So I have a 2014 Razer Blade 512GB and a 32" Dell UltraSharp 4K monitor. As we all know, the Razer Blade does not have a DisplayPort, and in order to run 4K at 60hz on an external display you have to use a displayport as opposed to an HDMI 1.4. I play World of Warcraft, which isn't the most graphics intensive game. When I play it on the actual screen of my Razer Blade (which runs 4k at 60hz), I average about 45-50 fps. But when I play it on my Dell Monitor, I top at at 30fps due to the 30hz refresh rate. The difference is night and day, at least to me.

My question is: Is there any possible way to get my Dell monitor to run at 4k/60hz with the Razer Blade as my GPU? (adapters, software updates/trickery, HDMI 2.0 cable, anything?) I'm just wondering if anyone out there has found a way to make this happen.

P.S. I have read about a NVidia update that is going to accomplish 4K/60hz via HDMI 1.4 by reducing the amount of color data to allow the bandwith of the cord to fit the data to process 4k/60hz. Anyone have any information about this? (when it is coming out, if it is real, and if I would be able to apply this using my setup)

Any help at all is much appreciated. Thank you!

I think you mean 3k on your internal screen ;) I don't think Razer made a 4k version.

I ran 4k over HDMI for a while on my 2014 Razer, and the only solution I came up with was forcing a custom resolution with a higher refresh rate. The highest I think I ever got at 4k was 33hz, so not much, but hey 10% wasn't bad I figured. I was using high quality HDMI cables (had several to try and one was better than the others). I was able to play many hours of Skyrim and other games at 33hz and got used to it, even though I prefer 60+ (previously used to 120hz desktop gaming)

One word of caution, the Intel drivers are finicky and you may need to run an older version to allow the custom resolution options to work properly. I've seen this on many laptops including my Y50 and P35X I currently have.

I don't know anything about any update like you speak of.

Ughhh i hate that there is no DisplayPort on the Razer Blade... And also you are right, the 3k display on my Razer Blade.... never actually checked the resolution, just assumed it was 4k :p

So the nvidia update that I was talking about, I did a little more research. Here are a couple links that explain it:

AnandTech | NVIDIA Kepler Cards Get HDMI 4K@60Hz Support (Kind Of)
Nvidia 340.43 Driver Allows HDMI 1.4 To Output 60Hz 4K UHD | eTeknix

From what I understand, this driver (that was released in June of this year, so no doubt all the newer drivers have it included) allows you to run 4k at 60hz with a simple change of settings through the Nvidia control panel. Only issue here is that the Blade uses Optimus technology, and therefore I don't have access to the display settings through the Nvidia control panel. From what I've read, you have to disable Optimus to enable diplay settings in Nvidia control panel, and the only way you can actually enable Optimus is through the BIOS. And of couse, the Razer BIOS doesnt give the option. WHY MUST THIS BE SO DIFFICULT!!! Lol.

Last question. What if I were to use a USB 3.0 to DiplayPort adapter? Now I know this would still only be 30hz, however if I were to hook up both the displayport AND the HDMI to the same display, I've read this can get you 4k 60hz. Any thoughts?

I don't know about using USB & HDMI, sounds like a mess to me. Honestly I would just do one of three things:

    1) Play at 1080p
    2) Play at 2560x1440 which works at 60 hz and looked great on my 4k display anyway (great in between resolution, much better than 1080, but not as hard to run as 4k)
    3) Play at 4k @ 30hz or so and enjoy (look at it this way, many console games are limited to 30 FPS but you're still getting much better graphics than console)

I did all of the above when I had my Razer depending on the game and what settings I could comfortably play at.

I'm struggling to figure out what game is going to run at 60fps on an 870M at 4K anyway. 30 seems fine to me, and actually realistic.

Mainly older games, like Skyrim and some of the COD's. Some newer games can play fine too if you dial down the options.
