An Apple quote (showing an incredible amt. of arrogance IMO)

So has this iPad press conference started yet? Any good specs? I wonder how people expected this thing to be called iSlate when the tradition has been iPod and iPhone. At least guess iPlate, come on, this is i-pple...

According to the cnet live blog, it weighs 1.5lb and has a 1GHz custom processor called the A4, a 9.7" display and 16-64GB of storage. Also, 10 hours of battery life. Basically, think of a much larger iPhone (particularly since the operating systems are very similar if not identical).

Yeah, I saw that in the iLounge link. Thanks for posting.

I think this thing definitely could give all the e-readers out there a run for their money. I am not sure how many people will pick this over iPhone smart phone, but against regular Wintel/Winamd netbooks it does have its advantage (and limitations, too). Now we just have to wait till the actual review to see how the battery life and performance hold up.

No way. Its such a dissapointment. Its a BIG and uncomfortable iPhone with all its limitations, no flash, no multi-tasking, did I mention uncomfortable. Do you imagine yourself writing and E-mail with that thing, holding it with one hand and with the other you are typing = slow.
How does this thing do ANYTHING better than a way cheaper -I can imagine- netbook.

don't worry, you'll be able to buy a stand, and a keyboard and a mouse to go with it. they wouldn't cripple something without ways to pay for functionality.

From everything I'm seeing so far......Apple has pretty much thumbed their noses at the idea of netbooks by introducing a super-sized iTouch centered around the new "ibook" concept. Aside from the traditional uses (music, movies, now reading), it seems to have a steep learning curve (mobile version of iwork strikes me as a bit gimmicky....) and steep pricing ($499/$599/$699 for 16/32/64GB--is steep IMO when you take total functionality into consideration).

Why not call it the "iToy" instead?

I'm just not seeing the usefulness of an oversized iphone? I mean I know there was a "need" for this device but what is it? Maybe for those of us who are anorexic and anemic with more time than we know what to do with? Doesn't seem like a good device for much of anything. If you're going to carry it arround you might as well have an iphone or a laptop. If you wont carry it around you might as well just use your notebook or desktop or perhaps just buy a paperback copy of the book? I still do not see the usefulness of a kindle if its any consolation. It seems to be the worst of all worlds...no worries it will be successful im sure.

LOL @ the fecal waves spewing out of Mansfield's mouth about the "new category"

Honestly.. I think they got self-pwned. Looking at this pic and remembering on what they said at the start of the keynote is humilliating for Apple. They mention that they wanted to create something that did what netbooks do, but better. I see where they are going.. to make it really funcional you need to make it like a computer.

"11:32 AM: Apple has always tried to be at the intersection of technology and liberal arts, Jobs says. Technologically powerful but easy to use and fun to use, fitting the users so users don't have to come to them - they come to the user. So hands on area next door."

Its the technology's variant of a book with cardboard pages?

The only problem is that it isnt even good for reading. Imagine reading 400 pages of a book with a back-lit screen, not very relaxing I guess.

So, this is a larger MID without a full OS, flash support, and is limited by 64gb of space(some MID and MID like devices can be had with 128gb ssd last I heard). I really don't know who this is really for?

You're not missing anything. This thing can't even have more than one application open at once, which is pretty fail.

I dunno why some would not just get an Atom based Tablet/UMPC device(with the gma950 gpu) and put OSX on it. At least there you can run a real os, with multi-task ability, and have Adobe flash support. Not to mention you will also get a larger HDD(or SSD on some models) and even a SD card slot that Apple like to shun, because they can't profit of you that way. Why buy the new 128gb model in that fancy new color, when your current 64gb model can be expanded with those new 64gb sd card from Samsung or Sandisk.

Haha, it's basically a Compaq TC1000, except less powerful, without a full featured operating system, and doesn't have a stylus. I guess it's a little thinner than the TC1000 if you took its keyboard off, but not much.

Congrats Apple, you tried to copy a 7 year old product and did a poor job of it.

And I was just making a joke. ;) But if Apple were to do something like that, it's very conceivable. They could have simply made a true tablet computer, or iNetbook, but they chose to make a glorified iphone instead.

this device is definitely not for me, I am pretty underwhelmed. I can see the market for it though.... I think it will sell well.

The one great thing about it..... is the potential for the 4th gen iphone. Give me a smaller version of this with the same processor, and nice unibody aluminum enclosure and it will be the best phone ever. Just please apple... ditch the glossy plastic.

    p.s.
My first reaction when I saw the name "iPad" was that it was a tampon from the future....
