Thermal Paste Complete: Mandatory. Not an Option. :)
    * Don't mind the MX4 LOL that was just left over from something... How about that toothpaste that is rated at 401w/mk...which happens to be the thermal conductivity of copper.

    Greetings,

I will be repasting the P775DM3 very soon and will be posting up the results w/ a lot of pictures for your entertainment. My liquid metal paste of choice will be Grizzly Conductonaut, however, I'll be experimenting with other pastes as well to satisfy any curiosity as to if one can get by with just traditional paste. (Highly doubtful, but I am curious about GC.)

Traditional paste wise, I have a feeling that GELid will hold up pretty well.

While I'm at it, I'll also be replacing the thermal pads. Depending on how warped the heat sink is, I have pressure paper handy to be able to test the contacts of the die and IHS against the Heat Sink. If needed, I have copper shims standing by of varies sizes from 0.1mm to 0.3mm+
    ...

Below are the conductivity numbers for the top Liquid Metals and Traditional Paste:
(As we know the numbers don't mean everything, however, from all my tests done so far, Grizzly Conductonaut has always topped CLLU by an average of ~3C. Results may vary. However, because I am repasting, every drop in C's count. It could make all the difference in some scenarios. To each his own...)

    Liquid Metals:
    Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut - 73 W/mk
    Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra - 38.4 W/mk
    Coollaboratory Liquid Pro - 32.6 W/mk

    Traditional Paste:
    Gelid GC Extreme: 8.5 W/mk
    Grizzly Kyronaut: 12.5 W/mk
    ICD: 4.5 W/mk

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Project 775:
    (9/22/16)
The Repaste and Delid are now complete. I've been gathering temp data non stop, along with fine tuning the machine to find where it is the happiest. The temps have been amazing and I'll be posting up a full review shortly. -

Please post your results using the format below in order to keep things uniform and organized:

Excited to see the results. Currently debating what to use for my repaste once my laptop shows up. I've heard the liquid metal outperforms normal pastes but seen varying reports of how much.

In my opinion, these power house of beasts shall see nothing but Liquid Metal. It's clear that even with ICD (which I'm not a fan of) the temps are terrible. Granted it could be many factors including the warped heat sinks, not making proper contact with the die and IHS, but still...unacceptable. This leads me to believe that traditional paste should be skipped all together.

The difference between liquid metal and traditional paste is significant. More so in that we're dancing in extreme territories with temps, therefore, every C counts so I'll take any temp drop that I can get.

    Organic makes it even better.

Is it me or are you too surprised that these companies have the wits to be shipping these beasts out with traditional paste? I just don't get it...it baffles me...

However, I'm sure the majority of the people who buy these machines plan to repaste anyway, so in that case I get it....why waste the money on thermal paste when it's going to be wiped right off anyway...

But what about those that just want to have a nice performing car from out of the gate? (My answer: I don't think they should be buying these then... :p)

I think the companies should let it be known and be more up front about it.

    Notice:
"These machines are for enthusiasts and will be shipped with toothpaste for the purpose of adding a protective layer between the heat sink and IHS / die for transit. It is required that you repaste with a paste of your choice."

You pretty much answered your own question there. They use junk paste anyway.. It's probably cheaper than toothpaste.

First thing I'll be doing is inspecting the paste spread to see what kind of Heatsink I have.

Out of curiosity, how does icd7 compare to gelid or kryonaut? I'm not familiar with any of these pastes but they seem to be the top traditional pastes from my reading.

Traditional paste wise those three are safe to say that they are among the Top 3...however, they are not created equal.

This is very subjective so I can only tell you from my own personal experience. You can also see benchmark tests from others to put 2 and 2 together to make it sensible for you. That's what I basically had to do, in ordering them all and spending half my life with trial and error in very controlled environments.

Here are my Top 3 in order:

    1. GELid Extreme: This paste just works and is the best IMO for having the highest integrity in the traditional paste category. It also produces the best results and lasts a long time. In fact, I've never had to change out this paste in any of my applications.

    2. Grizzly Kyronaut: This paste was designed for extreme over clockers, which also means that it was meant to be applied/removed frequently. I honestly don't think this paste was made for longevity, therefore, the integrity of this paste is weak. It doesn't last long at least from my experience. (May have had a bad batch. Very possible) After a few weeks, I've gained 3-4C in temp both on my CPU and GPU's...over and over again across desktops and laptops...This is why I think this paste was designed specifically for a purpose like over clocking competitions... There are members on NBR who have also reported an increase of temps so take it for what it's worth....again it may just have been a bad batch. I'll give this paste a shot again for sure...

