i've heard that there is no DVI Out on the IFL90, is this correct and does that mean that you can't plug in an external monitor such as a 17" or 19" LCD instead of the laptop screen

you can use the regular monitor port. for a 17 or 19" lcd, it is totally sufficient. You will prefer a DVI out if you hvae a much larger lcd screen.

eghm, today everyone can afford 22'' monitor, so DVI or HDMI is a must, it's year 2007 and geforce 8 is out, what are they thinking?

Its disappointing to me too. There is a compromise no matter which laptop you get. Right now, it looks like the IFL90 competes with the Asus G1S. I think I'm willing to give up HDMI and use an express card e-sata adapter when I need it for a more professional package and longer battery life. I can understand chosing the Asus G1S though.

I agree that it is disappointing to be missing the DVI-D output on a notebook. Hopefully that and HDMI will be more mainstream in the future.

As mentioned, you can run an external monitor on analog. I've done it when I had to--I even run a 22" display off of integrated graphics at work and it looks fine.

And yes, there is always going to be some sort of compromise when it comes to choosing your next notebook. Very few actually have the chance to buy one that has everything they want or are looking for.

I run two Samsung 22" external monitors side by side off of my laptop for a total of 3 screens.

One of them is connected to my VGA port and the other to my VTBook PCMCIA video adapter with DVI out. I simply cannot see any difference.

I have also connected them to other laptops with DVI and even HDMI ports...I cannot see any substantial difference in side by side tests.

I've connected my desktop to my 50" LCD projection via VGA, and it looked just fine in my opinion. I haven't had the luxury of connecting via HDMI or DVI at all though. I do wish it was a standard for both those connections, but I am confident I will be happy enough with just the VGA.
