Hi guys has anyone ever had a problem with their 2013 razer blade 14 usb ports not recognizing an external hdd?

I currently use a seagate slim portable 500gb external hdd mainly use it for backing up my blade but for some reason it doesn't work on one of the usb 3.0 ports of my blade it doesn't even show up in my system when I plug it in.

This is a layout of the blades ports

    1. Power adapter
    2. Usb 3.0
    3. Usb 3.0
    4. Audio and mic combo jack

Number 3 the 2nd usb 3.0 port does not detect my seagate slim hdd BUT when I plug it in the other usb 3.0 ports it works fine it shows up instantly.

Also I have an external dvd writer and when I plug in the 2nd usb 3.0 port it works fine too!

I also plugged in my logitech performance mouse mx usb receiver in the 2nd usb 3.0 port and it works fine as well!

But when I plug in my seagate slim hdd in the 2nd usb 3.0 port it doesn't show up in my computer at all it just keeps blinking while on normal operation on the other usb 3.0 ports it doesn't keep blinking at all but just a steady light.

So I am totally at my wits end here it it my blade's usb 3.0 port that's not working or is it seagate slim hdd that's not working?

Sounds like the 2nd usb port is a bit short on power.

    That what I think too.
when I plug my phone on the second usb to charge my phone, it charge like 1 % in 1 hour. If I plug it to another usb port, it charge much faster( fully charged in 3 hours)
It s seems like the usb port that is charging when the blade is turned off is short in power when the blade is turned on.

are they anyway to test this?

If one of the USB ports is short on power as you suggest is it an RMA case or is there any driver issues I should be looking at to provide more power to the usb 3.0 port with a problem?

You don't need a driver for a usb port to output power.
PS: USB 3.0 should charge it faster than 2.0 (500mw from 2.0 900mw from 3.0)

This sounds like a manufacturing defect to me by all rights all 3 usb 3.0 ports should provide the same functionality on every level, so if one of my usb 3.0 is unable to power my external hdd then its a problem on razers end and warrants a replacement unit.

Interesting post. I have noticed issues with the same exact port as well!! It is odd, because the USB next to the HDMI and the USB next to the power plug do everything. The USB right next to the headphones jack on mine, I have noticed various issues as well. A few, but a specific example I thought was odd, is when I plug my Razer Ferox speakers into it, they make a click, click click noise. But when I use a different port, they do not. Also was having issues when hooking up my iPhone 5S. Only on the one port. Just odd the same port you are having issues with.......

Razer Blade support has confirmed with me before that the USB port next to the power adapter plug (port 2 in your initial post) does have more power than the rest. I guess that is the one that can be used with sleep and charge. (charge something when the laptop is off)

So does that mean that the number 3. second usb 3.0 port is unable to power an external hdd that seems a massive flaw to me if it's unable to provide power even though while my laptop is plugged in, sounds like a massive flaw in their design to me.

Agreed. It doesn't make sense to me either. Why would they give one USB port more power than Another? I don't get it. I think there is a design flaw, and that is their way of covering it up and not recalling thousands of laptops, possibly making them go bankrupt. No joke!

For example, I can charge my iPhone 5S (Yes, I prefer IOS over Android, come at me!) off of my Blackwidow Ultimate 2013 Pass Through on the USB next to the power port, but not the one next to the headphone jack. It just goes in and out of charging glitch mode style repeatedly if I use the port by the headphones.

I love my Blade, I really do. But if I had any patience at all (which I have -100) I would have just waited for the next revision. I am sure any and all issues will be resolved then. As well as a higher quality screen I can guarantee due to all of the negativity it has attracted.

On another note, I could not get support to confirm this, but I am betting that there is a 99% chance that these USB issues may be linked to the whole intel 87 chipset USB bug. Google it.

I am encountering the same issue. To combat it i just use the low power port for my usb mouse and the high power one for charging my phone. Mine is 50/50. Sometimes it will work sometimes it wont. Not right for sure but oddly, im ok with it. Its functional for what i use it for. And with warehouse repair rates id rather deal with a working low power usb port than a dented laptop.

I just realized this as well! Plugging in my OnePlus One Android phone to port (3) sends the system into a connecting/disconnecting fritz. The other two ports (closest to power port and HDMI port work perfectly fine).

In addition, when the RB is on sleep mode, the "weird" USB port (3), works perfectly fine and the charging of my phone is solid.

Is this intentional? Anyone with a RB2015 can confirm that this is still the case? I just want to make sure I don't have a defect on my laptop.

HOLY CRAP, My laptop (razer blade 2015 from amazon.com) does the same thing! The USB port closest to the head phone jack causes my external drive to stop working! But the other ports work fine. What is going on? Some one contact razer about this?

Using Ampere on my nexus 6 I see that the 3.0 port next to my headphone jack is putting out a max of 740mA. the USB port next to the power jack is putting out a max of 180mA.

if I factor in the 200-260mA my phone is using while powered on then one port is giving about 900mA and the other is giving about 400mA

Managed to fix it on my razer blade 2015, I went into the bios and disabled USB charging function. Every port works fine for now at least.

    Lol nvm. LOL

This is one of those times it would be really nice to know the changeset from the 2.24 to 2.27 BIOS.

You don't, Razer is pretty close to the vest on those.

This seems to be consistent across all Razer Blade versions. Surprised that Razer hasn't addressed this issue yet. They invested half a million dollars in making the USB ports green, you figured they could invest a bit more to make them fully functional.

Keep in mind, however, that only certain devices (certain phones, etc) will show this problem. A lot of people assume that their system is fine, when the device they are testing with isn't drawing that much power.
