**OFFICIAL W765CUH/NP7652 Owners Lounge**
As with it's predecessor, I don't expect many people to purchase this notebook. However, with the jump to the Intel Arrandale platform and a discrete video card, it might be more appealing to the casual crowd.
Since I am set on purchasing it I thought I would make an Owners Lounge with all the usual content... even if it's just me talking to myself.
Some reasons to consider this notebook:
- Intel Core i5/i7 processor
- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
- Clean and sleek design
- Chiclet keyboard
- Multi-Gesture touch pad
- Starting price is under $1000

At the time of this posting, the NP7652 is not yet listed for purchase on Sager reseller sites. Hopefully they will have it up soon. Resellers will typically have a lower price than Sager itself.
According to Brian Liaw at Sager, the NP7652 will be shipping in approximately 2 weeks. -
I look forward to your review.

Too bad they didn't do a little better for the video card on this one.

Yeah, I wish it was a little more powerful as well. Still, it's a big jump over the nVIDIA GeForce 105m in the previous model.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
I am definitely considering buying this laptop (either this, or the Lenovo Thinkpad T410). Can anyone comment on (based on experience with the previous edition) how nice the keyboard feels? This is the only thing which might prevent me from buying this laptop. I have typed on a Macbook Pro, which seems to have a similar keyboard, and I didn't think it felt so great.
Thanks,
Ryan -
Here is a thread on it's predecessor:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=419351
Previous owners seem to love the keyboard, which is also one of my main draws to it.
EDIT: If a mod is reading this and could add the H in W765CU H in the thread title it would be great! -
So I am trying to figure out who to order this system through.
- PowerNotebooks lists only the 1600x900 screen as LED backlit.
- XoticPC lists both as LED backlit.
- I use live chat with XoticPC to confirm the 1366x768 screen is LED backlit and the rep say he cannot confirm it.
- Sager responds to my e-mail saying both are LED backlit, but PowerNotebooks, which gets the notebook from Sager, lists only the one as LED backlit.
RJTech lists it as LED backlit but they do not get it from Sager. -
Here are some interesting comparison tests and some info on the European version options, such as a 9 cell battery option and Matte screen option. There is a review on the machine under "recent tests" of the mySN MB6 / Clevo W760C.
This link compares the CPU's in this machine.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Intel-Core-i3-i5-i7-Processors-Arrandale.25085.0.html
The 520 and 540 will probably be the most practical CPU's. -
I ordered NP7652 from PowerNotebooks today.

