I would add that the potential USB 3.0 performance is much faster than that measured, which is constrained by the speed at which the data can be written to / read from the platters. Nonethless more than doubling the maximum throughput of USB 2.0 is very welcome. For those wanting even shorter backup times then, in my experience, the 3 platter Seagate / Samsung Slim 2TB drive runs a bit faster.

The optimum cable length is highly subjective. I would consider 18" to be plenty and would be happy with 12" to reduce cable clutter and increase portability. This is a notebook-related website so a USB port should nevr be far away.

    Who's TG?

I picked up the thicker 2TB WD My Passport back in December. It's been a solid performer, other than having to install a special driver from WD's website to get the best performance. The Ultra seems to have a three year warranty while mine is only two. My next upgrade will be the Seagate 4TB portable, though it is a bit chunky too.
