So i hard booted and plugged in an exeternal monitor and it lookedl ike it was going to work. there were a bunch of lines on the screen but i get to the point where i load up windows and it just stops... i can hear it load up but then nohing shows up on my plugged in monitor
The video card fan is still going.... and im booted i'm in safe mode right now but there are some purple lines and crap everywhere.
Is this the video card dying?
what are my options could i buy another one to replace it or do i have to buy a new laptop now
    thanks
oh... i'm i nsafe mode right now using the computer...

*** purple lines are gone now
Ok the main screen is now wokring again and i can bootup windows normally again....

sounds like it could probably be the:
    - videocard, lcd cables, and/or lcd panel.

    most likely the videocard though....

when was the last time you cleaned out your vents and fans (from clogged dust)... if never, then that is probably the reason why it might have failed at this time.

and I hope you have been good about monitoring your temps, which would give you the warning to start cleaning out the system.

you can contact your vendor to see what they think with your symptoms... and the price of the repair or part.

Well the vendor was milestones pc an di think danny ed off right?
i guess it's been awhile since i have cleaned it but not sure
anyways i got it to turn on again and it turned off once the fan went high speed
    so what does this mean?
just clean it and should be ok? dead vid card? cause it still works perfect but just when the fan goes to high speed it turns the screen off.

Check to see that windows didn't do an automatic update on your video drivers. and what video card do you have. Nvidia cards like to do this.

you gotta clean out the vents (most important) and fans at least once a month for gaming notebooks.

sounds like the videocard is probably damaged physically from overheating if the fans goes to max right away.

check the temps if you can.

but it looks like it might be too late...

    its a 7600 go i think
no it takes like 15 minutes for the fans to go max or speed up
until then it works perfect... only did it once before it turned the screen off again.
ill check the temps tommorow if i can even get it done
i gotta find the tools too open it and clean it and ill see.

read the ending of my Clevo Guide for a generic way to clean out the dust for almost all notebooks.

I guess there would be no way of replacing a dead video card on this laptop is there?

    yes you can replace it.

the videocard is a separate board that can be removed and swapped.

... the main issue is to find the same one to replace since its not a standard videocard module.

that last time I saw someone selling HEL80 parts that included the videocard was:

yeah... i guess it would be better to look for one than find a new laptop... dont really have the money to be doing that right now.
what would i be looking for just a straightup 7600 go mobile replacement?
    i have the WXGA+ one

hey would one of those external USB to VGA things work?
the cmoputer works perfect and i have LCds kicking around so i was tihnking of giving my laptop with one of those to my dad if i cant fix / find another video card.
He's still using a p3 533 so if one of those would work that'd be great... the comp still runs fine just no video card now :-(

that could work, but the internal videocard is more important because if it dies, the notebook wont boot properly.

I told myself awhile back that i would never own an acer mainstream laptop but i guess i'm short on cash right now. But i guess if i wasnt stupid for the last 2 months i'd still have my compal

the Acer should do fine for you, just make sure to watch its CPUs temps and remember to clean out the vents regularly.

Thats a pretty good spec'ed notebook... will outperform you old HEL80 by a bit as well.

But the site shows its Out of Stock.

If you can still get it, that would be good. :)

I think i'm going to wait a month for WWDC and see if the macbooks get any upgrades otherwise ill just get a eurocom or something. Everything besides that gateway is such a ripoff... it seems that asus specs for the price are absolute crap right now. so if i'm going to spend 2 grand on a laptop i'd want something better than a 130m gt.
I figure in a month i can get something with a 9800 gts. EIther that or i'm gonna get another compal

that M860TU is a good choice... a bit overpriced compared to some other vendors with better specs. (read the Clevo Guide)

if you are going to spend $2k CAD....

here are my current "bang for the buck" high-end 3D/gaming notebook picks....
    (with 256-bit memory interface videocards)

(prices are in USD, just convert them to CAD)

