i had my av3220h1 for the last 48 hrs, i love it. i browse the user manual, and it said something like battery calibration for 1st use and ... every 3 months. i am doing the battery calibration now...and it has been running for close to an hr and of course, one cannot use the computer! has anyone done this battery calib thing? is it necessary? and, is it really, i have to lose use of the laptop for 1-2 hr every 3 months? that does not sound good.

i finished training the battery and the fan. the battery training took several hours (overnight) and the fan training took under 5 min.

is it necessary to do those thing every 3 mons? the manual say so.

my understanding from the pdf manual is that the battery calibration calibrates the battery meter to the operation of the battery. That is, it is supposed to make the battery meter more accurately reflect remaining power. I haven't done it because it seemed not that critical. if you find out otherwise, let me know, I would be interested.

did you change the fan setting through the BIOS? You can apparently switch on "auto learning", but I haven't changed this setting from off, and I can't say the fan is running unneccesarily and at any other time than when the computer is warm. Averatec 3220H1, very happy with it!

Why does the fan have to be calibrated every three months?

If I understand correctly what has been said about calibrating the battery, if has will not do anything to improve the capacity????

    thanks.

I heard that a battery needs calibrated once a month (maybe more, depends on who you talk to) because the "gas guage" in a battery gets skewed some after periodic partial charges and whatnot. By running it down and charging it all back up, it re-calibrates it so the battery knows the true capacity.

Just what I read, may wanna have a battery expert add to this thread. Very interesting though.

So, regarding the battery, calibrating is not like conditioning?

Calibrating does absolutely nothing for improving capacity, like conditioning does for other rechargeable batteries. Does letting the battery completely drain, then recharging it, work like conditioning?

Also, I'm still wondering what calibrating the fan does. Anyone know?

Editorial comment: I think the battery on my one month old (or there abouts) 3270 really sucks; it's lost a lot of capacity in that short time and we hardly ever use the battery. The reviews of this laptop before I bought it, all touted the Averatec as such a good value...well not if you have to buy a new battery often to get any decent power. My son-in-laws brand new ibook gets up to six hours. I can't even watch a full length, 1 1/2 hour DVD.

    thanks
