    6110 or 6240?

I was attracted to Averatec because of the price for the DVD-burning AV6110 with its 80 GB hardrive. But I don't know much about the Sempron processor.

I now have a 6110 on order at a local CompUSA. I ordered it during a sale where the after-rebate cost is a cool $749.99.

But the 6240 at Circuit City is very attractive with its Mobile Athlon 64 processor and its "watch-3-DVDs-Without-Turning-Computer-On" feature.

Should I cancel my 6110 and spend the extra bucks for the 6240 (between $250 on sale to $400 regular)?

    Help me here. Thanks

I'm surprised, confused and disappointed that this question has gotten 15 views since I posted it, but not a single comment.

Is this because readers don't see any difference because of the price difference? No "you-get-what-you-pay-for" or "that-Sempron-deal-is-too-hot-to-pass-up" words of wisdom from anyone here who knows of reasons to guide me to one or the order?

I'm not rich and I want to spend my money wisely. This will be my first laptop and hopefully the only one I will need for years to come.

What if I reword my question: Should I consider another brand over Averatec?

Most Averatecs run on AMD or Pentium CPUs, both which run quite hot. They have more fans, which makes them noisy. A Pentium M based machine will offer you the best performance/battery life ratio. I know some Averatecs can be hard to upgrade. Like you have to take the case off which will likely void the warranty. I personally have only seen one Averatec, a 3000 series. It looked OK, nothing great. It did run hot with an AMD CPU. I'd take a look at this:

The 1681 has the glossy screen, if you like that. I would be carefull about buying on the internet. A lot of internet retailers will not take back notebooks. You'd better make sure it is what you want before buying. Read the return policy carefully. You can probably find a better notebook if you look around. Check put the deals section on the homepage. FatWallet and SlickDeals are also a couple good sites for notebook deals. Good Luck.

I suppose your choice really depends on what your needs are. Do you need to have a DVD player you can use without booting the comp? Are you willing to wait for some things to work on the 64bit systems (i.e. games)? It's kind of hard to effectively answer your question without knowing more about what you plan on doing with any laptop you decide on.

And to answer the comment about not being able to upgrade, thats NOT completly true. You can add RAM...thats not an issue. But you cannot upgrade the proc, HD or video card without risk of voiding the warrenty. But that not entirely unheard of.

As for "ya get what ya pay for" or "is Averatec a decent company" for youe entry into the laptop world, i'd have to answer YES to both. Let me explain.
Averatec was my first lappy, due to quality of components (ati 9600 video card, 3.0 gig intel proc, DVD burner and 15.4 monitor) for the price. I use mine daily for school and work and it hasn't let me down in 6+ months of constant use. BUT, not everybody has had that experience. Of course, you'll find that with any device manufacture. My own wish is that the case were not all plastic, it tends to give it a bit of a cheeper feel. Although i've seen name brands with metal cases have their own issues.

So, I suppose my bottom line is that not only am I happily supprised at what I own, I have recommended it to classmates and coworkers, and would likely purchase another in the future....granted, in hopes that they make them a bit stronger.

I personally can't live a slower hard drive, but if you can live with it thats great. If you want a Pentium M with a DVD burner I would look at the Acer 4502. I think Acer offers better build quality than Averatec, in my opinion. Good Luck.