    For 17"+
    *(sub-$1500 budget)*
    - .Dell .M1730 ...... liquidation + SLI 9800M GT's = consumers win :) (get the cheapest config with SLI and buy your own CPU/RAM)
    - Gateway P FX .... with 9800M GTS is another good choice but does not have better build quality than other some other alternatives
    - MSI GT725 .... fully loaded 17" with ATI HD 4850
    *($1600 to $2000)*
    - Clevo M570ETU (aka. Sager NP5797) .... new model with Montevina, quad-core and choice of GTX 280M or 9800M GTS/GT/GTX or Quadro 2700M
    - ASUS G71G-Q2 .... the Q2 makes the list since its fully loaded with Nvidia 9800M, Q9000 quad-core CPU, and Blu-ray drive
    - Arima W840 DI (aka. OCZ Whitebook, Alîenware m17, etc...) .... new 17" dual ATI 3870, quad-core and dual HDD
    *($2000+ budget)*
    - Clevo M980NU (aka. Sager NP9850) ..... new 18.4" with mobile Intel quad-core CPU and dual Nvidia GTX 280M (in SLI)
    - ASUS W90Vp .... 18.4" fully loaded with ATI HD 4870 X2 .... make sure to get a quad-core to make it worth it
    - Clevo D901C (aka. Sager NP9262) .... 17" with single/dual 9800M GTS/GT/GTX or Quadro 2700M/3700M, uses desktop quad-core CPUs, three internal HDDs, and the best notebook cooling design.
    - Clevo D900F/D901F (aka. Sager NP9280) .... new 17" with Intel Core i7 support, Nvidia GTX 280M (or new Quadro), three internal HDDs, and the best notebook cooling design like its predecessor.

    For 15"
    *(sub-$1400 budget)*
    - ASUS G50VT .... 15.6" with 9800M GS (budget high-end card)
    - MSI GT627 .... 15.4" with 9800M GS (budget high-end card)
..... and the rest of the mid-range notebooks with Nvidia 9600M/9650M, ATI 3600/3650, etc..
    *($1400+ budget)*
    - Clevo M860ETU (aka. Sager NP8662) .... fastest 15.4" gaming notebook with Centrino 2 quad-core CPU support... and Nvidia 9800M GTS / GTX 260M / Quadro 2700M

Alîenware (except for M17 which is re-branded Arima W840) and .Dell does not make the list (mainly for the high-end systems), they are quite outdated and configuration upgrades are usually overpriced.

This is a bang for the buck list... if you want to pay for aesthetics and lights, then look elsewhere.

    * please read the Clevo Guide for further information about Clevo and their international vendors.

how are the msi builds? i've never had / seen one.
I like that clevo... bit on the very upper end of my price range but you cant argue with what you get for a solid build. think the price would drop at all in the next little bit?

    Hi..I can`t believe it..

The same thing happened to me...

I have a compal hel80i with nvidia geforce go 7600..

Suddenly my screen went black and I had to switch off the power..

Now all I got is a blue screen with error message about nvlddmkm.sys..its probably something to do with nvidia driver.. Now my solution is to start in safe mode, disable my graphic card and just install a standard vga card in windows vista.. It is not good quality and resolution is only 1024 x 768.. But The computer is at least working..

When I tries to install the video card with newest nvidia geforce go 7600 driver, all I get is stripes on the logo at my start up screen , and there is grey stripes in the background at vista start up screen, and then it goes to blue screen with error message..

I have also installed win7 rc, and the problem is there too..

But why did this happen to you and me as well.. my computer is over 2 years old..how old is yours?

Yeah over 2 years old maybe 3 years.
how did you install a standard vga card and boot up at that resolution?
wondering cause i was thinking of just giving the laptop me dad if i could make it show up on screen with any resolution because he is on a P3533 right now.
Did you try using older drivers yet?

    1. boot up in safe mode
    2. uninstall graphic card in computer management and click yes to "remove installation files" or something like that. (this is important)
    3. restart computer
    4. Now try to boot in normal mode
    5. Now windows will detect a new device and try to install it. If you deleted the installation\drivers in safe mode windows will try to find the drivers via windows update.. If you can, un select that update..
    6. Now windows should install your video card as "standard vga card"
    7. in display settings, choose 1024 x 768 instead of 800 x 600..

If this doesnt work, you can do a workaround.. In safe mode, disable your graphic card and restart the computer in normal mode..And then choose your resolution..

I have tried to use only newest drivers from nvidia.. I will try with an old driver, but think it will not work..
Have also tried to use "ubuntu" or "slax" but they will not work..

no..but you must manually change resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768 in windows after you do the things I have described on the list..

sungram, the same thing happened to me a few days ago. Reinstalling windows xp and drivers doesn't fix the problem.

ubuntu lets me use 1024x800 but still can't access the video card
