So when its closed and you turn it upside down, does it fly open?

I dont think it will really be a problem... after all, the latch tension should be enough to hold it down. but really, what does it matter? Most of the time it will be on a desk, lap, or in a bag that will hold the screen down anyway

Its the little things that count :)

But if its relying on hinge tension wouldn't that eventually loosen to some extent? Then will my lid might be flop'n around?

theoretically yea. but lets think. by the time that happens then your laptop would probably be quite quite old. or youve been opening/closing your laptop way too much haha.

That doesn't make it good now does it. Let me illustrate with the use of good old rhethorics: if mr joe schmoe (substitute with known specimen here) jumped off of a bridge, would you do it?

Ofcourse not, don't even try and answer differently anyone ;-))

Just because someone else is doing it, it doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I personally like the hinge approach and I feel that so far as I've seen the FL90 VBi I must say my EL80 seems a bit more sturdy :/ That's a loss indeed, but I will wait for FL90 v2 :) The one with TPM that is, might be a bit stronger too, as regards the physical build ;)

As regards the hinge tho, it sticked pretty well I must say, I tried it it's almost scary at first how hardly it closes, I worried for the LCD right away :D But it really does seem to hold tight, like with a magnet. Perhaphs there is magnets in the hinges somewhere? Dunno. It's not gravity as in, if you flip it, it will open. It's hinge magic, not gravity. You can close it upside down, and it will still 'snap' closed. That's how it works, it just snaps closed at some point, like with magnets.

    Cheers.

I trust hinge magic more than I do gravity.

i think it's a little mixture of hinge magic and gravity. i just like the gravity answer because when you put it upside down the lid kind opens up a lil bit. but sideways it doesnt because their is still enough force keeping the lid down.

HP's are latchless, and I love it. I sincerely doubt they will loosten with time, I used a dv2000 for 3 months and the hinges are no less tight now than they were when I first got it. The strength of these hinges was best described as 'you'll pick up the notebook before you open it with one hand.' Its no joke, they hold tight, especially when it is closed. After getting the lid halfway open they loosten, there must be some kind of variable tension spring going on or something, and I don't expect the technology to fail anytime soon, or they would have just put a latch in.

Yeah, the FL90 I played about had the similar thing as your hp, basically they're strong at the near-closed status and then they loosen up as you gradually open them. It's not a gradual loosening tho, you just get past a point where they are loose or they tighten up.

    Hinge magic.

ok so while attempting to fix my top panel of buttons and leds justin told me to pop open the top part of the laptop where the hinge is. my problem wasn't fixed but i did possibly gleam some information from it. there appears to be, along with a spring, a little magnet looking object in the hinge. i'm not entirely sure its a magnet or if its the reason for its closing but thats what i saw. i wish i had the camera handy to take pictures but its in my rents room and they're sleeping

This seems like a good thread to ask this question:

Is the lid of the laptop scratch prone? I am getting a case for it, but I was wondering if I need to also buy a skin or something to protect the lid from getting scratched.
