Razer blade 2015 14" keyboard and mouse not working after cleaning

Hi all,

Unfortunately after cleaning the keyboard/ LCD screen with a what I not realise was a water based spray and cloth, the keyboard and mouse pad/ mouse buttons no longer work.
I have reset Windows 10 back to the default, and can see that the keyboard and mouse pad are not mentioned in the device manager, so are not being recognised.
I popped down to my local laptop repair shop at the weekend and they suggested that I strip the laptop and clean the back of the keyboard with isopropyl to remove any residue in case of water damage. I managed to strip the laptop down (Removed the motherboard etc, but when I get to the back of the keyboard it appears to be stuck down with some kind of mesh, has anyone successfully removed it in the past and if so, please can they advise the best way to do it so that following cleaning I can hopefully reuse it.
One other question, is there an electronics board below the mesh, if not I guess removing the keypad won't help.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Replace everything with new parts, replace the keyboard and the touchpad and you should be good. Have the laptop repair shop do that if you have to.

Razer is the only repair option and they are expensive.

You normaly can't buy parts, razer has a bad policy for that.
Everything you can buy is probably used and ripped out of a broken one.
And those parts are normaly just from the 2014 model.

@silverghost123 How is the machine now ?
The 2014 keyboard was screwed in with a lot of small screws.
They are below the mesch that is held in place by a few stripes of glue / double-sided tape.
Edit 1: Yes tehere is a PCB below the mesh, its the Keyboards PCB.
Mesh, just stuck to a metal sheet that is covering the back of the Keyboard PCB.
You can easely ripp off the mesh. Screws below that as said.

The Touchpad is glued in place as far as i can see.
carefully heating it up may loosen the glue.
But be carefull!

im currently resurecting 2x 2014s and the only inconveniences are shipping to Germany and time ...

Thanks guys, unfortunately it was impossible to source a keyboard/ mouse mat from any suppliers in the UK and Razer don't sell them to individuals, so as a last resort I have sent it off to their repair centre in Germany, it arrived on Xmas eve, so I don't expect to get it back until the second week or so in January. Will be interesting to see how much they are going to sting me to replace the items.

I received an email back from Razer saying that the motherboard needs replacing and it will cost nearly £1200, I could get a new machine for that.
I obviously declined the replacement and am getting it shipped back now.

If anyone knows where I could get hold of a second hand replacement motherboard it would be really appreciated, the one I have has the following spec -
2015 Razer Blade 14 i7 4720HQ 2.6-3.6GHz QHD+ 3200x1800 Multitouch NVIDIA 3GB GTX 970M 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Windows 8.1

Thankfully everything else is still working, so I will attach a USB keyboard and mouse, but will probably sell it if I can't get a second hand motherboard in the next couple of months.

I will keep an eye out on ebay for anyone breaking down their laptop and fingers crossed I will be able to buy a motherboard.

I'd like to give it a try!
Considering that there are no schematics availaible, i'm probably the only idiot that spends time on figuring out how they work and i gathered a lot of knowledge over the past three month.
And i have two 2014 blades that i can use as reference and part donators.

My theory is (obvoisly) water damage not only in the keyboard but also either on connectors or even worse, the main system controller, an IT 8528E, if they didn't change that one, but they used that in the blade stealth, so it seems to be their go to controller..

Very kind of you to offer, I will try to source a second hand motherboard initially, to be honest i am a little reluctant to send the laptop abroad again without trying to get it sorted out in the UK.

Even though i doubt that it will be cheap or safe,
in case you get a motherboard of off somewhere, i'd like to get the old and broken one.

And in case i can do anything to cure that reluctance, let me know.

If you like to try and repair it yourself i'd also like to help.

In your case, it will moste likely be visible corosion around a few specific parts.


You could begin with posting poictures of the topside of the motherboard, the side without the CPU and GPU.

the more Res and detail the better!

is your capslock on? Because my touchpad and keyboard stopped working but the capslock is on. I Didn't assume water damage but due to it being in a travel bag and maybe a connector got disconnected. But I might be wrong, eventhough I didn't face any rain

 

Hi @marcyff2 the capslock is an idependent LED that even works, when the seperate lighting doesen't.
To me, this means that the keyboard is still connected to the motherboard and therefore gets enought power to light and do its thing.
The connectors are pretty secure too and taped in place, so its pretty unlikely that they got loose.

In general, the Keyboard is just a "mesh" / Grid of switches and wires.
Both keyboard and trackpad seem to be connected to an ALTERA Max V 240Z CPLD who handles the seperate buttons of the trackpad and the n-keyRoleover of the keyboard.
Maybe you get error-messages in Windows device-manager.
Please have a look there!

What generation of Razer Blade is it?
Do you still have waranty ?

Any problems with opening it and posting pictures ?

Hi @RageBone thank you for clarifying. No problem opening as I spent a lot of time doing so yesterday. Will send some pictures once i get home this evening.

The Razer blade is the 2015 (970m QHD+) version

No the warranty expired February of last year, I also ordered it from the US and I live in the UK, and I have changed the internal ssd so warranty is pretty much voided.

I did check the connectors and all seemed fine. but will send pictures once I get home.
