I have heard that Athlon 64 is a faster PCU than P4 with longer battery life, not to mention 64bt applications. But when it comes to multitasking which one is better ( this one is really important to me). After all that is what P4 is advertised for (HT). I also heard that Athlon 64 has some heat issues.

BTW Does hypersonic and sager (ax7 and 4750) offer regullar Athlon or XP version?[?]

Please help me decide. I will use it mainly for some Graph. video & sound editing with occasional gaming, DVD's watching...

The P4 runs hotter than the Athlon 64. HT can help or hurt you, either way it increases heat output. I have been unable to overheat my zv5000z (Athlon 64 3200+). See my undervolting thread in the HP forum if you want to really cut back the Athlon 64's heat output.

If you can get the components you want with it, definitely get the Athlon 64.

The AMD64 has better battery life (for Mobile 3200+ this is ~3hrs and for the 3400+ should be 2.5-3hrs). A 3.4GHZ P4 HT will not give you more that 1.5hrs. Plus P4HT systems have the heaviest form factors of all i.e. P4 based laptops are heavir then AMD64 and Dothan. P4HT tends to run very, very hot especially when running under heavy load (read gaming and such) while the AMD 64 is the closest yu can get to a Dothan-cool environment.
As for performance, AMD64 guaranties you a happy 64-bit future but even now it is a faster and more efficient CPU. As for multitasking, this is probably the only department where the P4 equals (or some say is very slightly better than AMD 64) but the real speed and power of an AMD64 is yet to be seen for the CPU is limited by the current 32-bit applications.
But even for the current moment I wouldn't think twice and get an AMD64. Plus, if you are into OCing it is a great toy to have.

Agreed, except batt life, 1.5hours, yea maybe if your playing games... my zx5000 with a p4 3.0ht gets 2.5 during 3DS MAX sessions.

By the time 64bit applications become mainstream no doubt these processors will be out of date anyways. Multitasking is not the only department where the p4 comes out on top. Check this article:

    http://www17.tomshardware.com/cpu/20040106/athlon64_3400-33.html

The only time the P4 is outdone by the A64 is when the A64 is overclocked, and thats a A64 3400+ vs a P4 3.20 (which isnt even overclocked)

Sure its a hot battery sucking little thing but when it comes to pure power at this time the P4 IMO wins.

yes pentium will run the battery out, but who cares if you have an extra modular battery and centrino. Even if not, i'd still go with intel. HT is all you have to say, and plus, you can even get extreme edition on laptops, compare to no Athlon 64 FX-53 on notebooks. BUT FOR YOUR USE, i'd suggest a 3.0 or 2.8 GHz HT P4 OR a 1.6 or 1.7 GHz Centrino. Dont go with amd...

toms hardware is so biased it's not funny i mean they got intel ads all over the place, look at another site w/ benchmarks (anandtech.com) or any other place like that, the only place the p4 beats out the amd64 is in multimedia tasks.

after reading thier review on the amd64 and having it not remotely come close to match any other review on that processor, decided that its no longer a reliable place to get a review from ...too bad

    I agree with Ogi,
Toms Hardware really screwed up that review of the a64. I would check this article on the Dothan from Anandtech to get a better idea of the comparison between the A64 and P4:
    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2129&p=7

I think from the above results you can see that an a64 3200+ or above would stomp on the P4 3.2 (perhaps even in intel-favoring sysmark 04')in everything but DIVX encoding and 3D rendering.

If you can afford a 2.0ghz Dothan, I would go with that. If not, get an Athlon 64.

As far as the heat issue goes, you might want to read a couple of the posts about people damaging table surfaces they had their P4 notebook on, because they didn't have a cooling pad or other protective barrier underneath it.

    Cheers,

I am also deciding between a P4 3.2+ or an AMD 64 2.0+.. I would much rather have the AMD, but I haven't found a manufacturer that puts a 128MB dedicated video card into the 64. If the best I can find is a 64MB, then I'll probably have to go with the P4. Anyone know of any reputable online distributors that have an AMD 64 notebook with 128 MB dedicated video?
