I recently purchased a Compal HEL80, and other then 1 rather major issue, its going great.

I have not managed to download a single executable file without it being corrupted. Small files seem to work fine, but after about the 10 meg point, Nothing ever works.

I thought it might be a problem with the OS at first, I tired reinstalling network drivers, but no luck. I then reformatted the hd, and reinstalled windows XP. Then I installed only the newest network card driver from realtek. No Luck.

I'm not sure what bios version I'm using, as the laptop is currently formating again (ended up trying to install video drivers I downloaded on that machine ... baaaad idea). I haven't seen the problem elsewhere after several hours of google searches. Have any of you ever heard or know a solution to this problem?

    Thanks in advance.

I'll post my bios version once I get that far.

    EDIT: --BIOS version is 114B

I've seen this happen before and I had the same problem, but it was caused by FTP-like problems on the ISP's side of the connection. You might want to give them a call.

Hmmm, I don't think its the ISP's fault because I have *count* 5 other machines in this house, that all work perfectly. I don't see the ISP having an issue with one computer in particular

You tried downloading the same EXE on those computers right? Try getting them all to download a 10+MB file.

You try using a different browser? (Make sure a different engine, like Firefox or Opera)

Done both, and no luck. I'm almost sure the problem is not software related now, could be firmware, but that doesn't seem right since no one else has this problem.

I installed vista, and the problem persists, but I now also have frequent BSOD's, with MEMORY_MANAGEMENT as the error. Failing Harddrive or Ram possibly?

Hmmm...run MemTest86 to find out. That sounds like RAM.

    I second a test of Memtest86..

You can also try to remove the memory if you have more then one stick, and try each stick one at a time.. Also make sure they are seated firmly.

Tried that, it looks like its a faulty stick of ram, running on one 512 stick now.

All I can say is ... Thank god its not the mobo.

Edit: Would someone post the type of Ram this notebook needs? I'm assuming its 200 pin DDR2 667, but conformation would be nice. Also, I've never had a problem running different brands of ram in the same pc, do the same rules apply for Laptops? And one final question, does the HEL80 Support Dual-channeling?

Glad to hear you found the cause of your anguish!

Hopefully you can get in touch with your reseller and have them cross-ship you a stick of memory so you aren't without your machine. :)

any brand is fine, and yes, it does support dual channel, though you wont notice much of a difference with it anyway. the ram is DDR2 SDRAM 533/667 MHz, PC4200 or PC5300 Modules.
