Razer Blade (14 inch)... can the display use 1280x800 resolution? (plus bonus question! :D)

    Hi all!

I am in the market for a new laptop to show off the Oculus Rift with. I currently have and love my Alienware M11x R3, but it is just not powerful enough to show off Virtual Reality (very sad, I really wish they would not have canned the M11x line!). So here I am looking for another extremely portable gaming laptop that packs some nice power.. and the Razer Blade appears to be exactly what I'm looking for.

Now, when using my Rift on the M11x, I can't run it at 1280x800. This is what the Rift runs at, and when demoing the Rift, I need to clone the display so I can see what the user is seeing inside the rift (to make sure everything is running correctly!). Therefore, it's important for me to know if the Razer can display (with or without scaling) 1280x800.

Can anyone with a Razer 14 inch check it out for me? I would -greatly- appreciate it.

Bonus Question!: My plan would currently be to purchase the 128gb model and purchase a 256+ SSD on my own and install that (and use the 128gb ssd for my PC). Does the Razer Blade come with a Windows 8 CD or does it have a recovery partition? If so, I should be able to copy the recovery to a USB drive and use it to install on the 256gb? Either that, or I'll just install windows 7 and live with the non-working hotkeys :)

    Thank you VERY much!

I can see about trying my Rift this week. Still in its box.

Razer can provide a recovery USB stick for Win 8 (never tried ordering one), however you shouldn't need it. There is a second mSATA port, complete with screw, inside the Blade. It is also easier to access than the first port. Plug the new drive in, use Macrium Reflect free edition to clone the existing to the new, then change the boot order in the BIOS.

Oh perfect man, that's excellent info on the SSD stuffs. Thank you!

I would love to hear how the Rift plays with the Razer if you try it out later! (how on earth could you not crack open that Rift immediately! :D). If you get a chance, when you plug it in... clone the displays, make the RIFT the primary source. Check out 1280x800 resolution and see if you can clone with that... also... try and see if the Rift can run games at 1600x900. The rift downscales the resolution when you run games at 1920x1200 or 1920x1080.. this basically anti aliases the 1280x800 display on the rift and looks WAY better. If I could just run games on the rift at 1600x900 resolution, that would be perfect instead of needing to run 1280x800.

    Thanks a lot man!

Otherwize, don't know if you have your answer, but you can change the Blade's resolution to 1280x800 in Windows 8 settings (right click desktop -> Screen Resolution). Just checked.

Make sure to enable non-UEFI boot in the bios before changing hard drives. It would screw your Win7 installation.

Anyone have a suggestion on which SSD to go with for the best performance when going the route the op has suggested?
