    Hello,
Can anyone help me identify the PCI 4 slot for the SSD?
I also have the service manual and they just show the location of the slots and state that 2 of them are SATA/pcie compatible and 2 are only pcie compatible.
There are 3 SSD slots in a row close to each other and one separate which is only SATA.
I suspect the PCI 4 is one of the 3 close together but which one? :)

Also if I put a pcie ssd in a SATA port it wouldn t show up right? Nothing would get broken?

    Thanks.

Right the Bottom 2 M.2 slots where there are 3 m.2 slots are PCI-E gen 3 and SATA the top m.2 slot in that bunch is just PCIE gen 3. The 4th M.2 slot is on the other side just beneath the fan.

If this is a X170KM its only active if an 11th gen CPU is installed as its PCIE gen 4 only.

If however you have a X170SM the 4th M.2 is SATA only and is in the same location.

Nothing breaks if you put them in the wrong slot.

https://ibb.co/crbjbMJ - this is the mainboard scheme with the m2 ports

thank you all for the answers, however...
    I think
this one is the PCI 4 slot
Here is an image of the mainboard from the service manual.
are you sure? Isn't it the other way around? The top one I think is the one i'm looking for, the PCI gen 4 slot, according to the image above, since number 7 is SATA only and number 6 are 2 SATA/PCIe slots.

And yes, this is a X170KM-G with an 11gen intel processor.
So If I had a 10gen processor I wouldn't be able to use this slot?

I am sure as in mine i have two SATA's on the bottom two of the bunch of 3 and an NVME PCI-E SSD in the top.

The one i class top for PCIE only is the one next to the USB port, the ones below are PCIE/SATA

as @MD9787 rightly pointed out the board in the picture is the SM not the KM.

Yes guys, you are right, thanks for the answers.

So to sum it up and avoid confusion...
Number 7 highlighted in my picture above is the M2 SSD PCI GEN 4 slot right?
    https://ibb.co/crbjbMJ

and yes, the picture above is from an SM board, but the whole service manual is for the KM, it is a mistake, they didn't replace the screenshots, probably because the 2 models are so similar.

Actually, no, the manual doesn't tell you **** about upgrading and changing hardware, only the service manuals do this :).

Just out of curiosity, if you buy it with a gen 10 intel what would that slot be? only SATA, only PCI gen 3? :)

I'm confused about this as well, mines a KMG with 11900k and a Samsung 980 pro 2tb. the 3 m.2 slots only show as gen3 and the slot under the fan doesn't even show the storage installed in bios.

The 3 M.2 Slots are only PCI-E 3.0 the Single M.2 slot is only active with RocketLake CPU's and is a PCI-E 4.0 slot.

Also the 3x m.2 slots are connected to the chipset so have a maximum bandwidth total of the chipset.

I have a rocket lake 11900k and bios doesn't show my 980 pro 2tb when I put it in the single slot. This is why I'm confused, I have everything but it's not working

I agree with meaker, try it in one of the 3 slots, top being ideal choice if it shows in bios then, then in the bios will be option for Intel RST Premium if that is enabled disable it so it defaults to AHCI mode, then try it in single slot again.

If you have another M.2 you can test in the first slot would also be a good thing to try.

Tried installing Windows on the 980?

It‘s „normal“ that drives in the pci-e 4 slot won‘t show up in bios.

and where? Do have a screenshot?
The Slot is Not connected to the irst. And it‘s not a sata slot.
it should show up in a proper bios, but thats Not a proper bios ;)

Not showing up doesn‘t mean Not working. It should come up at installing windows

All 4 Slots show in my Bios without issue @MD9787 but then again i don't use Samsung SSD's for a good reason (They die very quickly on me, WD/SANDISK ones are still either 100% Life or 95% Life whilst Samsung ones tend to hit 75% life after 5 months).

Does this happen on any Bios it not showing? If its showing in Windows then it means its working so might be a compatibility issue with the 980 SSD and the Bios which only contacting your ODM/SI for a bios update might solve.

I think it would be best if you go into your BIOS and take screen shots of the relevant area for us to look at as we are all technically helping blind here. I will also do the same as well as i have all 4 Slots filled.

Edit: This is where i shows my M.2 Devices in BIOS.

I think there is a misunderstanding. I don´t need any help :-D Everything is working just as it should. That´s why I asked @technyne if he already tried installing windows, because he only told us his drive is not showing up in bios and that doesn´t mean it´s not working.

I can take screenshots, but what areas are relevant to you? That´s why I asked where the slot shows up in your bios.

Of course mine shows up in the boot section. But to be shown there it has to have an efi partition. The empty drive of the guy that asked won`t show up there until he installs windows.

Ok, you are right. But it seems that you don‘t have the standard bios but the one from pcs. The standard doesn’t have that much options

Apologies for lack of replying, I drive local truck hauling and it's been crazy with the cold weather and loads of snow. Once I put any drive in the single slot, my 980 pro. Sn850 or even my buddy's cheap firecuda. It simply doesn't show up in bios or windows or even linux. All 3 have fully functional windows and work flawless in one of the 3 slots and show up in bios. I have pictures but keep getting errors on uploading

If nothing shows up you need to speak to your reseller, there may be an issue with the board.

I'm having issues with my X170KM-G too and the Gen4 slot. System was shipped with the 1TB Gen4 in the Gen3 slot while equipped with an 11th gen CPU. Moving it to the Gen4 and system has powered off, BSOD and trying to install Intel chipset drivers freezes the entire system and it never completes. Tested with the included 1TB gen4 and an SN850 Gen4 500GB same issues.

Moving back to Gen3 and everything works fine.

Definitely worth speaking to your resellers about that.