    3. ICD7: Mixed feelings...personally I don't like it. Does it really scratch the die surface? Yes. You'll get little spider web scratches on the surface, which is just annoying to anyone with any form of OCD. The paste is a bit thicker so that's why I think a lot of these companies use it to have that extra tolerance to fill the gaps, which in a way is a shame because there shouldn't be that much tolerance, to be forced to use a thick paste to cover it up lol. This stuff is nothing to write home about. I have also experienced an increase in temps after a few months....

Hope this helps....I'd say GELid all the way....

Saw this thread and thought i'd throw in my own experience. this is with Gelid GC Extreme, IC24 and Liquid Pro. My personal rig has a 4710MQ and a 970M in a P150SMA barebones. I initially pasted it with IC24 and it did last quite a while but strangely my CPU temps were quite high with Afterburner reporting it at around 85 celcius on average. My 970M faired a tad better with max temps of around 75 on a 75 core and 110 mem OC. Now granted that i live in a pretty hot and humid tropical country but imo that cpu average was pretty concerning and that was with a cooling pad too. Took off the heatsinks and found the spread on the CPU to be all over the place, junking up on the sides of the die rather than having a nice layer over the IHS. Repasted it with Liquid Pro as the Ultra was not available in my country and it brought temps back down to more comfortable levels of 79 for the CPU and a small dip to 73 on my GPU. Left it on for a few weeks to try it out. But boy did that leave a mark on my heatsink. It now has this permanent silver staining on it. Luckily the die was not affected. I got my hands on GC Extreme and thats what im currently using for both my desktop and laptop. 4710MQ temps average around high 60s to mid 70s and never actually going over the 77 mark. GPU is lovely at around 60ish celcius. Been using it for only about a week so im gonna leave it on for several more weeks to see if it has the longevity im looking for since that GC tube i have is awfully small.

Edit: Used GC Extreme after my friend's P650RS with a 1070 told me he was hitting 80 plus celcius with an IC24 paste job. Ran a 20 min heaven benchmark loop in ultra for him and sure enough, 83 around the 9 min mark. Found out the paste job was shoddy AF with stuff leaking on to the substrate rather than covering the die. Gave it a nice helping of GC extreme and left the benchmark to loop again. We somehow forgot about the laptop and went for an Ultimate Frisbee game for about an hour and a half. Came back and found it running nicely at its full boost clock and a chilly temp of 71 celcius. His 6700HQ also got repasted and ran around 68 celcius

Anyone experienced IC Diamond going all over the side of the die and on to the substrate rather than forming a nice layer?

Yes. My theory is that the quality of the actual binders (silicon base stuff and stuffs) used in ICD looses its integrity due to them likely over compensating on making it thicker, in order to compensate for the grittiness of the diamond particles? In order to mesh it all together the binding agent would have to be thicker, but since silicon doesn't have a high viscosity, the paste itself is likely weakened under high temperatures that makes it break apart / lose its form, from whatever it is they are using to thicken the paste.

    Hope that makes sense.

This is really helpful - I'm just about to pull the trigger on a P650RS and they have a nice deal with free IC diamond paste job. Unfortunately the config is actually cheaper with the IC diamond paste - it sounds like I'll just have to be ready to clean that gunk off right away and put on a bit of GC extreme.

Very nice! Either way with receiving it with generic or ICD paste, make sure to get some good base temp data / numbers first before repasting. I'm creating a spreadsheet at the moment and that info will be useful.

Sure thing. I'll have everything updated and available on the OP.

The goal here is to keep things as organized and uniform as possible. Forums are great, but man trying to find certain things can be a nightmare. The search button can only do so much and I'm a firm believer that a user shouldn't have to dig through non related things to get to the info. that they are seeking. This is not to be confused with being lazy.

Organized content is not equal to a lack of organization on a forum. :)

Ah, great question. The best way that I've found to remove it is to apply some Arcticlean, formula #1 and let it soak for a few minutes, then use a scrubber like the grey one that comes with the CLLU kit and gently scrub it out in circular motion.

It'll take some time, but keep scrubbing and you'll see it start to come off.

The reason that I use that grey scrubber is because I don't want to use sand paper since it'll eat away at the copper and create some unevenness. It's already warped as it is...don't want to be taking off more layers (thinning it out) and making it worse.