Looking forward to your review, particularly what your battery life turns out to be along with any performance decreases while on the battery. Good luck on your purchase. I may get one of these units too. -
I'm also looking forward to your review. Judging from these posts, you seem to be quite enthusiastic about the notebook, so I am sure it will be a fine review.
Regarding the real-world gains: I do math research from time to time on my laptop, and that 6% gain actually means a great deal to me. Say an algorithm runs .05 second faster with one processor. Now run that algorithm hundreds of thousands of times, and you've got gain. However, at the same time, anyone doing math that is using a notebook as their only PC should maybe consider an auxiliary desktop! For this reason, I will probably end up with the i5-540 to balance everything.
I am also interested in the battery life and heat with this notebook. Also, I am curious if you will be able to switch graphics (this will certainly affect battery life). I am still on the fence between this notebook and the Thinkpad T410, but for the same price, this one offers quite a bit more computer than the Thinkpad. It is just that damn keyboard...the Thinkpad most likely has a superior keyboard. -
afitzwater i'm looking forward to your review to. I read a german review of the laptop, and they had a bit of problems with noise from the coolingfans but was otherwise impressed with the performance and the build quality. (I think, german isn't my favourite language).
I've just ordered the notebook to, from germany actually. The configuration is almost the same as your's, but with the i5-540 and without the ATI 4570 gpu. I should recieve it sometime next week.
I'll use it for my studies, i'm starting on math-studies on a university in denmark in september this year. Hopefully it will be up to the task -
It's true I seem enthusiastic about this notebook. Most of it stems from the owners of its predecessor, the W765TUN/NP7650. All the owners I have talked to love the chassis, keyboard and screen. Since this is the same notebook (with the inclusion of an LED backlit screen) and better hardware under the hood I do have high hopes for it.
But I am a realist. I know this isn't a powerhouse gaming notebook, and I didn't buy it for that reason, so I won't hold it to that level when reviewing it. However, I won't be afraid to fault it if/when its necessary. -
afitzwater: I am glad that you plan to carry out an objective review despite your enthusiasm. I am still excited to hear about it.
Thanks,
Ryan -
I see there are a few mathemeticians considering this notebook. If anyone wants to point out any benchmarking software they would liked run I'd be happy to use it (assuming its free or has a trial).
-
When do you expect to receive the laptop and put up a review?
-
-
Sager's website says the product is now shipping, does that mean the product will be out the door within a day (or do they need time to build the laptop first)? And the reason you have to still wait 7 days, is that because you ordered from PowerNotebooks, and they dont have the laptops yet? Not exactly sure how this works; first time buying custom online...
-
PowerNotebooks is just a middleman. They don't actually get the laptops or handle them. They place the order through Sager and you will receive it directly from Sager. The benefit of ordering through a reseller is you get a slight discount and you have better customer support. That is not to say Sager has bad support, it's just there is a language barrier many do not like to do deal with.
As for the time for shipping, there is a 7-10 day build and burn-in time. It's possible it may be shipped out sooner but expect the 7-10 days from the order date. -
I wouldn't mind timing algorithms at all, but i don't know how to do it yet. But if you could guide me then no problem. -
Anyway, I will definitely be looking forward to see how the fan is for afitzwater. Oh, and I would be interested to see if it uses the chipset that allows switching graphics or not.
I wonder if there is any way to get a notebook from Clevo in the United States...I would really much rather get the notebook without the discrete GPU. -
Yes i really think the notebook looks really good.
I will get my notebook on monday, and then i will post a bit about the noise under different conditions. -
I too am interested in the 7652. Was prepared to order but waiting to see if Sager gives the option for the 5000 series ATI graphics. I emailed Powernotebooks.com and they say Sager is saying "soon" for the ATI 5000 options. Unfortunately didn't specify if the 7652 model will offer the 5xxx graphics. Just going to wait for a little and see.
Also concerned about cooling fan noise level, the 6 cell battery performance and how the 1600x900 res looks on the 15.6" screen.
Looking forward to any reviews.

Looks like that would be a "special request". I checked a couple resellers and they only list 6 cell smart lithium ion option. You can select a second 6 cell but no mentioned of 9 cell.
12 cell would be nice too. I was initially pricing out a HP DV6T with an optional 12 cell but the darn thing stuck out from the bottom of the laptop. It did help elevate the case for more air flow but I'd prefer the batt to be flush.
I think I could get along w/ 6 cell if need be but 9 would definitely be better.
-K -
-
Actually all I care about is Directx 11 support. If ATI put 11 into their 45xx cards I'd be all for it. I just assumed the 4xxx series were going to be strictly Directx10 and phased out with the directx 11, 5xxx series.
Will see what happens.
-K -
I just asked RJTech since they deal with Clevo and they were not able to get me the 9-cell battery
-
Perhaps the 9 cell will be avaliable in the future.
-K -
I just checked Clevo's site and it does show a factory option 9 cell batt.
Copied from the spec page.
"Removable 6 cells Smart Lithium-Ion battery pack 48.84WH
(Factory Option) Removable 9 cells Smart Lithium-Ion battery pack 73.26WH"
http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/products/prodinfo_2.asp?productid=232#
Now just waiting for the 5xxx graphics and I'll be placing an order.
-K -
Yeah, RJTech said it existed, they just couldn't order it. I don't think there is another retailer that works with Clevo directly except Sager in the U.S. so I may need to import it.
-
I just thought of a couple other things.
Checked Clevo's site again and it does not mention Intel turbo memory anywhere. They do list 2 mini card slots, "(1st for WLAN module with PCIe interface, 2nd for 3.75G with USB interface)"
Not sure I understand what that means. I'm assuming the WLAN slot is already used and the 2nd slot is an internal USB interface??
Also curious about disabling the touchpad while typing to prevent accidental movement. According to a review on youtube for an older Sager, it can be disabled but I see no button on the laptop. I'm guessing its a software disable or a keystroke combo?
Really looking forward to the 7652 reviews.
-K -
Standard touchpad disable for clevo is fn+F1
-
Does anyone know if it is possible to order this machine without the ATI graphics in the US?
I too am looking forward to some information. Mostly, I am really wondering about the fan noise/cpu temps. We're all looking to you afitzwater. You're the pioneer! -
Thanks for the touchpad info, theriko.
Measure, why do you not want ATI? Rather use the built in Intel or do you plan to install a different graphics card?
Looking forward to the fain noise & cpu temps too. My zv6000 fan runs constantly. Its not loud and I have gotten used to it over the years.
I can deal with a fan running all the time but I don't want it to sound like a train engine.

