Wireless Garden StashCard (view larger)Have you ever though to yourself, "I really wish I could store a twenty inside my notebook?" Or maybe you fear for not having a stamp at just the right time. Worry no more; the StashCard from Wireless Garden is here. For $10 you can get one of these nifty storage devices that hangs out in a notebook's PCMCIA slot.
StashCard stashed inside the notebook (view larger)The concept is pretty simple. The metal case opens to reveal a compartment that's roughly 70mm long x 42mm wide and 3mm deep. Put whatever you can fit in the case and slide it into your notebook's PCMCIA slot. The case weighs very little and fit in and out of several slots we tested with.
Of course the compartment is pretty small, so what you can squeeze in is pretty limited. Wireless Garden realizes this and has a little fun with it on the back of the package. They list several items that you can store, like memory cards, money, stamps, extra keys and such. The list goes on to include spare tires, books and first aid kits. We didn't test the spare tire; we suspect that's a joke.
A $20, quarter, memory card and paper clip (view larger)We had plenty of space left over after loading our test unit up with a twenty dollar bill, memory card, quarter and paper clip. Be smart about what you put in there though. There's a warning about storing liquids and items that can melt, but if you need to be warned about something like that, you probably shouldn't have a notebook in the first place.
Pros:
- Enough room to fit a few emergency items
- Takes space you're probably not using anyway
Cons:
- Won't fit a spare tire
Bottom Line:
The StashCard is a fun storage device that I'd be willing to bet no one in your office or circle of friends has. The card works well and is priced right; pick one up to be ready for any emergency or to just increase your geek factor.Purchase Info:
The StashCard is available for $9.95 from the Wireless Garden website.

Gah,
I wish this had been posted a month ago. This is geek-cool and I know a couple of people that would have liked Santa to have dropped this off to them. -
I wouldn't recommend putting money in it. If someone steals your laptop they also make off with your twenty.

Nice review Brian.
It's an interesting creation. I never would have thought about storing money in the PCMCIA slot. I think I'll order one since i'm always needing money
if someone stole my laptop, I seriously doubt that I would even think about the twenty since I would be freaking out about my baby being stolen.

LOL - yeah, forget the twenty, my $2,000 notebook just took a walk!

Speaking of spare tire...
Doesn't seem like it'll fit a canadian bill in it. -

Guys one quick question...
I see this PCMIA weird thingy and it makes me think. Cant people just make a cooler as big as a PCMIA slot? Maybe you can blow air in it or suck air out which makes your pc less hot and faster?
Please if somebody knows this reply

I thought of the same thing with a modular bay cooler but it's pointless cause those compartments are not linked directly to the internals of the laptop. There isn't airflow between those compartments and the internals.

I am holding out for this: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000210072509/

Wow! That thing's pretty nifty, and quite useful. Although, I think my bills would be set afire by the heat in my PCMIA slot!
