As the subject states, is it possible to get a Compal IFL90 with a LightScribe DVD burning drive?

And is the Nvidia 8600 GT truly a lot better than the Nvidia 8600 GS? It did not look extraordinarily superior in the benchmark tests (although I could be reading it wrong). What will the real world difference be between the two?

Are you sure you want LightScribe? You pay a premium for the drive and then a premium on blank media. There are decently priced inkjet printers out there that can print on DVDs. From what I understand, the quality is better than LightScribe.

LightScribe is not available from the manufacturer, but you could buy another drive if it is that important to you.

Most people have found that LightScribe is too slow, and the media too expensive, to be really worth it and that is why you don't see it very much anymore.

Yes the GT has twice (32 vs. 16) the Stream Processors (engines) so while you may not be impressed with the synthetic benchmark scores you will be impressed with not only the difference in performance while gaming, but also the eye candy will be sweeter.

I just use a sharpie. But if you really want it, I'm sure you could request your notebook be sold with no optical media drive, then buy one yourself somewhere else.

Right, I use a sharpie most of the time.

Still, it might be worth thinking about a printer that can print on DVDs if you are thinking of getting a new printer. My wife wants a printer to print out the photos she takes with the digital camera I gave her 2 years ago for her birthday. I'm going to buy her a printer for her birthday this year. (Yeah, I give hi-tech gadgets to my wife. I'm lucky that she's just as happy with gadgets as with jewelry.) I've specifically looked for a printer that would print on DVDs. Printing on DVDs is not something we will do very often, but once in a while it would be nice to be able to do it. I thought about LightScribe and similar technologies but decided against it.

hmm, indeed it may be slow, expensive in usage, worse in picture quality compared with printers... but it looks so cool! ;-) it has a certain pro look imho, jokes aside, and I'd be much more impressed with the medium's look had some say artist passed out his work on lightscribed discs rather than printed on a printer and stuck on them on paper... unless you can print directly to the medium, i haven't seen ones like that, come to think about it, I guess there was something lke that already on the market? I guess I should investigate, it's not like I need it for everyday but extra info won't hurt I guess ;)

    cheers

You can print directly on the DVD or CD. Printable media is more expensive than non-printable media. However, LightScribe media is more expensive than media you can print on just using an inkjet printer. I also find the quality of inkjet printing to be better than LightScribe.

huh, looks nice. and the extra paint from the printer doesn't cause the medium to loose it's weight balance -> shorter drive life-span?

I think lightscribe doesn't cause such weight differences as the ink might.

something to look into I guess :)

    cheers,

Call me stupid, but I don't think the ink will make any difference.

Possibly. Still, as has been pointed out earlier in this thread, if you have a printer that can print on CDs and DVDs directly, what you need are CDs and DVDs made for printing. No sticker needs to be applied by human hands.

Yeah, stickers will 1) throw the disc off balence and 2) might peel off in the heat.

Another thing with the printable media you have to take in to consideration is the ink you'd be useing.
