Hey guys, looks like I have just about decided to go with the d900f. Just am a little worried after reading a couple reviews saying there wa a "cheap" feel to the actual laptop, like low-q plastics were used on the body, as well as a cheap, loose feeling keypad.

But how does it feel to you guys? Does it feel solid when you are moving it around or like something might snap out or bend too much?

Plese give me a lil list of your pro\cons with this laptop. Prefer to hear it from everyday guys instead of review sited. Thanks.

also sometimes when I really feel like playing will play pretty heavy games and end up playing like 7-8 hours nonstop.

Would this be an issue with the cooling? Can it maintain safe temps that long under that stress?

It is very solid and cannot be considered as low cost.but it does not have a gamer look like the new alienware Mx17 or the M980NU.
And no trouble at all as for temperature.Believe me I stress the biest !!

Yes ,U buy a configuration without any OS.U install your 2 HDDs ,go to the bios and select the drive U will boot from.

as a rule to save money it is a good idea to buy a configuration with the smallest HDD ,and install those U have purchased elsewhere to the best price. I for myself ordered my configuration without os and with a 250 go 5400 seagate ,but installed 3 x 500go 7200 seagate HDDS.I saved a lot of money

Staying with the 2.66 i7 should i still expect to be completly satisfied for a good ways ahead? I was wanting a puter for around 1500 but after building one at hp with qcore 2.2 , 6g ram and nvidia 130m that ended up at 2400 usd seems like the d900f is a steal really

At what side does the heat come from. I would be using WASD, and might be resting my palm on the left side. I've never had any problems with heat on my aged Dell XPS M1710. It has a large palm area so I've gotten used to it the last three years :)

Ill tell you one thing id advise to do:
when you game or do cpu intensive tasks, use fn+1 (makes the fans go full blast) since the fans, at least on my machine, dont go full blast even at 80C.. and if i turn on full blast the temps never go over 70C so its much cooler that way.. should prolong the life of your lappy and avoid any problems..

Well I tried them, and I must say... DMC4 on super high 1920x1200 all with no AA = 45 FPS or so... that's on old drivers
now if I did that it wouldn't drop below 90 FPS. I'm running it on x8 AA now and it doesn't sink below 50 no matter what I do

Spiderman web of shadows Before drivers update = fire hydrants/explosions lag city
after update? I have yet to find a way to lag myself

Street Fighter 4. Problem. If I turn on AA even to x2, the display driver crashes and the game doesn't play. I uninstalled and reinstalled it even. Once it crashed my computer. I am rather annoyed at this fact, as even though I can put the models on high now without slowdown, if I turn off vsync it runs at about 100 FPS so I know I can take some AA but of course it doesn't work. Even GTA4 has no problems like this, so I don't know what I should do

Is AA that useful and does it make any sense with 1920x1200 screen resolution ?.I have tested a huge amount of games using AA and desactivating it afterwards.
To be honest I did not notice any difference in video quality . Sorry I actually did notice one - 20 to -30 FPS !!

Well it may not be that useful it's true, but if I have the power to use it without affecting my gameplay, why would I leave it off? It makes the game look smoother when running I would say. Thing is, before my driver updates, SF4 could go x4 AA and everything else highest, but models had to be on medium. I updated the drivers and everything could go on highest without a problem, however if I turned on AA at all my driver crashes. I don't know how to get around it, but it's an annoying fact because 4 other games I play use AA and they have no problems if I turn them on

    @D2 Ultima

I prefer playing 1920x1200 with each option to the max and no AA rather than playing 1600x1050 with each option to the max and full AA. the D900F can perform 90%(1920x1200) of all existing games with options to ultrahigh and x16 AA

Actually U may activate AA with the highest resolution for some very demanding games as soon as the next GPU comes out.As we can't have sli that is for us the sole issue.

It's not that I have to lower the resolution to use AA you see, it's because I have the ability to use AA without any lag whatsoever while on the max, but with one of my games it causes my display driver to crash and restart. I don't get why this happens you see, so I was asking if anyone knew what could be the cause of the problem

SF4 and 186.03 and AA just don't work. There's no way around it besides a different driver. But, SF4 doesn't need AA, the game has so much post processing it's unecessary. Enjoy that rock solid Vsync 60 FPS @1920x1200 and don't complain lol.