The thing about a metal scrubpad is that it conduct electricity. A few small shreds of the pad on your motherboard could ruin your day! Something like a scotchbright pad might be okay but even this can leave scratches. Would a clean shammy cloth work?

Thank you for taking the time to do this - it definitely makes things a lot easier for people trying to do this stuff!

Great point. This is why I've aways used the grey scrubber pad or something like it to clean my heat sink. It may take twice as long, but to me it's worth it.

Just put in my order for a P650RS-G. I'll report stock temps and such following the advice at the top of the thread when the unit comes in. I'm also buying some Gelid GC-Extreme and ArcticClean as I know I'm going to take the stock paste job off after that (and post new temps of course).

I went ahead and ordered the GC extreme compound and cleaner from Amazon in prep for an eventual repaste. At least I'm emotionally prepared to see what's inside. Sounds like it could appear as though a monkey tried to have intimate relations with it...!

Certainly worth doing it away from the chassis.

I'm gonna put in an order for liquid pro soon since they dont distribute liquid ultra in my country. Other than using electrical tape to cover up the transistors and the VRMs, are there any other methods to do so?

I do not recommend Pro. See if you rather can find Grizzly Conductonaut or Phobya Liquid Metal

Definitely no Phobya Liquid in my country hahahah. And i dont think T-Grizzly has brought Conductonaut in my region yet. Plus i'm a bit concerned about the longevity of Conductonaut after reading @iunlock's previous postings

He was referring to grizzly kryonaut if it's the post I'm thinking of. Which is traditional paste.

My traditional go-to paste now is GC Extreme. Switched over from IC24. That stuff was super hard to get out of the tube without warming it up first and it was not spreading on the dies properly

Edit: Kyronaut is available in my country but i have not bought a tube to try out yet. Still sitting on two tubes on GC Extreme. Also, my "test bed" for thermal pastes will be my P150SM-A barebones as i OC my chips which i don't plan to do with my soon to be here P670RS (just in case consistency is needed as i am very interested in helping @iuunlock with his thermal paste testing and charts)

I have just ordered 11.1 Grams of Grizzly Kyronaut again to give it another shot. I'd say 8 out of 10 people so far have experienced what I have, so I am hoping that we may have had a bad batch.

I too wouldn't recommend Pro unless you plan to really do a lot of prep and take great care of taping around the CPU and GPU, even with the use of a shim if need be...The viscosity of Pro is a lot less compared to CLLU and even GC. They are all 'liquidy' of course, but Pro doesn't bind together very well.

Gelid Extreme is also my go to paste and I have another 10 Grams on its way. However, I will be giving Grizzly Kyronaut another shot and test it side by side Gelid for sure.

Looking forward to getting some data populated on here.

Gelid Extreme is good for the price. The tube is quite big. I'm happy using it on my GPUs

So far my experience with Liquid Pro has been pretty good. I used my own cotton swab to spread it on the dies so i did not have to deal with the default swab. Also, would using any kind of liquid metal compound still require a lot of prep to ensure that none of it goes on to the substrate and transistors? :)

Edit whatdya mean by bind well?

Also, whats up with your longevity issue with Conductonaut? If my local reseller can bring some in i'll most definitely be using it

Edit: I'll most likely be getting a batch of Liquid Pro first since its the most readily available liquid metal thermal compound available in my area right now

Oh it's not Grizzly Conductonaut that I'm referring to....Conductonaut is amazing and going strong. It's my favorite liquid magic.

What I was referring to was my first experience with a tube of Grizzly Kyronaut. When it first first came out, I had repasted three laptops with it and after about 3-4 weeks it gained ~3C in temps. However, I really think that it may have been a bad batch. Then a few other users on NBR at the time reported the same thing happening to them with the raise in temps. Again, we may have just been early adopters of a bad batch ...who knows... because there are folks on here like @Mobius 1, where Kyronaut has been holding strong so that is why I am thinking that we had a bad batch of the early production of Kyronaut....

I actually ordered some Kyryoanut ...11.1 Grams worth and it's on its way....

    I've ordered some

GELID Solutions Extreme Performance GC-3 and Articlean for a re-paste tomorrow. Currently its at stock with Artic mx-4 from supplier so I'm going to bench and watch temps tomorrow then repaste. Hoping for a hassle free experience with this new machine
