to be confirmed then is, quoting @vs40 again, does " user still need to manually switch between different TB3 mods in BIOS like DP/USB/Charging or now it can work all together?"
-
@Schwabe
Nope, I can't find any information. -
Is it possible to replace touchpad in this model with bigger one without dedicated buttons?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Not in ANY kind of normal fashion without a dremel and custom work.
-
I was interested in this laptop for a while, but since I am in the US, no Clevo resellers here are selling this model with an IPS screen. And importing it from Schenker would have been too expensive for me. In the end, I went with T480 with a Corporate Discount from Lenovo and it was well spec'd out for the final price of US$1100 I paid.

Recently, I bought an N141ZU, which is a very similar machine to the N141WU, just with an update Whiskey Lake CPU. As I couldn't find an owner's lounge for the ZU, I am writing here.
I tried to remove the back of the machine to look around in preparation for a HDD upgrade (I find the 7mm 2.5" HDD a tad noisy, and will probably replace it with a Samsung 860 QVO). Unfortunately, removing the back cover requires removing the keyboard, because there are 3 screws behind the keyboard that also hold the back cover. Removing the keyboard requires jamming a screwdriver through a hole on the back until the keyboard assembly pops out, and felt very risky, and I was afraid to irreversibly bend or break something. Hence, to make future maintenance easier, I decided not to put back the 3 screws, as they did not seem to hold anything but the back cover. So now my back cover is held in place by the 12 + 2 screws on the back. For now, I had no ill effects. Is this arrangement safe, or do those screw have some important role? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's going to lead to more motherboard flex which if you handle the machine a lot could cause solder failure on a bga.

@Meaker@Sager Thanks, I guess I will have to put those screws back. Any tips on how to remove the keyboard without bending it / breaking off the little tabs with slots around it that clip into protrusions on the upper assembly?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If you can get at the tabs with a plastic tool like the ones Ifixit provide then you should be safe.
-
So, I should ignore the hole on the back (I feel that opening my keyboard that way bent in slightly, which can be felt during typing. Seems inevitable, as basically the procedure in the service manual makes me dent the keyboard with a screwdriver / opening rod until the tabs near the right side pop.) and instead pry around the tabs with the ifixit tool?

Thanks! That technique worked perfectly, as caused much less bending. Do you have any idea why the service manual shows a much rougher (and potentially much damaging, although after about 24 hours, the bulge from my keyboard due to the rougher removal is now mostly gone) approach?
