Hi all. I was wondering if anyone here has gotten Need for Speed - The Run (2011) to work on the Razer Blade or any other system with Windows 8 or 8.1. I bought this game but can't get it to run no matter what I do. When you click to launch it the blue circle spins for a second but nothing happens. It also pops up in task manager for a split second before going away. I've tried doing compatibility troubleshooting and running as admin but nothing has helped.

I know the game is fairly intensive for an older game but it's not anything the Blade can't handle. Any tips? I haven't had this issue with any other games. Thanks.

No joy here, either. Too bad, game looked like lots of fun on the YouTube videos I watched. Like you, I tried all the compatibility mode combinations I could think of. Maybe something with 64-bit version of Windows? I also tried setting the default graphics adapter to Intel, but nothing works. As you said, it looks like the game is trying to start, but aborts before it even gets anything displayed on-screen.

Thanks for trying. I'm relieved it's not my Blade, but I'm bummed that it didn't work for you because I was hoping that you'd find a way to play this game. Oh well, glad I got it cheap.

So I found a bunch of clips of people playing on Windows 8.1 64 bit on YouTube. I no longer think its a compatibility with windows issue but rather an issue with the 870M and other newer cards having incompatible drivers. I tried installing an older driver from when the game came out but the driver won't work with the 870M. Don't see anyway to resolve this on my end. Maybe Nvidia will update the drivers to support the older game but I doubt it.

Well that's very disappointing. I didn't really look, but do you know if the newer NFS Rivals works? I haven't watched videos of it, but the videos for NFS The Run looked like so much fun.

You would think Rivals would work since it's so recent, but who knows. The Run isn't that old and some older games than that work just fine on the Blade, so I really don't get it. I used EA's chat support and they were useless because all they would say is that the game wasn't formally tested on 8.1 so they couldn't help -- even though I showed him links of people playing on 8.1 on YouTube. Posted on the Geforce forums in hopes that they would consider a driver update but that won't happen without a lot of complaints.

Edit -- I found a clip of someone playing Rivals on an MSI with an 870M so if you are thinking about picking that up you should be safe. Played that on a console and really liked it, which is why I had been excited to try The Run.

So through accidental happenstance I had to do a Windows refresh of my Blade. After it was done, I had to reinstall all of my programs, including Origin and Need for Speed: The Run. For some reason or another, it's now working! I noticed that I'm on an older driver (332.78) but other than that I don't know what would have changed. Anyway, happy it's working now. I know a system refresh is a pain but it would probably work for you if you are desperate enough to play this game.

If you install the latest nVidia driver does it stop working? You can always roll back if so. At least that would isolate the issue.

With some trepidation I went ahead and updated the GeForce drivers. The game still loaded and played fine. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes but the Windows refresh resolved whatever incompatibility the game had been having with my system.

FYI, once you get it running, you may run into problems with the game pad being detected. I'm using a dual shock 4 which typically runs without issue but required the x360ce controller emulator to work with The Run. Spent time getting the controller to work so I still haven't actually played the game yet.
