Hello, I am new to this forum and I need your help:

How many slots are there for RAM in the laptop?

What is the maximum RAM and type I should purchase for each slot?

And, where are instructions for disassembling and reassembling the laptop to install the RAM?

I've developed an extreme and profound degree of patience toward the mind numbing quirkiness that is inherent in my laptop. Jumping cursors! I have just one laptop, Averatec 1020 ed2, which I purchased used. I don't have the money to by another. However, I scream and pull out my hair every time my laptop freezes and that is often since I run a couple of programs at the same time. I need to upgrade my RAM...from the current 512 to at least 1G.

There are 2 slots for RAM. You need to remove the bottom cover in order to acess RAM. It's not difficult to remove the bottom cover, all screws are visible, except two small crews under the combo's door cover, they're only seen when remove the combo's bezel.

The cursor jump around can be fixed by using a free software such as TouchFreeze

Memory type can be found by using this scan

beut, the memory scanner starts with the Averatec 1100 series not the 1000 series. Bummer.

Does anyone know the difference between the ed1 and ed2 of the Averatec 1020 series?

Any other additional information and links/sites would be GREATLY appreciated! I know Averatec 1020 folks are out there!

Your memory should be PC2700, DDR 333Mhz. You should run Memory test to see if your RAM is ok. Search for Windows Memory Diagnosis software from Microsoft by google, it's free.
There is no different between ED1 and ED2 of 1020. However, there is a little differences between 1020 and 1050.

1020 loaded XP Home. 1050 loaded XP Pro.
1020 runs Intel 1GHz CPU. 1050 runs 1.1 GHz CPU.
1020 has Ralink wireless card. 1050 has Intel card.

Actually, a hard drive from 1020 can be used in 1050 or vise versa, you only need to load the correct wireless driver. 1050 and 1020 basically are the same, the differences are CPU and wireless card.

Max Memory 2GB. Your going to have to look for back case removal, but there is a posting on this on the old site on how to take apart a 1000 series. Very detailed. About 15 0r 20 pages. I don't have the reference. but it is there. If you dont find it, there are screws under the three rubber plugs, two tiny ones under DVD/CD drawer. Pull drawer way out and look. this is most important. Be careful taking hinge screws our as the cover may fall. On a separate piece of paper Make a screw diagram and as you take the screws out press them through the paper in their respective locations. That way you wont loose them and You will know where to replace them. There are about 10-15 screws Email me if you have a problem. Removal is not formatable if you take your time.