Edit: Silly me, it is the 4570 not the 5470. Stupid numbers...so
Well all of my video needs can easily be handled with the IGP, thus I'd like to save a little bit of weight/money. Additionally, I use Linux, and while ATI support is definitely coming along, it will probably be a while before there is support for this newer ATI model (and I am positive that Sager's website will never have linux drivers). On the other hand, Intel is typically pretty good about providing drivers to Linux.
wrong...
I have been trying to find out exactly how long it will be before there is support for the card, and one thing I noticed is that the sites seem to list it as a GDDR2 card, but according to AMD it supports only GDDR3/GDDR5, I thought I'd just mention this (see http://www.amd.com/us/products/notebook/graphics/ati-mobility-hd-5400/Pages/hd-5470-specs.aspx)
/wrong
Also, just to relay some more things I've noticed in my search is that the 5470 supports switchable graphics, and the HM55 chipset used in this clevo model also supports switchable graphics, so it seems like this is something we should expect from it.
Oh, and another thing, it appears from
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4570.13885.0.html that the gpu draws about 12-15watts, which I don't think is that much more than the IGP, sadly. Therefore, it may actually help to have the heat in two areas instead of concentrated in one. Who knows?
In terms of noise. I have a 4-5 year old laptop that had been using the fan quite a bit for the last year or so. I decided to take it apart (after having gained some confidence building a few desktops). In turned out to not be that hard to take it apart, but unfortunately I literally had to remove everything expect the mobo to get to the cpu. Anyway, I took off whatever weird gel/plate HP put between the heatsink and proc, and I added Arctic Silver 5, and now my fan hardly comes on, and my load temps are litterally 40-50C cooler (that's right, Celsius
Point being: I really don't want to hear my notebook while it's idling. Under load, I understand, but idling, the fans should be very quiet.
Phew, that was a dumb post.
Thanks,
Ryan -
I don't think you'll be able to order the unit without the ATI graphics in the U.S. The reason is Sager is actually using the W765CU model whereas the model without the ATI graphics is the W765C.
I think he wants the integrated graphics to save on battery life and heat.
I'll be sure to share all the info I can when I receive the unit. It's been 6 days since I ordered it so it shouldn't be too long before it ships. -
Thanks,
Ryan -
Well it's been 10 days since the order was placed and no e-mail of shipment. Hopefully I will get one tomorrow which means it would arrive on Monday if I do.
-
Waiting takes forever.
Looking forward to your opinions.
-K -
Another lurker keeping an eye out for your review!
-
-
I ordered this laptop (NP7652) from pctorque.com and I was just notified that Sager won't be shipping it for another 1-2 weeks. just a heads up...
-
I just got word my notebook is scheduled to ship tomorrow.
JCarver27 - I think the 1-2 weeks accounts for the 7-10 day build time that Sager requires. -
I ordered the laptop, and exactly 1 week later it shipped out. Should be getting it on Wednesday.
-
I've seen it listed at pctorque.com and powernotebooks.com, anywhere else? Anyone have any bad/good experiences with either e-tailor?
-
You can also get it at Xoticpc.com. All 3 of those are very reputable resellers.
I chose PowerNotebooks.com because I had used them in the past to purchase a Sager NP5760. -
edit: anybody know if it's worth waiting for?
