Razer Blade Pro 17 4K shutting down while playing games

Hey guys,

I have been facing an issue off late. My RBP 17 shuts down while playing games, even at low settings.
Just to give you a brief background, I'm running my system on UPS, without battery as my battery had bulged 6 months back and I can't ship it out to Razer, I live in India. I have to physically take the laptop to another country with Razer service center to get this done.

I have tried playing Assassins creed origins, PUBG, Thief, frost punk, all at low settings. The PC keeps shutting down after 10-15 mins of gameplay. And this has been happening for the last 4-6 months now. I was also planning to do a repaste by myself, however I have no experience and was going to rely on these two links: 1. 2. https://closestnum20.com/razer-blade-pro-disassembly/

If anyone has a more detailed tutorial, please do pass it across, would be really appreciated.

I'm not sure what I should do.

I had the battery bulge issue as well, and have had it replaced under extended warranty coverage (HID Evolution). Since getting the machine back with a liquid metal repaste, I've had not a single issue. In fact, I don't even undervolt the CPU now since it runs very cold at stock voltage

I've debated pulling the battery to extend it's lifespan, but I recently installed Rainmeter and have been monitoring various system specs on my desktop. Under almost any gaming load, I notice that the battery will drain noticeably. It is clear that the system is pulling power from both the wall and the battery. It's not huge drain, but perhaps 15-20% after an hour of PUBG.

Like I said, I'm not running any undervolt at the moment, and I do have the GPU voltage curve modified via Afterburner. I always run the CPU power mode as "balanced" in Synapse to ensure clocks stay @ 3.6Ghz. Under load, per HWINFO, The GPU will draw ~150 Watts max and the balanced CPU power mode keeps CPU power draw in the 25-35 Watt range.

I'm guessing that your machine is shutting down due to inadquate system power. Perhaps you can test limiting the GPU to a lower powerdraw/clock speed to test system stability?

 

It can either be thermal shutdown from getting too hot (check temps) or power shutdown from not getting enough juice (check with power meter, I believe PSU is rated for 250W, drawing more than that can trip power shutdown).

Both can be improved with undervolting the CPU via throttlestop and the GPU via MSI afterburner. Liquid ultra can really, really improve temperatures. I use both, but I have a 7700/1060 RBP.

 

Thanks... I don't want to go the liquid metal route but surely wanted to do a repaste myself.. Just today I noticed that the keyboard lights were flickering, it might be a power issue... I do run my laptop on balanced mode as well. I shall check out undervolting for sure, but I read somewhere that a synapse script (Rzrperformance or something) nullifies these modifications.

 

Yes the temps do go above 90 degrees on both CPU and GPU. Just today I noticed the lights on the keyboard flickering while playing a game a few moments before it shutdown. I don't want to go the liquid metal route but I am really eager to do a repaste once. I'll check out under volting for sure.

 

Would you know where I can find a proper step by step tutorial for opening up the RBP motherboard?

 

I don’t know if such a guide, it is not hard as I did it without a guide, but you must be very careful, it is tricky to remove the fans with the motherboard, and the connector is very small and fragile

 

Yes, you need to disable that process to have full control. Afterwards, you can do what you want with XTU or whatever. With that process on, it will overwrite your changes.

Post LM, my temps are so low that I don’t bother with undervolting. My CPU was never very stable at a lower voltage also, so I’m not a good candidate for a modified power profile.

I do have a custom curve in Aftrburner, but this doesn’t seem to reduce power draw much, it just runs the clocks higher at lower voltages.

Gtx 1080/7820 RBP also has vapor chamber heatsink, should pair very nicely with liquid metal. Gtx 1060/7700 only had standard heatsink

 

Hey guys, thanks a lot for your replies. I was able to solve the problem by doing a simple re-paste job. I am able to run AC origins and other games without any issues now.
