Comparison with other UMPC's
and here a little matrix with all pro's and cons of of all these UMPC's.
Availability:
At the moment you can only buy it in the Netherland for a price of 599,- euro or in the UK for a price of 499,- pounds! Other countries and prices.. Don't know!
So let's talk about this crazy and little machine here...
-
Isn't there anyone that's interested in this superdevice...?
The last one is in comparison with my 14,1" http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=138893 -
erm... wheres the mouse?
-
You can see that on this underneath picture:
The touchpad is above the keyboard on the right side!
The mouse-buttons are above the keyboard on the left side! -
Nobody that likes it..?
-
Thanks for posting the pictures - much better than PCWorld etc's little pics.
I am curious about how using the touchpad works out - do you end up knocking the keyboard? - But then it looks so small your fingers are almost there already.
Have you tried connecting it up to a full sized monitor / digital projector via the DVI port and if so is it's output ok - I can see it being useful for running presentations. -
But I've started a topic on tweakers.net (it's Dutch)
http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1250105
and there are some users that already have got it!
A quote from that topic translated in English:
With FN & F3 you can switch trough intern, extern or both.
Small notice: De maximum output is 1024x768 but I think I need new drivers. -
Nobody that likes it?
Or is it just because you only can buy it in The Netherland and the UK? -
I like it much more than Asus eee PC and will try to buy one from my loca PCWorld for 350 quid (it's a current price). Price above 400 pounds is stupid
-
-
I've got it now for 350 quid - very nice toy - only 950 g! Like it to bits. Just need to install full microsoft office and off you go on the business trip. the lack of the optical drive hurts and battery life with wifi enabled is not huge but the size, the weight and full XP is brilliant!
-
Maybe you could make some reallife pictures?
Or maybe we can make something about...
I'll send the money to you and you buy one for me...
350 pounds is about 470 euro's (and the normal Dutch price is 530 euro's) -
I have just ordered one from PCWORLD.
Free delivery and 5% off with "you at work" online voucher
£330 delivered with 1gb mem and 30gb hard disk is way better then eee in my opinion
really looking fwd to it coming. -
-
I also think 4gb hardisk, with the potential failure rate of flash mem, put me off the eee.
the main opposition was actually the oqo 01+ (being sold off cheap by expansys at £405). but this has less battery life and 7" is better then 5" at least for watching movies.
rgds -
Dixons, Currys and PC World are now selling the xs20 for £349.99 delivered.
-
I agree with the comment on the xs being better than the asus, you can get memory upgrade and install xp on the asus, but it all adds to the cost, and then is still lower spec. Don,t know if anyone agrees, but the xs is a better looking machine, looks more like a laptop, than the asus which looks like a hardback book with hinges on!
-
I'm very interested in this thing. The biggest reason being the 30gig drive. The Eee simply does not have enough space for it to be a suable machine, imo.
The biggest problem i have with this thing though is:
-Lack of upgradability. Supposedly, you can upgrade the ram, but it requires you to totally dismantle the thing. If thats true, then this isnt an issue. You only really need to open it once to put 1 stick of 2gig sodimm ram in. If the current ram is soldered in though...
-They dropped the module slot that was going to hold a dedicated GPS device, travel clock, skype phone, or whatever you chose to drop it in.
-No longer a touch screen.(it probably wouldnt have been very useful, what with that hinge being incredibly light)
-Placement of the mouse. I dont know how ANYONE can like this. Sure, it makes sense if you use the thing in your hands, but what about when your at a desk? Put it in the standard location.
-Constantly rolling the launch date back for north america(was supposed to be Q1 '07.... then Q4'07... Then Jan 20th '08... Now its feb. 15 '08)
Btw, this is a pic of the prototype model. The one that, imo, looked flawless(other then the weak processor and ram.. but you cant really be picky when you're only paying ~$400)

Hi, got the xs20 last tuesday, nice little gadget but can any owners here tell me how long from switching notebook on it takes to actually log on to their internet provider, I,m running aol 9.0 with norton 360, but takes ages from powering on to log on to internet, approx 20 mins or more.
I know it,s only a 1.2 processor but surely it shouldn,t take that long? -
-
Thanks Bubba, seems like it was a security issue with norton, got it to log in quicker now.
Love this little xs20, touchpad mouse a little small, can get used to it though. The gap under screen is handy to carry the notebook from room to room, by hooking finger through the gap! -
The price in the Netherlands has reduced from 530 euro to 460,- (about 340 pounds)
Very nice price but I'm still looking for more reviews of the PB vs de Asus Eee!
We've got an Eee PC in the house and that's quite relaxed (also qua speed)
but it's from my mom that don't need more than 4GB of space / Bluetooth/ XP
I really love the design of this Packard Bell, and the 30GB HD, Bluetooth and XP, but in the comparisonreviews I've read, they're saying that the processorpower of this Packard Bell isn't quite as good as the Eee PC ones...
Somebody can confirm this..?
I really want to buy it for a price of 460,- (our from HongKong imported Asus Eee PC 4G costed 450,-) but I don't want to lose the power that I'm used... -
I was in the same position, the xs20 dropped to 350 pounds as opposed to 450 or so a couple of weeks ago.
I have not used the asus 4g, but after carefull consideration went for the xs20 and glad I did, at present the 4g can be bought here as low as 218 pounds from shopbt.com
But I can,t see how a 900 processor on the asus can be faster than the 1.2 on the xs, as you say, the hd, 30g memory, bluetooth and pre-installed xp is well worth the extra, I,m chuffed to bits with the xs, also the design makes the xs easier and safer to hold, having the gap under the screen is a great way of holding the device. Hope this helps you decide -
You don't only have to take a look to 900MHz versus 1200MHz...
It are two different processors so 900MHz hasn't to be less powerfull...
If you check this link:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile...ornote=0&or=0&search=&sort=sorting&type=specs
You can see:
The Via-processor in the Packard Bell is at place: 199
The Intel-processor in the Asus Eee is at place: 188
Offcourse I know that is only a little difference
with 200 places but just to let you know...
What do you think of the Packard Bell speed delcam?
Starting the laptop doesn't matter to me (2 minutes is fine)
but when it's on it has to work just fine and I don't want to
wait a minute to open internet explorer/ to open word and so on...
(at the moment I haven't got any money and I want to save something
for the SonyEricsson XPERIA X1 that's coming, but I'm still thinking of
buying a Packard Bell EasyNote XS20 in stead of a Asus Eee 8G (or higher) -
-
i seen the vids and actually like it.of course with the price it started out with i wouldnt have got it,but now i see it at pc world for 35£ which isnt bad. i guess you pay for the full xp and extra 512 of ram.
im gonna still wait till around the summer or so and see wot else comes out.if the asus comes with full xp and 1gb ram then i might go there lol.
thanx for the vids and pics etc -
You're Welcome -
Hi CLB-NL.
Could you link all my pics back to where they came from please. I'm happy for people to use some of the pics but i'd prefer people came to my site for the full gallery.
Regards
Steve. -
I'm afraid that's too much work...
People can see that they are from UMPC-portal.com so...
And why are you asking me this publicly.. And don't email / DM me...
And I wanted to say that the Cloudbook is released
Just the same as the Packard Bell EasyNote XS20 (only 512MB vs 1GB RAM)
but it doesn't have Windows XP installed on it, but socalled gOs:
gOs is a sponsored (by Everex) Linux-distribution, optimalised for Google Apps.
