My battery is in a very bad state and I am in a situation where sending the whole notebook back to get it replaced would be very painful and complicated. I will probably still do it, but the longer I can delay the better. Some people suggested detaching the battery and since I pretty much only use it while connected to power (through a UPS so even power spikes or brownouts are unlikely) it seems like a good idea.

But I would like to be 100% certain that there would be no negative side-effects. For example, are there any functions (other than operating unplugged) that rely on the battery or anything that might break if the battery isn't in place?

Better yet, has anybody out there already removed his battery and used it without problems for an extended period of time?

I can't speak to heavy gaming, was it might still steal power from the battery in some extreme case, but I've used a notebook with defunct battery without issue so it *should* work. At your own risk.
