This may be a USB 3.0 problem from what I've read, but my portable hard drive keeps disconnecting and reconnecting after times as short as 5 seconds. It rarely lasts for over 2 min or so before doing it, making it basically impossible to transfer any appreciable amount of data reliably on/off the computer. It usually does this when I'm trying to access some data (browsing pictures and watching movies), it won't disconnect and reconnect when sitting there idle.

I've tried some troubleshooting with the power settings, ensuring they don't turn off (which they aren't, drive has power the whole time). I tried my wife's portable drive and same things happens when I use it. I've tried all 3 USB ports, same results on every one. Both my portable and my wife's portable drives work on her MacBook Air perfectly, but I'm not sure if she had USB 2.0 or 3.0. Both cables are only an 18" cable that came with the drive, so I may try getting a better cable here soon to try it.

This is my first experience with USB 3.0, so if any of you have similar experiences and solutions, I'm all ears. If anybody is not having problems with their 2.0 USB portable hards drives connecting and staying connected, I'd also like to know.

Do you have it plugged in to an external power source? In my experience the Blade 14 USB ports don't supply enough juice to run most external devices. Even my 64gb jump drive won't connect unless I run it through a USB 3.0 powered hub. My external bluray drive requires me to use both plugs in its Y adapter or it won't work

My drive is a 1TB portable drive and it does not use an external power source. My wife's is an old 100 GB portable drive and is having the same issue. Is there a way to turn up the power output on the USB ports?

I'll test other external devices and see if they have any problems, though my headset and mouse have had no such problems, maybe a USB DVD player will.

Doubt there is a way to increase power. Try hooking up a powered USB hub and see if these devices then work properly
