The Western Digital "My Passport" series of external hard drives is perhaps the most successful line of portable external hard drives today. The new My Passport Essential raises the bar again with USB 3.0, large storage capacities and a reasonable price.

Horrible. Stopped working in less than a year. 9 months max even in a controlled no traveling enviroment. Lost over 10,000 photos. I am a photographer. Really depressing.. even more so we the reply by the company, "We are not responsible for loss of data.. its a back up drive so you should have the info stored in another place as well." Well in that case, where do you buy the reliable "back-up the back-up drive drives" Thats what i would like. I couldn't imagine starting a business and not placing a guarantee on my work. Actually i do.. and now i can't access my drive for additional prints.

DO NOT BUY FROM WESTERN DIGITAL.

WOW Roman Guy, that really sucks! I've had pretty good luck with mine but I use it primarily to backup my data so it doesn't take much wear and tear.

I also have had excellent luck with my usb 2 1 tb drive ... working for a long time and lots of use as well.

I guess there will always be lemons in any mass releases though....
