Hello, I have a packard bell TM85 laptop with an i5- 430M processor and 4GB of RAM.
I would like to know if it is possible to replace the i5 430M with the i7-740QM. they have the same Socket
only slightly different power consumption.
I am aware of the fact that my battery life will decrease, but 90% of the time i am running from the wall so its not a problem.

the real question is will the TM85's BIOS support other processors. i'm more of an ACER person, but to find out if your laptop will work with other processors the most effective way is to check and see if there are files such as CHANGELOG.TXT that details what changes were implemented with each different bios version. you may even have to go back to the first BIOS file's information file (assuming PB posts such info with the bios update files.... that's one thing ACER was really good about.)
if you can't find the info you need, then i would email tech support for PB. you should be able to find that info in your users manual or by doing a google search for "packard bell TM85 tech support" and in your contact with them ask what CPUs the latest BIOS supports, and also ask if any older versions of the BIOS supported other processors as manufacturers often remove unused BIOS code to make room for newer options or correct problems as required by users. -
Thanks for the response,
But i figured everything out my self.
PB and acer laptops are very similar, basically TM85 and Aspire 5741 are the same machine.
I even flashed an unlocked Aspire 5741 bios to my TM85 and every thing is fine.
I eventually upgraded my laptop to an i7 720QM, and got my self 8GB of 1333MHz 1.35V RAM.
My PC consumes less power now on idle then previously but on max performance the i7 eats up a tone of energy.
In some extreme cases my battery can't handle the load and my PC crashes(if i take out the battery it does not happen).
now i am thinking of upgrading the battery. BTW most of the acer Aspire laptops use the same battery that i do in the PB laptop.
I would like to know if a stronger 80Wh(11.1V ~ 7.8Ah) 9 cell battery can damage my PC, that uses a 6 cell 48Wh(11.1V ~ 4.6Ah) battery? -

the only difference in a 6 and 9 cell battery is length of battery life. if you notice both batteries are putting out 11.1 volts the Amp hours is just a rating of how much MAX energy it can put out in an HOUR, not how much it is going to be constantly putting out.
9 cell is the way to go!
CPU upgrade