Lol well thanks you this is indeed the answer I was looking for XD
I wanted to be sure it was the driver and not anything else. But yes I shall enjoy my 60 FPS flat at 1920x1200 and I shall indeed be happy XD

Oh and one more question, what's the highest temp my GPU should hit before I start saying "oh "? I was playing web of shadows earlier, but for like 4 hours straight, closer to the end I saw the rendering/lighting get a little glitchy, and when I came out HWM said my max GPU temp was 86 degress. Just wondering should I like downclock it a bit or is that normal? The fans were set to high speed

Yeah I didn't make it go past 1000. It's clocked at 650/1000/1650 now and it's immensely stable so I'm happy ^^

I was playing Spiderman Web of Shadows and there's a part where symbiotes are running rampant in the city you see, and there's a base at Stark Industries. They got electric gates that repel the symbiote, and the floor was flashing the same colour as the gates (It's more like a moving energy barrier). I thought it was overheating issues but it happened when I stated with a cool 46 deg on the card, so it's just either bad coding or power limitation

Slight problem: The webcam - when I have my screen at the best angle, the cam shoots a bit high, meaning only my face from the nose tip and up shows.
Anyone know it there's a way to adjust the angle of the cam, so it aims a bit lower? I'm not going to detach and open the screen just to have a look if it can be done, I want to know beforehand if this is possible. So if anyone knows...

I'm too busy with work mon thru fri and on the weekends I spend that time with my g/f.

So I don't really have time to do anything with my 9280.

I did however do some benchmarks when I first go it and posted them here.

    birndof,

I noticed you have the D900F with the i7-975 but only 6 GB of mem. Any reason other than cost that you didn't go with more RAM? Also, will 12GB memory be useable/accessible with Vista x64 Home Prem?

    Thanks,

He uses his D900F to play games rather than for production. 12GB would be a waste of money for his use. 6GB is more than plenty.

I am also using my puter for ripping which requires memory but even for that 6gb are largely enough. The main point for not upgrading from 2 to 12 gb ,was simply the price.
At Mysn upgrading from 2 to 6gb costs 95 € (3x2048) upgrading to 12 gb costs 800€ !!!(3x4096) U understand now why I did not choose last mentioned option
Vista64 and windows 7 can take advantage of 12 gb

    Sager 9280 got here at 5:38! :)

So far, Firefox and Filezilla are installed and my WoW folder, all 14 Gigs, is on its way over. I hate window's networking. I did a few forum searches, but can someone PM or post a thread I saw some weeks ago with software recommendations for hardware monitoring? On the desktop I use coretemp and speedfan. I'll keep digging but thought I'd ask while I'm introducing myself.

    What I have...
    QX9650 4Gigs DDR2
    1 Terabyte HD
    9800 GX2
    SB X-Fi Extreme Gamer

    What I just got...
    i7 920 6Gigs
    2x 320 7200 HDs, no raid
    280M

It was a bit depressing to spend the cash on something slower in some respects to my current desktop. But, I have a girlfriend that lives 1.5 hours away. The 9280 will let me travel 2 or more times a month without worrying about wear and tear on the desktop machine. I'm also much more likely to stop by a friend's house for some Far Cry 2.

I ordered from xoticpc last Thursday and am very happy that the 3-7 business day build time was 2 plus 3 for shipping!

I'll look around, but I'm curious if everyone travels with the bare laptop + mouse or if they carry a bit more equipment with them for gaming sessions. On the desktop, I use the G15 and G5. I at least need to pickup a mouse for gaming on the laptop. For an extended night or weekend gaming, adding a keyboard to the bag would be no big deal. I do make some use of the macro keys, LCD and window's key toggle.

Btw, I appreciate the good info I got on these forums. I was surprised to find so much good info.

Hey, is there any disadvantage to leaving the fans at full speed all the time? Just wondering.

Also I'm annoyed with Windows Live!!! I bought SF4 legit and finally got to try it online for all of one week, when they force an update on us and it makes a list of "supported countries" and if you're not on that list you can't sign in as online... which sucks... because I'm not on that list >.<

I'd kill microsoft if it wasn't for Windows Vista Ultimate x64

Your fans will suck in more dust if you leave them on a faster speed for a longer amount of time. It shouldn't matter if you do routine maintenance on your machine once a month or once every two weeks.

okays cool, I think that should be good then. See it's so hot in my country the temps of the machine and the components are in the 50s sometimes 60s normally, but with the fans on high the components go down to the 40s and also the laptop feels much cooler as well. So I was thinking of leaving them on high, but was worried it might burn out the fans a lot faster.
