sweet. it's weird that the notebook has a Sempron icon next to it on that page, and if you go into the little product introduction thing it says it has a Sempron, not a Turion. But then on that same page it has Turion configurations and a little description of the technology.

Am I missing something? Can you have a chip that is both Sempron and Turion? I thought they were just names for different types of processors

now if only there was a place to buy it, that would be good.

I know that it is available in Costco stores but not on their website. Go to www.averatecforums.com and talk about this model.

Costco? like what kind of store is that? is it an actual chain store or is it just a supplier? and this laptop is perfect for me, so i'm going to have to check into any online places to buy.

They are a club store, you have to buy a membership. I saw one of the all white Averatecs. I thought they looked pretty good.

Oh, its like Sams club! they probably go from the same wearhouse. My sams club has an averatec or two, and right now they have a deal $750 for a 3200 with a sempron 2800+ in it. so i'm betting they are just trying to clear those out so they can get in like the 2100's hopefully.

Costco is like a bulk wholesaler. Its kind of like Superstore, and you can pretty much get free lunch from their food samples :p But they do have eletronics (laptops)...

yes, exactly like sam's club, which is probably the same warehouse-type but is backed by walmart.

I just went to Costco and looked at the Averatec 2100. It appears to be a rebadge of the MSI S270. It is a nice looking notebook but not very user friendly for upgrading ram or harddrive.

Well this kinda sucks. I am really interested in this computer, but the nearest Costco is about 40 miles away from me. How does this work?? Can you look around in there if you don't have a membership, and then get a membership if you like what you see?? If this laptop is around $1000, I will go ahead and get a membership to buy it. But I don't want to drive all the way out there to find that they don't have any, or won't even let me in without a membership!!

You need to be a member to get in, at least for my Costco.

Yeah, I found that out shortly after I posted :/

Anyway, I want to get my wife a 12" notebook for Christmas, and this appears to be the only other lappy that fit her requirements for around $1000 except the Dell 700m. She was sold on this, until I realized it has no S-vid output. That is a MUST. So back to the 700m I guess, which is too bad, cause she REALLY liked this one!!

$1050 is kinda expensive for this lappy at averatecshop

i just built one similar (and better) to av2150 for about 859 (no tax, shipped and about 1-2 hours putting the parts together)

    s270 barebone (a ms 1013 + mini pci wifi)
    512mb ddr 400 ocz cl2.5 ram
    turion 64 mt32 (1.8ghz)
    80gb hdd

dvd burner and other stuffs are included with the barebone, of course.

i would get her the dell 700m rather than the averatec as averatec is not really reliable--poor customer service, sum screen cracking issues and just overall poor build quality
the dell700m ofcourse doesn't have top-notch build quality but way superior than the averatec. good luck

The DVD burner is included with the barebone?? I didn't even realize that. Maybe I'll look into doing that myself. I always figured it was more expensive to go that route

Yeah ... where? $859 is a good deal! Just wonder if it has DVD burner built in. Still, one can get a DVD burner for $80 or so. So its not too big a deal I must say. :)

EDIT: Here's one that has the barebones for (Black model) $666.99 and pearl white for $630.99. I wonder if $200 can get you the extra CPU, ram and hdd? The DVD burner seem to be part of the barebones deal already.

How are you supposed to get warranty/tech support when you build your own laptop from barebones system?

I see this link offers a 3 yr warranty, but does that cover the other components you add to it? Also, this model weights 8.1 lbs, so I guess it would not fit my needs for ultraportability.

hahaha ... these vendors really make me laugh. I believe that is the shipping weight and not the notebook itself.

To make a 12.1" notebook weight 8lbs at this age ... *shiver*

I guess the other components' warranty will be according to the retailers you got them from.

The 3yr warr is for the barebones it came with. :)

I have one, definately NOT 8.1 lbs... That MUST be the shipping weight!

Anyway, many of the MSI Barebones model owners have joined up in the Averatec 2100 forum:
    http://www.averatecforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=27

Lots of good info for would-be buyers.

So soulf2, do you know where to get a deal on the MSI barebones?

Everyone seem to talk about it, but no one is telling! ;)
