    hi all,

I have just come back from a computer store and checked out the laptop that I was intending to buy next week (Asus W3V).

But as I was looking at it, I noticed the BenQ s72 v35 next to it, and my attention just went to that.

Of course, I did the smart thing and walked away. First things first - one must search the internet for reviews.

Problem: I cannot find any reviews!!

Can anybody who has come in contact with the BenQ s72 v35 or any near model, tell me how it is?

Would you recommend BenQ over Asus W3V? Why/why not?

If neither is good, what would you recommend instead?

    The specs I want are:
14", lightweight, at least 512mb, at least 40gb, good graphics card, screen, sturdy, ... the rest is whatever.

    Thanks.

    mmmhh
I guess the dounside to the BenQ s72 is the battery - (6 cell) whereas W3V is 8 cell.

But I don't get it? The guy told me 4.5 hours.... whereas W3V is 3.6 hours.

Can somebody clear my mind please?

The 4.5 hours is probably from BenQ and likely optimistic. Since they are not sold in the States, I have not seen one.

The previous versiopn of JB s72 - joybook 7000 - manages more than 3.5 hours on a battery. Some review said that the battery time of S72 is smaller because of the Sonoma platform used. Otherwise, I can only advice the model because of its really sturdy magnesium case, good keyboard, good bright and not glancing screen, and good performance.

Note that is almost certain that BenQ will have a similar looking dual core model very soon (the subnotebook Benq Joybook 6000 is already modernised to Joybook S61 with core duo).

heh...I am surprised anyone would be interested in this 1.5 year old model. Nowadays I would expect anyone to look for newer brands and models instead.

Fyi, I have both the S72 and the K7000. Seeing I have two BenQ's you might think I really liked it. Well, yes and no.

My minimum requirements at the time was a notebook that is less than 2kg, an GPU that can play most 1st person games at medium resolutions, and 14" screen. The S72 does this marvellously. I travelled to India on business trips many times (S72 in my napsack) and play Quake 4 in the hotel. I don't really care much on the battery life as everywhere I go there are power outlets.

There are however things that really annoy me:

    - LCD a little too reflective, especially in a well-lit room. They said it's good for watching DVDs. Not for me. Watching DVDs on a 14" spoils the mood.
    - The remote control does not always work. Junk!
    - The laser pointer is good for annoying other people. But that's about all it's useful for.
    - I couldn't get the remote control and QPresentation to work properly with MS Project
    - The "Fn" key is at the left of the "Ctrl" key. I am used to the Ctrl being at the far left. After 3 years using the S72 and K7000. I still cannot get used to this key placement.
