In my normal run to Dynamism to see what's new (almost everyday), came across a new Sharp Mebius (CV50F): http://www.dynamism.com/cv50/

    Quick Specs:
    Transmetta Efficeon TM8600 @ 1ghz
    256 / 512 MB for Memory
    20 GB HD
    16MB Radeon
    WXGA Screen
    USB 2.0
    CompactFlash
    SD Slot
    Integrated WiFi and LAN

    ....not impressed

I just can't understand why Sharp is trying so hard to avoid mass markets. It seems like all of their computing products are geared toward very specific niches. Maybe they feel like selling one at full MSRP is better than ten at a discount.

I don't know much about the history of Sharp relative to laptops. I wonder if maybe they market to more enterprise users rather than mass marketing. I notice this with the OQO and the Antelop uPCs. All the literature and info seem to be more geared towards larger corporations that would probably design thier own software solutions for the platform. In one respect, it's a smart strategy. In my company, we use Compaq DeskPros @ 1ghz loaded with W2K (some with WXP) and our proprietary systems. As a corporation, we payed $10,000 for each machine. Similarly, the same machine was offered for personal purchase on an internal site, brand new, for around $1500 at the time. It would seem to me that manufacturers know they can unload a product, at least at cost, to business users. Just my thoughts, probably far off the mark.

I think Sharp makes some of the best screens that I have ever seen. I just wish that Sharp would become more popular, but evidently is hasen't been becoming so. Maby, in a few years they will make it to the mass market. Hopefully! [ ;)]
