I just got the RB14 2013 and when you put your head to the keyboard you can hear a high pitched sound that sounds a lot like a HDD spinning but higher pitched. The sound is not constant, it fluctuates a bit, like a HDD, even when I'm just sitting on the desktop with nothing running.

I know there are no moving parts other than the fans, so I was wondering if this is normal?

Spinning fans make noise. The fans increase and decrease rotation speed, creating varying noise pitches, in response to increasing and decreasing system temperatures. The system could never be silent while it uses fans for cooling. Yes, its normal.

I'm familiar with fan noise and it doesn't sound like a fan to me (too high pitched). But I'll defer to your judgment. Just curious about the noise.

Pretty sure you're hearing coil whine. I've heard several 2013 blades with it. Sounds like a high pitched, often erratic, Morse code. If you want to test for it, get prime95 or run the intel xtu stress test. As soon as you start either test, the sound will go away or change (and then you'll hear the fans spin up.) I haven't heard a 2014 blade with coil whine yet, but I've only used one in person.

Well, neither my 2013 or 2014 model Razer Blade had coil whine, so I cannot say for sure thats not what you are hearing. Sounds like alaskajoel knows what he is talking about. Give his suggestion a shot and let us know what you find out.

Okay I did the stress test with the Intel XTU and the whine becomes more consistent and ramps up when I stress test the memory and the GPU. When I stress test the CPU, there is not a huge difference in the noise, as compared to idle. Does this indicate coil whine? If so, does the coil whine indicate anything wrong with the system or is it a superficial issue?

    Thanks for your help!

I am running a 2013 RB 14 too and have the same issue. I don't seem to hear this when running it on battery. It is only (barely) noticeable when on power supply but the volume of the noise does crank up when the notebook is on power supply and the battery is being recharge. The sound made by the machine sound very similar to the sound of a hard disk drive reading and writing. Also the power brick emits a light crick (kind of like the sound a cricket makes but much softer) which exacerbates when it has to both power the laptop and recharge the battery at the same time.

I too would like to know if it is normal. Ever though I must say I barely notice this unless I have my ears very close to the notebook which is not how I usually use it. Does it mean that there is something wrong with my RB and power brick? I rather not have to send it in for repair unless these sounds point to a bigger problem that might have a impact on the longevity of the system as a whole.

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer. I am certain both the OP and myself would greatly appreciate any help we can get on this topic.
