Hello my fellow Clevo owners,
after some good time with this bad boy i now plan to upgrade the storage space with a bigger and hopefully faster 2TB M.2 SSD. For now I have a Samsung 970 Pro 1 TB M.2 2280 mounted.
Now to my problem choosing the best one performance (IOPS), longevity and temperature wise.
From what I have read in the manual this laptop only supports to max. Gen3 x4 and nowadays there a already Gen4 SSDs that need two corresponding controllers on the mainboard to get the best speeds which this notebook doesn't has.
From my knowledge the following controllers are the top for SSDs: "Phison E16", "Phison E18", "Samsung Phoenix" and "Samsung Elpis".
My assumptions from the past:
My questions:
- Buy only MLC or SLC SSD (because of longevity)
- Mount a heatsink like "Ekwb EK-M.2" on the SSD for better temperature at load times
- Only buy SSDs with DDR cache (for better short-term performance)
My candidates for now (but only with 3D TLC and all with 2TB):
- What and is there a benefit of NVMe 1.4 for my laptop?
- Is there even a 2TB SSD with MLC or SLC on the market (within the next month) or do I need to buy 3D TLC ones?
- Are the new Gen4 SSDs still faster when they run at reduced Gen3 speeds?
- Or should i stick to cheaper Gen3 SSDs?
- Which M.2 2TB SSD can you recommend me to buy?
Thank you in advance for your help with my problem. I wish you all a good day.
- WD Black SN850
- Sabrent Rocket 4.0, Rocket 4 Plus
- Samsung 980 Pro (available next month)
- Corsair MP600

Hey, I plan to buy the Samsung Pro 970. Can I ask how is it performance?
-
It was the best from my perspective when i bought it back in the day. I deleted my past benchmarks but you can find a lot e.g. on amazon and I still watch the tier list on:
https://linustechtips.com/topic/1092033-ssd-tier-list/
My results where nearly identical to the above.
But one thing you should consider is to install the best driver combination (NVMe and IME):

The newest drivers are not always the best.Last edited: Jan 23, 2021 -

Samsung NVMe drives are known to run extremely hot. The best NVMe for laptops is the Hynix P31. It has performance near the top for mainstream PCIe 3.0 drives, and more importantly is very cool and efficient.

Interesting and it's not even M.2 alas SATA.
Question: Does SATA not limit the performance in write speeds on big data?
And not a candidate for me at the moment because it's only available until 1TB and I am searching for a 2TB SSD. -

The first question to ask with an SSD is what are you using it for?

The video editing is the main thing, you break it up by usage type in terms of read write.
Games and OS? Mostly read so QLC is probably fine for the NAND.
Light video editing (using it as a scratch space) TLC is probably fine.
Heavy video editing (or other write intensive tasks) MLC is probably worth it.
You could use your existing 960 pro as your scratch space and a TLC or QLC larger drive will do fine for the rest.Phönixfire and thewizzard1 like this. -
ive got 2x samsung evo plus 1tb in it. very happy with it

Samsung drives run very hot.
I switched from Samsung drives to SK Hynix P31 drives for my laptops. I only use 500GB drives, but SK Hynix power efficiency and temps are currently on another level.

A distant second for temps I've found are the WD SN750 (not 850) series if you need 2TB:

Even the SN850's run much cooler than Samsungs.Phönixfire likes this. -
I got to the same conclusion they are getting hot. I have on both of my evos thermal pads and heatsinks and with the laptop coolpad under with noctua fans and im still getting around 57-60 degress on them, without coolion i was gettin mid 80... They are fast but also hot

So is there no benefit performance-wise for the WD SN850 over the WD SN750 (with an older controller on our mainboard)? That could help me decide to drop the newer ones.
Thx for the suggestion, I will take it into the closer circle.
Would be wonderful if the magazines would have tested these new drives also on Gen3 x4 controllers. Most of the ones which I read only tested the max. performance on the new controllers. Maybe someone can link us to an article where such test is done. -

There can be differences in small file speeds (how responsive it will feel) so worth checking reviews.

Not so many answers in hind sight to my first post and questions. Should a mod maybe move this topic/thread to the buy section?
Nevertheless thank you all for the information stated so far . It shed some light to the topic for me but most is still in the dark. -

The only difference that gen 3.0 Vs 4.0 makes is the max bandwidth so cap all the drives at 3.5GB/sec and the reviews still apply.

So i got a good discount for the WD SN850 2TB and finally bought it.
Is the " EK Water Blocks EK-M.2" still the best passive heatsink / cooler for SSD or should i buy something else? I read that now these coolers come with a rubber band...Last edited: Feb 3, 2021 -

That and or thermal pads.

Drives in raid run cooler due to the chipset bandwidth cap so that's a plus.

Your manual should guide you but go into the bios and put it in raid mode, reboot and create the array and reinstall the system (all data is lost).
