I wasn't planning on upgrading to Pascal, but after seeing the benchmarks, I had to get one. I originally ordered a MSI GT72VR from Amazon, but upon learning that it was an Optimus system, I had them intercept the package and return it before it could be delivered.

That was the sign that I should have stuck with Clevo/Sager. After sorting through all the Pascal-equipped options, I settled on the P775DM3-G/NP9172, as it looked to offer the best balance of performance per dollar. I had ordered a Crown notebook from Powernotebooks.com back in 2006, and @Donald@HIDevolution was my consultant then. He also assisted with a custom order for my dad in 2008 - a notebook he still uses every day. Here's the real kicker - Donald actually remembered those transactions, which absolutely floored me.

Based on my past and current great experiences with Donald, the other positive reviews from users on this forum, and the fact that they're providing @Prema with a system to create custom BIOS mods, I chose to give my business to HIDevolution. Key specs as ordered are:

    Core i7 6700K | 16 GB RAM | GTX 1080 | 128 GB M.2 SSD | Killer wireless | 1080p G-Sync display | 3-year parts warranty

Cost: $2,798. It's a bit more than I was planning on spending, but HIDevolution's flexible payment options (I'm doing 0% financing for 6 months) allowed me to stretch the budget.

I'll be swapping the 128 GB SSD in the P775 with the Samsung SM951 and PNY CS1311 in my current P770ZM.

    The timeline is as follows:

    08/18/2016: Order placed
    08/19/2016: Order processing
    08/22/2016: Order sent to pre-production
08/29/2016: System in production but was moved to "parts/product on order" shortly thereafter
08/31/2016: Informed that a defect in the system was discovered during testing and an entirely new shell needed to be ordered, which has set back production by a few days
09/07/2016: System is back in production. And shipped!
09/13/2016: Machine received - this post was edited from it!

And thus, the waiting game concludes.

Congratulations! Are you planning on upgrading to the 120hz display and PremaMod once they are available?

Definitely not on the display, maybe/maybe not on the BIOS. The system will be connected to my external G-Sync monitor 99.9% of the time. In fact today was the first day in literally the last 2 months where I actively used my P770ZM "undocked" from the monitor. I don't travel like I used to so I use either my Yoga 2 Pro or Chromebook when I need portability. There is no point in me waiting to get some feature that I would rarely, if ever, use.

Far as the Prema mod, I don't plan to overclock but if there are enough useful features, I'll more seriously consider it.

My order has been moved to the production phase. In the meantime, I've upgraded to the 3-year hardware warranty, the cost of which was mitigated a bit by a drop in price on the CPU.

HIDevolution - The Best Company I ever dealt with

    Benefits of Prema BIOS:

    • The ability to disable other drives connected to your system without physically removing them from your laptop, this comes in handy when installing Windows as you never want to have more than one drive connected at the time you are installing Windows otherwise the Windows setup will place the boot files on the 2nd drive it sees which hurts performance and makes it a headache when creating system images or restoring since the boot files are not on the main drive.
    • The ability to overclock, increase Turbo Power Limits and System IA/Core Current Limits
    • The ability to enable Intel Speed Shift Technology (it is disabled in the stock BIOS)
    • The ability to run RAM with speeds higher than the standard 2133 MHz. I am not talking about overclocking here, I am talking about actual RAM sticks that are rated to run at 2800 MHz for example like the G.Skill 64GB 2800 MHz kit I have. With the stock BIOS, they will not run above 2400 MHz. In the case of the P870DM3, the stock BIOS now supports up to 2666 MHz. I believe but not more, so the Prema BIOS is a must again
    • The ability to enable CSM for those who want to install other OSes like Windows 7
    • The ability to undervolt the CPU as the stock voltage is way too high which causes the CPU to overheat much quicker and thus throttle under load.
    • The ability to enable or disable CPU AES instructions or Virtualization
    • The ability to disable hibernation from the BIOS

    Benefits of Prema VBIOS:

    • Power throttle disabled
    • Over-voltage slider enabled and adjusted (up to a maximum of 1.2v)
    • Activated and adjusted thermal slider (to keep it cooler if desired)
    • Core overclock slider limit raised
    • Power consumption meter activated
    • Fixed 3D voltage base-line in order to stabilize OCs and voltage-match both cards in SLI systems (based on average ASIC)
    • Thermal protection @ 92c (once*91c are breached the system throttles volts and clocks in order to protect it)
    • Protection against Furmark and Kombustor GPU burnout (AVOID those software even with stock vBIOS)!

Update: I was informed by Donald that a defect popped up during the testing phase and that a new shell needed to be ordered, as what they had was the last one in stock. Not much to do at this point but continue to wait patiently, though I very much appreciate the honesty in informing me of what the delay is.

Better than shipping it to you with the defect! Let us know how it is when you get it.

their quality control is awesome. Better wait and get a perfect machine than to receive it and go through the hassle of sending it back for an RMA

    hang in there brah

    Okay thanks.
I bought p775dm3. Since I dont play alot of games, single gpu does more than enough for me.
BTW I heard samsung memory can be oced to 2800 with stock bios on the new p750dm.

    @Phoenix

    Finally memory voltage is possible.
Even 3000mhz is possible with stock bios.

And there were no delays as far as production, as I just received a shipping notice. Assuming it get picked up tomorrow, it will then be arriving next Wednesday.

There was a small hangup with the financing, but that should be straightened out now. It's all in FedEx's hands now.

The machine arrived today in superb condition. Had a little trouble getting Windows set up properly at first, but that's all straightened out now. The only real "problem" is that I can't get the computer to see my network attached printer, but I got around that by hooking it up to a USB hub. It's an old piece of junk anyway, so I don't I don't care too much. I posted this in the owner's lounge thread, but I did an unboxing video of the computer for my YouTube channel:

There's still some configuration work to do, but so far everything is looking good. Big thanks to HIDevolution for the reasonably quick turnaround, despite a delay in waiting for a new shell. Can't wait for this thing to provide a few years of loyal service, maybe more since it has a Thunderbolt 3 port that could allow for connection of an eGPU down the line.

Follow-up. I ended up returning the P775DM3 because of the thermal throttling, fan noise, and it was glitching my external monitor at 144Hz. HID refunded me in full with no issue.

I thought about getting the same machine again but this time with a de-lidded CPU and other upgrades, but the costs were getting a bit too much to bear. As such, I elected to take a step down to the P670RS with the GTX 1070. It's BGA, but it will have the 3-year hardware warranty. I only intend to keep it for 2 years anyway and upgrade again when Volta comes out. Having the extra warranty will make the system that much more salable.

While it won't be as fast as the 1080, the 1070 is still a noticeable step up from a 980M. I elected to go with the 6820HK CPU with Coollaboratory compound. The motherboard is on backorder at the moment, but they're expecting to get it in by the end of next week. Not a big deal.

What kind of thermal throttling did you get? How high were your temps? Were you overclocking? How low did it throttle? I am considering buying this machine with the 1070.
