So when I put a software CD in the drive, it doesn't automatically boot into the installation screen. Likewise, putting an audio CD or DVD in there doesn't bring up the option to decide which program to use to open it, like it usually does.
Yet the drive seems to be working fine and plays everything. I just have to do it manually. Any ideas what's going on?

Fixed it! Even though Autoplay seemed to be enabled for my CD drive in Windows, I downloaded this program, which checks autoplay settings:
http://www.cdmenupro.com/autorun/autorun-check.htm
and it seems the setting for "CD ROM" wasn't checked. Even though everything seemed to be enabled in Windows. Hmmmm. These things are sent to test us. -
windows is being stupid. I have had this happen before. Try looking for anything related to autoplay which is somehow disabled for you.

That's the best way of putting it I've heard. Windows is being stupid. How very true. Gah, it seems like instead of being 100% productive with my computer as I should be, I spend 60% or so of my time in various computer/Windows related problems. Always consulting forums. Calling tech people. Googling things I never thought I would be Googling in a million years.
Sometimes you just never find a solution. Sometimes when I'm typing text, the cursor will just suddenly jump up to halfway through the last paragraph. For no reason. Other times, Num Lock will activate itself suddenly when I've been nowhere near the button.
I read somewhere that the fault rate in the computer industry is 75% or so, meaning 25% of all computers are faulty. They're pretty happy about this rate. I don't think we'll ever see a time in which computers are flawless. Our desire to advance will always outpace our ability to advance without error.
